Affordable Rental Housing for City Workers

An exciting new project from the City of Perth will provide affordable rental housing within two kilometres of the CBD for city-based workers. The Key City Worker Development is a 48-unit, three storey walk-up apartment complex in East Perth. These brand new one and two bedroom apartments will be rented at below-market rates to city-based workers on modest incomes from mid-2013. The program will enable workers in key industries such as retail, community services, hospitality, tourism and administration to live close to their workplaces in the city while reducing their cost of living and rent expenses. To be eligible, people must meet the eligibility requirements which include: Having a job within the City of Perth Not exceeding cash asset limits Not being an owner or part owner of any other property Not earning more than the household income limits which are $45,496 for a single person and $62,943 for a couple.

Tenants will pay 80% of market rent, with prices based on the market rental value of each property. Efficient water and energy design will also help to reduce water, power and gas bills and residents will save money on transport, as they can walk, cycle or catch free public transport to their workplace in the city. Six of the units have been designed to the Adaptable Housing standard, providing opportunity for workers with disabilities to benefit from the scheme. The maximum length of tenancy is three years, after which time residents will need to move out and find housing in the private market. Registration and applications are now open for eligible tenants and the apartments are expected to finish construction in April 2013. For more information on this project and to see if you qualify please visit the City of Perth Website www.cityofperth.wa.gov.au/keyworkerdevelopment

The benefits of SkillSelect SkillSelect is a major change to how Australia manages its skilled migration program. SkillSelect helps to ensure the skilled migration program is based on the economic needs of Australia. It will support the Australian Government in managing who can apply for skilled migration, when they can apply and in what numbers. As a result, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship expects to significantly reduce the time taken to process a visa application. SkillSelect will also help address regional skill shortages. SkillSelect allows intending migrants to indicate if they are willing to live and work in regional Australia. This will be of particular benefit to employers experiencing regional skill shortages and state and territory governments attempting to settle migrants in regional Australia. How SkillSelect works SkillSelect is an online service that enables skilled workers and business people interested in migrating to Australia to record their details to be considered for a skilled visa through an Expression of Interest (EOI). Intending migrants can then be found and nominated for skilled visas by Australian employers or state and territory governments, or they may be invited by the Australian Government to lodge a visa application. From 1 July 2012, all intending migrants interested in the points based skilled migration or business investment and innovation visa programs are required to submit an EOI and receive an invitation in order to lodge a visa application. For more details see http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/

The objective of this program is to facilitate high level Pakistani professionals abroad for their placement in Pakistan through short to long terms technical assistance to avail benefits of their expertise for specific inputs in their areas of specialization, for public and private sector within the country. As most of the Pakistani migrants in Australia are skilled migrants, this is a perfect opportunity to support Pakistan. Please take time to register at www.ppqp.gov.pk
