ERGONOMICS EXCELLENCE

ELECTRICALLY OPERATED HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE DESKS

Using height adjustable desks in the office is a good ergonomics practice. People are able to adjust the height of their desks to suit them without either having to raise the desk on blocks or use a footrest to bring the floor to their feet! They are also able to alternate between seated and standing work positions, which is recommended in the ergonomic standard for VDU workstations (BS EN ISO 9241 Part 5). Electric motors are particularly important for sit stand desking where the desk top will have to be moved up or down by 400 to 700mm. In such situations mechanical cranking would be unsuitable as it would take much too long (user may get fed up and do not bother to change their positions from sit to stand or vice versa) and would require significant physical effort from the user. Electric motors would enable the desks to go up fairly quickly without requiring any real effort from the user. Electric motors would raise the desktops at a constant speed, which is acceptable to the user but not so fast that the equipment can be dislodged. Their motion is smooth and therefore whilst changing the height of the desk electronic equipment, such as PC and screen on desk remain undisturbed. Electric motors used in height adjustable desks are quite, some are almost noiseless, so much so that a person at the other end of the telephone of a desk user who is raising/lowering his/her desk, is unaware of the noise. Because of the ease, smoothness and quietness of the desk operation a call centre operator can raise their desk whilst at the same time remaining fully attentive to the customer. Electrically operated desk tops do not have to be adjusted to suit the varying weights placed on the desk, ie the desk would operate the same way whether I added another screen or a large printer on the desk, unlike the gas strut operated desks. If the weight supported on the desktop of gas strut operated desk is changed significantly, the movement of the desktop will be much quicker depending on how significant the change of the weight carried on the desk is. If the weight carried on the desk is significantly reduced (eg removing 4 of the 8 screens on the desk), once the gas strut lever is operated the desk top will move up rather quickly and unexpectedly; this could hit the users if they were leaning over the desk. Conversely, if the weight carried on the desk is increased significantly (eg adding 4 screens to the desk with 4 screens already on it) once the gas strut lever is operated the desk top will move down rather quickly and unexpectedly; this could hit the users knees if they were sitting down at their desks. The electrical motors which are used in height adjustable desks are generically safe as they use low voltage (24V). Provided that the electric motors comply with the low voltage appliances directive and electricity regulations, there should not be any real safety issues with the electric motors in the height adjustable desks.
