Presidents Letter
The 2012-2013 school year has been off to an amazing start. I am so impressed with the participation for PTA this year. Our Executive Board and Committee Chairs started working well before school started to ensure we were ready for school and they succeeded in every way. We were ready to welcome our Staff back to school with a welcome lunch, organized by Mary Prendergast. Fire House Subs catered the lunch and we had wonderful door prizes donated for our faculty. PTA has its own website, GNMSPTA.com designed and maintained by Nancy Ermini. You can access it directly or by going through the GNMS homepage. The PTA page has all the information you need about PTA including the calendar, forms and Spiritwear information. PTA membership is currently just over 80% (the highest it has been in years) and there is still time to join. Beth Rozier has done an excellent job coordinating this effort. Our student directory, under the guidance of Michelle Brunn, was compiled and distributed before the end of October, quite an accomplishment. Most adjusted dismissal days, the PTA will host Pizza Lunch sales. This herculean effort is chaired by Cindie Gianascoli who orders all of the pizza and soda for our 1100 students. To see our entire student body through the pizza line in a limited amount of time is truly a team effort. We can always use more hands on the line. This season was the first time in four years that football concessions would be held at Great Neck and out chair Kristin Lineberry was up for the unknown. With little history for concessions, she did a great job estimating what we needed for each game, and brought in great food including Dominoes pizza and Chik-fil-A sandwiches. Our Spirit Nights chair, Diana Trimble has all of Spirit events planned for the year, including some new events at Five Below and Hwy 55 (see he calendar for more information). Reflections, chaired by Karen Kier and Terri Darnell, has seen more participation than ever before, 166 entries. They are assisted by Jen Lynch, in organizing all these wonderful works of art for judging and awards presentation. Keep the Box Tops, Farm Fresh Receipts and Campbell Soup labels coming. We have exceeded our first quarter goal and Terri Piston, our chair, hopes the trend will continue. The PTA is also hard at work behind the scenes, helping teachers with copying tasks so they can spend more time on instruction and planning. Thanks to Sandi Dittig who heads this effort. As we head into the second quarter, lets continue our enthusiasm for Great Neck, our students, staff and administration. Together we can guarantee that GNMS will remain the best middle school in Hampton Roads. Thanks for all you do! Christine Wilson GNMS PTA President

Volunteers Making a Difference

Although many parents think that their volunteer days are over when their children leave elementary school, that could not be further from the truth. While you might not always see our volunteers in the halls, we have volunteers helping with all sorts of projects. Thanks to the following parents for going above and beyond: Mandy McCall, Connie Flaherty, Hilda Guzman, Stacey Pilla, Jerry Tabor, Dana McKee, Cindy Becker, and Joanne Fillion. If you would like to volunteer, please contact VIE chair, Cindie Giananscoli, dgianascoli@cox.net.

Principals Corner: November 2012

As we move toward completion of the first quarter of the school year and I reflect on the first two months of our academic year, I am invariably drawn to the myriad signs of continuous growth and accomplishment from our school and its community. We have just completed our first season on our new athletic fields, and inside and outside of the classroom, staff, parents, and students are making Great Neck Middle a better place. I continue to be impressed by our improvement in student conduct. A comparison of data for the first quarter of this year to last year shows a 26% decrease in the number of disciplinary incidents at GNMS, and our students attendance continues to improve as well. Nothing replaces the value of direct instruction, and our data clearly illustrates that students who are in school on a regular basis achieve higher than those with absences. May I also request you take a moment to discuss the cell phone policy again with your child? I have seen too many outstanding student whose cell phones activated resulting in phone confiscation and ISS, the minimum consequence. When students turn off cells and place them in the locker, such consequences are unlikely to occur. For your planning purposes, to assist families with holiday travel, Wednesday November 21, 2012, students at the middle school will be released at 1:10 PM. Please know that Great Neck Middle offers academic assistance for students who are experiencing academic difficulty. Each morning, the Homework Center opens at 7:30 AM and a math teacher is available to provide homework assistance. In addition, our teachers are available for extra assistance either before or after school, and students who remain at school for extra assistance may ride the activity bus home. We also offer SOL tutoring during each week day, M-TH, from 7:45-8:45 AM, and students who score below a 69 on a core course of math, science, social studies, or English are assigned to an Academic Support bell in lieu of an elective during the school day. Contact your childs counselor for additional information. Regular communication with your childs teachers is important. You may contact your childs teachers through voice mail, through email, or through the guidance office. You will find a link to our teachers on our website www.greatneckms.vbschools.com. Most importantly, ensure you are using Parent Portal to access your childs grades and attendance on a daily basis. To sign up for ParentPortal, visit our website. I look forward to our continued improvement as we continue the second nine weeks. Do not hesitate to contact me or any member of my staff should you require our assistance. Sincerely, Gene F. Soltner, Ed. D., Principal

