Hardiman Research Scholarships

Named in honour of James Hardiman, the first Librarian of Queens College Galway (now NUI Galway), this new four-year scholarship programme aims to produce highly focused PhD graduates, from a pool of national and international candidates.

NUI Galways Research Strengths

The Hardiman Research scholarship scheme is open to students applying for a PhD in one of NUI Galways five priority areas of research:

Cancer-Care-West Hardiman Scholarships

The Cancer-Care-West Hardiman Scholarships have been established with the generous support of Cancer Care West and the Galway University Foundation. The scholarships will support translational and clinical research in the areas of Cancer Biology, Therapeutics, and Psycho-oncology at NUI Galway and the associated University Hospital Galway (UHG). Scholarships will be awarded competitively to the highest calibre graduate students in the areas of: Surgical Oncology; Medical Oncology; Radiation Oncology; Psycho-Oncology; and Haematological Oncology

Biomedical Science and Engineering

Galway is one of four global hubs for the Medical Technologies industry and NUI Galway is Irelands leading university for Biomedical Science and Engineering research. The National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES) is the Universitys flagship Biomedical Science and Engineering research institute. Our programmes combine fundamental and applied research with clinical translation, education and technology transfer. The major research clusters include: Regenerative Medicine and Developmental Biology; Cancer Biology and Therapeutics; Infection, Inflammation and Immunity; Neurosciences; Clinical and Health Sciences; and Biomedical Engineering.

Informatics, Physical, and Computational Sciences

The objective of this priority research area is to support research in mathematics, core physical sciences, and Information Technology leading to new technologies and contributing to the knowledge-based economy in Ireland. Our research addresses the problems presented by vast data sets flowing from activities in e.g., Biology, Chemistry, and Astronomy that need significant computing power to reduce, analyse and visualise. Further, we research modelling and simulation, which are integral to almost all physical and biological sciences. Our major research clusters include: Applied Computing and Semantic Web; Applied Photonics and Medical Physics; Astronomy; Mathematics; and Modelling, Simulation, Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) is the worlds largest institute for semantic web research and is a Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Excellence in Science and Technology.

Selection of Scholarship winners

Students applying for this programme will nominate the supervisors with whom they wish to work and will be assessed by an independent panel which will ensure that the best research experience for the student is received.

Creativity and Enterprise

Additional Modules on Creativity and Enterprise will be offered in the course of these structured PhD programmes to ensure interaction between the graduate students and encourage peer support, enabling graduates to complete the programme on time and to a high level of satisfaction, supporting their research and personal development.

Environment, Marine, and Energy

This priority research area focuses on some of the pressing issues of the 21st Century and our location, near the North Atlantic Ocean, is a strong driver of the research priorities. The Ryan Institute is NUI Galways hub for Environmental, Marine and Energy research. Research themes include: climate change, built environment and sustainability, marine and coastal processes, energy-efficient technologies and bio-energy, renewable energy resources, biodiversity and bioresources, and sustaining health via environmental stewardship. The Ryan Institute is involved in a wide variety of inter-disciplinary research projects and collaborates extensively with national and international partners.
