HARDWARE
Figure 1 shows the hardware block diagram of the relay. The relay has a multiple microprocessor design. The microprocessors perform the software functions such as signal processing, protection algorithm, scheme logic, output relay control and handling of the human interface. Analog inputs include phase current inputs, residual current inputs and phase voltage inputs. The number of analog inputs depends on the type of the relay. The internal auxiliary transformers are used to isolate, step down and condition the inputs from the VT and CTs. Their output signals are then converted into digital data for further processing. The front panel contains a liquid crystal display (LCD) and pushbutton keys to provide local access to the relay menu. There are also light emitting diodes (LED) for visual indication of the status of the relay. The relay provides three communication ports, RS232C for connection of a local PC, RS485 for a remote PC and IRIG-B for an external clock.

METERING AND RECORDING Metering and Monitoring

The following power system data is an example of what is measured continuously and displayed on the LCD, on the relay fascia, at the local PC, and the remote PC when connected. - Voltages (phase, phase to phase, symmetrical components) - Currents (phase, phase to phase, symmetrical components) - Active power and reactive power - Frequency Currents and voltages can be indicated in LCD or local/remote PC as primary or secondary values. Active power and reactive power are indicated as primary values. It depends on the type of the relay which power system data could be measured and displayed. The user can monitor the following output and status indications on the LCD and at local/remote PCs. - Relay element output - Binary input/output

Event Record
Time-tagged events are stored with 1ms resolution. Events recorded are as follows. - Tripping operations - Alarms - Change of state of binary inputs/outputs - Change of relay setting - Failure detected by automatic supervision - Other events defined by user

Local PC

Fig.1 Hardware block diagram The terminal blocks are located at the rear of the relay providing connections for all input and output circuits.

A relay trip initiates fault recording. Records are stored for the 8 most recent faults, time-tagged to 1ms resolution. The fault record is available on the relay fascia LCD and at a local or remote PC. Fault records include the following data: Date and time of trip operation. Operating phase. Protection scheme responsible for trip. Measured current data.

Disturbance Record
The relay can record analog and binary signals initiated by relay tripping. The post-trigger recording time can be set, and the maximum number of records which can be stored is dependent on the recording time chosen.

Calendar and Time

The relay provides a date and time for tagging of records.

GR-Series
USER INTERFACE Relay Front Panel
A user friendly interface is provided on the relay front panel. A menu-based system provides for easy programming of relay functions and access to real-time and stored data. The front panel includes LCD with backlight, LEDs, operation keys and RS232C port for a local PC.

Local PC Connection
The user can communicate with the GR-relay from a local PC via the RS232C port on the front panel. Using RSM100 software, the user can view and modify settings, monitor real-time metering and analyse recorded data.

Remote Setting and Monitoring (RSM)

GR-relays can be connected to the RSM system via the rear mounted serial communications port, using either RS485 or fibre optic connections (specified at time of order). Using RSM100 software, the user can view and modify settings, monitor real-time metering and analyse recorded data. A maximum of 832 relays can be connected to the remote PC in multi-drop mode, through a protocol converter, with a maximum data transmission rate of 64kbps. GR-relays are compliant with the IEC60870-5-103 transmission protocol. The figures below show the configuration of the RSM system and typical displays from the RSM100 software.

IEC61850 Communication
Some of the relay types can support data communication according to the IEC 61850 standard. Station bus communication as specified in IEC 61850-8-1 facilitates integration of the relays within substation control and automation systems via Ethernet LAN, either 100BASE-TX or 100BASE-FX.

Relay Setting
The user can input or change settings using the operation keys on the relay fascia or via a local or remote PC with the RSM system. Password protection is provided to change settings. Four to eight active setting groups are provided. The number of setting groups depends on the relay type.

Binary Inputs
GR-relays provide programmable binary inputs. The number of inputs varies according to the relay type.

PLC Function
Some GR-relays are provided with a PLC (Programmable Logic Control) function allowing user-configurable sequence logics on binary signals. Configurable binary inputs, binary outputs and LEDs are programmed by the PLC function.
9

Configurable Binary Output Contacts

GR-relays provide programmable binary output contacts. The number of outputs varies according to the relay type.