Did You Know...

Over 30 years of research shows that one of the most effective ways to increase student achievement is for parents to be actively involved in the education of their children. A 2002 National Education Service study indicates the following: When parents are involved, students tend to achieve more, regardless of socio -economic status, ethnic/racial background or parents educational level. When parents are involved in students education, those students generally have high grades and test scores, better attendance, and more consistently complete homework. Students whose parents are involved in their lives have higher education rates and greater enrollment rates in postsecondary education. By: Mrs. Robinson This year the GNMS Stingray Service Club is off to a great start, and many exciting things are happening at school and throughout the community. Almost fifty students have joined, alive with anticipation and excited by the opportunity to serve and support our community. We started the year off with a meet, greet and scuff removal. The students relished

the opportunity to give back to the school by assisting the custodial staff in removing the scuff marks throughout the school. For our Homecoming Football game the SSC supported GNMS by creating spirit posters and taking on trash detail. Additionally, they assisted the PTA and the Student Activity Coordinator with equipment set-up and breakdown. They continued to fall head over heels for the children of Saturdays Child on the Oncology unit at the Childrens Hospital of the Kings Daughters. Their thoughts and kindness were expressed by

creating Halloween cards, decorations, and trick-or-treating masks. The SSC made a significant impact by lifting the spirits of many children unable to participate in traditional holiday activities. This past weekend, members had a fun-filled day giving selflessly and devoting many hours of their time taking shifts volunteering for the John B. Dey Elementary School Fall Festival. Way to go Stingray Service Club for setting a great example!

Penguin Team
The Penguin students may have finally mastered the art of locker-opening, but theyre certainly keeping busy at GNMS. Heres what theyll be up to: Students will begin reading novels in English. Core students will read Bridge To Terabithia and advanced students will read Oliver Twist. With narrative writing under their belts, students will be working their way towards Literary Analysis this quarter. Core Math students are finishing up their unit on Fractions. Remind students to practice and study Math daily. They should also continue practicing multiplication tables. Pre-algebra students should be reminded to practice and review integer rules and order of operations. Explore Explore!! Unit 2 in Social Studies focuses on European Explorers and the Clash of Cultures. Students will be exploring the motives, obstacles and accomplishments of these brave men and their interactions with the Native Americans. The Penguins are currently enjoying their new habitat of a spacious science lab. We are in the process of understanding the experimental design as we work on identifying physical and chemical changes. Be on the lookout for upcoming projects as we begin to study the Periodic Table of Elements. Every day is an adventure as we waddle into the Penguin science lab.

Waverider Team
The Waveriders are having a super gnarly year! The students are really loving the brand new building and are treating it with great respect. They are chillin in the media center and groovin to the smart boards in every classroom. The schola and the multipurpose room are cool places to have special meetings and events. Lockers were a challenge in the beginning, but they dont seem to be a problem anymore. Those Waveriders can spin those combination locks faster than a DJ at a wedding. Students are finding their way around the gargantuan building with no problems now. They can follow their schedules, and know which classes are every day, and which are every other day. The block scheduling is taking some getting used to. Students are learning a lot more in depth in the longer classes. Successful students do assignments for classes on the day the assignment is given while the material is still fresh in their heads. Waiting a day t do the assignment isnt working out for many students because they have to depend on notes or handouts to refresh their memories of the lesson they had the day before. Parents should encourage students to do assignments on the day they are assigned, and not wait. Students need to make sure they are writing homework in planners, so they know the due dates of projects, dates of tests and quizzes, etc. At this time, all parents should be signed up for Listserve and parent portal. Listserve is the email of homework assignments sent daily, and Parent Portal gives parents access to their childrens grades. Both of these services can be accessed on the Great Neck Middle School website. Teachers are thankful for the many supplies parents have sent in for the classrooms---tissues, wipes, baggies, etc. As the weather gets colder, the demand for tissues will increase. Parents please make sure your little darlings have lip balm because the air is much drier. The start of second quarter means students will need new supplies of pencils, pens, and paper, etc.

