Another urn B contains 3 white and 5 black balls. Two balls are taken from urn A randomly and are placed in urn B. Now one ball is taken from urn B. What is the probability that it is a black ball? The mean life of a sample of 100 electric bulbs produced by a company is found to be 1570 hrs. With a S.D. of 120 hrs. A random sample of 10 washers was found to have thickness of 0.024 cm with a S.D. of 0.002 cm. Test the significance of the deviation at 5% level. A fair coin is tossed 5 times. What is the probability of having at least one head? In a team of communication engineers, 80% know probability theory, 75% know information theory and 70% know both probability theory and information theory. Calculate the percentage of engineers who know neither probability theory nor information theory. The probability density function is y = k (3 x 2 1) in 1 x 2 = 0 elsewhere find the value of k and find the probability (1 x 0).

Among the items produced in a factory 5% are defective. Find the probability that a sample of 8 contains. (i) Exactly 2 defective items (ii) Greater than or equal to 7 defective items (iii) At least one defective item Find the value of the finite population correction factor for n = 10 and N = 1000. A sample is collected from the items produced by a factory. The sample size is 81. The standard deviation of the population is 0.3. Find the standard error of the mean of sampling distribution. A random sample of size 100 has a S.D. of 5. What can you say about the maximum error with 95% confidence? The mean and S.D. of a population are 11,795 and 14,054 respectively. What can one assert with 95% confidence about the maximum error x = 11,795 and n = 50. Also construct the 95% confidence interval for the true mean for the above given data.

A manufacturer of electronic equipment subjects samples of two completing brands of transistors to an accelerated performance test. If 45 of 180 transistors of the first kind and 34 of 120 transistors of the second kind fail the test, what can he conclude at the 0.05 level of significance about the difference between the corresponding sample proportions? Two types of new cars produced in U.S.A. are tested for petrol mileage; one sample is consisting of 42 cars averaged 15 kmpl. While the other sample consisting of 80 cars averaged 11.5 kmpl. With population variance as 2 1 = 2.0 and 2 2 = 1.5 respectively. Test whether there is any significant difference in the petrol consumption of these two types of cars? At a certain petrol pump, customers arrive in a Poisson process with an average time of 5 min. between arrivals. Find the following: (i) Average time a customer has to wait in the queue? (ii) By how much time the flow of the customers be increased to justify the opening of another service point, where the customer has to wait for 5 min. for the service?

What is meant by Level of Significance? A die was thrown 9000 times and of these 3220 yielded a 3 or 4. Is this consistent with the hypothesis that the die was unbiased? A sample of 10 cam shafts intended for use in gasoline engine has average eccentricity of 1.02 and a S.D. of 0.044 inch. Assuming the data may be treated a random sample from a normal population, determine a 95% confidence interval for the actual mean eccentricity of the cam shaft? A research worker wants to determine the average time it takes a mechanic to rotate the tires of a car and he wants to be able to assert with 95% confidence that the mean of his sample is off by atmost 0.5 min. A coin was tossed 960 times and returned heads 183 times. Test the hypothesis that the coin is unbiased. Use = 0.05 as Level of significance. According to the norms established for a mechanical aptitude test, persons who are 18 years old have an average height of 73.2 with S.D. of 8.6. If 4 randomly selected persons of that age averaged 76.7, test the hypothesis = 73.2 against the alternative hypothesis > 73.2 at 0.01 level of significance. The heights of 10 males of a given locality are found to be 70, 67, 62, 68, 61, 68, 70, 64, 64, 66inches. Is it reasonable to believe that the average height is greater than 64 inches? Test at 5% level of significance. A sample analysis of examination results of 500 students was made. It was found that 220 students had failed, 170 had secured a third class, 90 were placed in second class and 20 got a first class. Do these figures commensurate with the general examination result which is in the ratio of 4:3:2:1 for the various categories respectively? The rate of arrivals of customers at a telephone booth follows Poisson distribution with an average of 10 min. between two successive arrivals. The duration of a phone call is assumed to follow exponential distribution with a mean time of 3 min. (i) Find the probability that a new arrival has to wait to make the call? (ii) What is the average length of the nonempty queue? (iii) It is proposed to establish one more booth when the customers would expect waiting time for at least 3 min for their turn to make a call. By how much time should the flow of the customers increase in order to justify a second booth? (iv) Estimate the fraction of a day that the phone will be in use? (v) What is the probability that it will take more than 10 min. altogether to wait for the phone and complete his call?
