Failure of democracy in Pakistan Every time there is a change of government in Pakistan, dictator is found sitting on top as the head

of the state. In whatever form the change may come, it matters little. It may be an elected government thrown up by a proper democratic process or a government installed in place of a dismissed one. The question is why democracy fails to come to Pakistan? Reasons Democracy did not take roots in Pakistan due to a number of reasons. Illiteracy is a major root cause behind the failure of democracy in Pakistan. Literacy is the very first and the most important requisite for democracy. Maximum part of our population is still suffering in the vicious cycle of illiteracy and they are unable to contribute anything towards the development of Pakistan. Illiteracy also leads to poverty. An illiterate and economically impoverished community has only concern with bread. One thing the very foundation of democracy-political education to the people-remain week due to mass illiteracy and extremely low standard of education. Thirdly hardly any one of the national political leaders is or ever was from among the people. They are elites. Another reason for democracy not taking roots in Pakistan is the absence of democratic political process; basically, it is the result of non existence of democracy within political parties that have been in power. Political leader didnt have political education themselves. Economic condition is also a reason of failure of democracy.

Factor that transform democracy into dictatorship It is not only the military man who becomes a dictator when in power; the civilian too is no exception to the phenomenon. Obviously, it is due to the feudalistic structure of the Pakistani society. The national mosaic in composed of sardars in balochistan, khan in NWFP, waderas in sindh and landlords/jagirdars in the Punjab. They all hold absolute economic, political and social hold on their tribes.

Recommendations Some recommendations which are essential to make democracy a successful in Pakistan 1. Sweatshops of feudalism should be closed and traditions of inherited politics must be abolished. 2. Education and social liberty should be given to the all nation in general and to the rural community in particular. 3. There should be social equality, justice and rule of law across the country. Irrespective of their social status and level of wealth, all the citizens should be considered equally accountable of their deeds. 4. Youth must be promoted and young, energetic and educated people should be encouraged in every sphere of life. Conclusion When our nation will be literate and social freedom will be there, then genuine and competent leadership will emerge from bottom of our society and it will focus on the social welfare and security of general public and sovereignty of our land. A successful execution of all these pragmatic measures may be able to lead towards a strong democratic Pakistan in true sense and this task is not insurmountable. Otherwise game of Chess between politicians and Military will continue as it was in the past.
