Preparing for winter is important to protect your most valuable asset
3) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts Inspect your attic to make sure you have proper insulation. Proper insulation prevents warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. Replace broken roof shingles or tiles. Clean out your gutters. Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.
Its that time of year where we need to prepare ourselves for the upcoming winter. Here is a list of items to consider: 1) Outdoors Drain the gas from your lawnmower Tune up your snow blower and/or locate your snow shovel Store bags of salt or sand to melt the ice. Make sure water valve to your outside tap is closed to prevent pipe from bursting when water freezes. Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. Seal driveways, patios and decks. Move potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area.
4) Heating Systems Have your heating system checked by a professional. Stock up on furnace filters and change them monthly. If your home is heated by a hot-water radiator, bleed the valves by opening them slightly and when water appears, close them. Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace.
5) Safety Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. Vehicle readiness. Make sure you vehicle is ready for winter driving. Its time to check your tires, put on your winter tires, replace your windshield wipers, windshield wiper fluid, and antifreeze levels.
2) Reduce Drafts and Leaks Check windows, doors and all exterior trim. If you find a draft, caulk around the problem area. If your home has a basement, consider protecting its window wells by covering them with plastic shields.
