Huitn Needs Help

Description of Huitn, Guatemala Huitn is located at a distance of 35 kilometers from the provincial capital of Quetzaltenango. North of the municipality is the town of Cabricn, to the east is the town of White River in the department of San Marcos, to the west is the municipality of Sibilia and to the south Palestina of Los Altos. People here speak Maya Mam and subsist on agriculture, living in extreme poverty and with high levels of child malnutrition. Others migrate to the south coast to support themselves through daily work that consists of cutting sesame, corn tapisca, and other crops. Not having the resources to cover their basic food, there is also a high rate of unemployment and underemployment.

Earthquake Impact The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that took place November 7, 2012 destroyed approximately 100 homes in Huitn; with 15 houses destroyed completely. The most affected families are now homeless, without clothes, without food, without cookware and little to no income. We also experienced the death of one seven year old girl, who was killed by a falling wall. More specifically, the earthquake impacted 100 families, about 1,000 people and the entire community has felt its ripple effect. Of a total of about 20 families, 200 people are from families that now do not have

anywhere to spend the night and 80 families homes are uninhabitable and unsafe to occupy. Many people in the community have provided rooms in their homes to temporarily house these families. But the families whose houses were destroyed completely, buried under mounds of dirt or collapsed into ravines are suffering during a period of great cold in this high altitude area of rural Guatemala. The homes that were not completely destroyed became uninhabitable after cracks opened up in the foundation threatening the collapse of these homes to about 80 families. Since they did not have enough food to survive, they are preparing food without cookware because it was buried under the rubble. Many do not have blankets to cover themselves at night from the cold; many have spent nights in pens with the sheep, they cannot leave their land because most have some animals like dogs, pigs, sheep, cows, chickens. The people most affected are the ones living in extreme poverty.

Needs The needs, as of right now, include clothing, warm blankets, cooking utensils and food. Our short term needs are of food, clothing, blankets, cooking utensils and a small place to spend the night; long term we need formal living arrangements, productive projects, workshops on nutrition, capital to start up businesses like handicrafts, production projects, activities that generate employment. Long term they need permanent homes. We propose a small ranch in the meantime while appropriate housing is being built.

Proposed Project to Help Those Impacted As there are no hotels or hostels in Huitn, we propose the building of a temporary village. In order to be able to build this village we we will need building materials, food and gardening and other materials to create this project from scratch. We have currently started building with whatever is available to us and donated from within the village, but we need to be able to buy more materials. The village we propose to build is 20 houses for 160 people. These huts are built to bases with wood studs, tin roofs and walls of tables that are about a quarter of 6 meters long and 4 meters wide. and will house approximately 1 family, consisting of an average of 8 members, per house for a period of three to five months while more formal permanent houses are built. The people who can help us in the community are the municipality, organized youth groups such as the eco-club, and the COCODES can count on the library for coordination.

Budgets and Funds Needed This budget is for the construction of an emergency temporary village for families affected by the earthquake. Each house measures 6 meters long and 4 meters wide.

Comments: This budget is for 20 families, there are an additional 80 families who lost their homes but who are staying with other community members in a small room. If its possible to include food for 80 families this would increase the amount remaining food to Q60,200.00 ($7,718.00 USD) for 100 families in total and clothing would increase to Q80,000.00 ($10,256.00 USD). I have enclosed a short list of families in the village, but on Monday we will have more information regarding the surrounding villages

in the municipality of Huitn.

Chronology and Schedule Each small ranch will be built within one to two days with 10 people working on it, a total period of all ranches (20) in 5 days with the following stages: Stage 1: Purchase of food, materials and basic needs -- 1 day Stage 2: Distribution of food and materials -- 2 days Stage 3: Construction of ranches -- 5 days

Organization The Huitn community library under Riecken Foundation will be in charge of managing the funds, coordinating the purchase of clothing, materials, food, and other relief support. All this will be justified through legal purchase receipts, photos of purchases and delivery of supplies, comments from the benefited population, with the support of Fundacin Riecken Guatemala and Asociacin HablaGuate.
