Total 50 Marks

The assignment counts 10% of your final mark Question 1 (5 marks)

A rectangular plate shown in vertical section AB, is 5m high and 6m wide(normal to the plate of the paper) and blocks the end of a fresh water channel 3m deep. The plate is hinged about a horizontal axis along its upper edge through A and is restrained from opening by fixed ridge B which bears horizontally against the lower edge of the plate. Find the force B exerted on the plate by the ridge.

A TV camera following a Rugby World Club match is transported along the sideline of the pitch on a motorised cart. During a period of play, the position of the camera is given by S = 0.6 t3 -9 t2 + 29 t + 50 where S is measured in meters along the sideline for a time interval of 0-10 seconds. A) Determine a function for the velocity and acceleration of the TV camera. B) Use Matlab to plot the displacement, velocity and acceleration of the camera for the first 10 seconds and attach plots to your assignment submitted. C) Determine the maximum and minimum position values of the camera and the minimum velocity (Negative velocity ) in the first 10 seconds, using derivatives. (Hint:you can use functions like roots, polyval to solve these in Matlab) D) At what time (0 -10sec) was the camera on the 50m mark. E) At what time was the velocity zero

Question 3

(a) The design model of a new ship has a mass of 20 kg and is tested in an experimental towing tank to determine its resistance through the water at various speeds. The test results are plotted on the accompanying graph, and the resistance R may be closely approximated by the dashed parabolic curve shown. If the model is released when it has a speed of 2m/s, determine the time t required for it to reduce its speed to 0.2 m/s and the corresponding travel distance x.

Question 4
Use the principle of Energy Conservation to calculate the force required to accelerate a body of mass 500 kg from 10m/s to 40 m/s over 250m up a gradient of 1 in 50, if the traction resistance remains constant at 100 N. (7 Marks)

Question 5

Passengers in a transport airplane A flying due east at a speed of 600km/h observe a second airplane B that passes under A in horizontal flight. Although the nose of plane B is pointed in the 400 northeast direction, air plane B appears to the passengers in A to be moving away from the transport in the 600 northwest direction. Determine the true velocity of airplane B. (4 marks)

. The cyclist applies the brakes as he descends the 10 Degree incline. There is no slip between the surface of the tire and the road. The combined centre of mass of the rider and bicycle at point G is 900 mm above the ground surface. Take the acceleration due to gravity is equal to 9.81 m/s2. a) Calculate what value of deceleration would cause the dangerous condition of tipping about the front wheel A. (4 Marks) b) Assume the cyclist decelerates at a constant rate of 2m/s2 and the combined weight of rider and bicycle is 100 kg. Calculate the normal forces under each of the wheels. (6 Marks)
