The Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal, a constituent institute of M anipal University, is rated among the top five

private engineering colleges in I ndia. Established in 1957, MIT is one of the first self-financing engineering co lleges in the country. In 2000, the college became a constituent institute of th e deemed university - Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), which is today known as Manipal University. The institute which celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2007 attracts a diverse student community from all over India. MIT i s known for its rich, vibrant campus life marked by technical, cultural and spor ts events running throughout the year. Highlights: 15 Undergraduate and 24 Postgraduate programs Approved by AICTE & accredited by NBA ISO 9001 & 14001 Certified Wi-Fi enabled campus MoU with more than 15 foreign universities Excellent Placement and Industrial Liaison activities Green residential campus with over 7500 students and 500 faculty Innovation Center to foster Ideation/ Innovation & Incubation Active technical and non-technical student clubs Practice School & International Student Exchange Programs B.E Biotechnology Program: B.E. Biotechnology is a field of engineering which incorporates the principles o f Bioprocess Engineering, Biology, Chemistry and Computational analysis. This Bi otechnology Course can be defined as applications of life sciences to manufactur ing, chemical synthesis and design of fermentation processes. Programmes Offered: B.E. in Biotechnology M.Tech. in Biochemical Engineering M.Tech. in Industrial Biotechnology Ph.D. Biotechnology Ph.D. Biochemical Engineering The undergraduate Program in Biotechnology (B.Tech.) in MIT was started in the a cademic year 2005-06. The course objective is to mould students with a technica l base for employment in the diverse areas of Biotechnology, where the industry based arena is expanding rapidly. This course has been designed to provide the students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in biochemical eng ineering, molecular biology, enzymology, bioinformatics etc. to keep pace with l atest developments and to cater to the needs of industrial biotechnology sector. This professional course opens up avenues for its graduates to promote entrepr eneurship as well as careers in biotechnology related industries. B.E Biotechnology department: The B.E Biotechnology department offers a total of eleven laboratories from the 3rd to 7th semester, with 30% weight age to science, 30% to computers and 40% to Bio-processing technology. Students gain hands-on experience in all these three areas, which is unique to the Biotechnology programme at M.I.T., Manipal. In this programme, while constancy on essential areas of biology and engineering curriculum is maintained, considerable flexibility is built in through the elec tives offered in the study. The students are encouraged to select areas that fit his/ her aptitude and interest, so that they are allowed to specialize in the a rea of choice as follows: genetic engineering, process development, computer app lication in bioprocess, design and development of materials and equipments in bi oprocess. Growth Prospects: With its agricultural heritage and high technology industrial base, India provid es a wide range of opportunities for biotech engineers. Biotechnology-based appl ications are poised to leave the research lab and enter commercial applications. The students have a wide range of options to choose from after finishing the co urse. The list shown below is only indicative and not comprehensive. They can c onsider the options of higher studies like M.Tech, MS, etc, specializing in the

field they wish to. Design and operation of fermentation systems Development of novel food processing operations Development of upstream and downstream strategies Design of new approaches to monitor and control biological processes Design of alternative bioprocesses to the existing chemical processes Design of the biological waste water treatment systems for chemical and bioproce ss industries Development of bioinformatics tools for novel applications Production of cost effective bio-fuels Research activity: Projects carried out: Hydrolysis of rice bran oil using immobilized lipase from Candida rugosa (comple ted) Ongoing projects: Studies on Color removal from waste water Mathematical Modeling and Control Design of a Bioreactor for Fermentation proces s Remediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils through Indigenous Microbial Biosu rfactants Aqueous two phase systems for the recovery of Biomolecular from tannery waste wa ter Production and purification of fabrinolytic enzymes Production and purification of thermostable glucoamylase Production and purification of Astaxanthin