Orca Team
Our Orca students have settled in well, and we look forward to the second quarter. Please check occasionally to see that your student has the proper supplies and that their binder is organized. Orcanization is the key to success. Please also make sure you have signed up for Listserv and Parent Portal. With ListServ you will know what homework is due for that day, and you can also get announcements, updates, and information about school programs . Parent Portal allows you access to your grades any time

you desire. You will find information on how to sign-up for both these services on the Great Neck website. Students will begin reading new novels in English. Core students will read Bridge To Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, and advanced students will read Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens. Science students are learning about the elements and strengthening their knowledge of the Periodic Table before they tackle chemistry. Social Studies students are finishing up the explorers to the new world and will begin

learning about the causes of the Revolutionary War. Math students are honing their skills with fractions, and will move into forms of algebra. We understand the transition to middle school is difficult, but students have done very well. One concern we still have is that students do their homework on the day it is assigned and not wait. Longterm projects should be included in their agenda with the due date prominently recorded. Thank you for your continued support.

We began a study of life characteristics, cells, and cell processes. We are finishing the Cells unit and will begin the Genetics unit. In social studies, we are riding up San Juan Hill with Teddy Roosevelt to study the Spanish-American War. Afterwards, we are looking at how progressive reforms in America have changed government, laws, and the way we live. Reform-

Students were asked to weigh-in on the debate between manned and robotic missions. Our next unit will be Meteorology. In Physical Science, the students have been learning about the elements and the periodic table. They did a great job on the Time line of the History of the Atom project. Our next unit will be chemical reactions. English students are spending their time reading and writing. Core English students, who began the year reading short stories and non-fiction texts, are now in the middle of their first novel, Freak the Mighty. On the side, they are learning to punctuate simple, compound, and complex sentences and to appreciate figurative language. Advanced English students began the year with the adventures in Beowulf and currently are engaged with the chivalrous tale, Don Quixote. Nearly every day in class, students log onto Edmodo, where they keep their notes, sometimes take quizzes, and submit essays for grading. Please welcome Mrs. Waite as Mrs. Julians long term sub while she is on maternity leave. Mrs. Waite is a retired social studies teacher and will make the transition seamless for our students while they continue learning the many interesting topics of government.

Islander Team
Islander Honors Geometry students have been learning about the proof writing process by learning the many intricacies of logic and proving segment and angle relationships. Most recently we have discovered the wonderful relationships between parallel lines and angles. Core Math students have covered many topics ranging from one-step equations to the Real Number System. We have just started working on ratios and unit rate and will apply this topic further with proportions. In Earth Science this grading period, we have been learning about mapping and astronomy. Students did a wonderful job on their Take a Hike! performance

Marlin Team
The Marlin teams advanced English classes are wrapping up the first unit. We kicked off the year with Beowulf, are currently finishing Don Quixote, and are moving into the second unit which will include a research project and A Tale of Two Cities. Charles Dickens has been known to befuddle the best of students, so be on your toes and take advantage of morning tutoring opportunities whenever offered. Our core English classes have almost completed our first unit and our first novel, Freak the Mighty. The students are totally engaged in the plot of the story, are succeeding with creating their own Cornell notes, and are demonstrating their mastery of the material on a daily basis using Edmodo. Our classes will begin the new unit in the next week, starting with the Diary of Anne Frank. We will pair Anne Frank's story with a research project.

During this quarter our Earth Science students have covered important SOL information on the Scientific Method, Topographic Maps, and Astronomy. We studied the Solar System, Space Exploration, and Stellar Evolution. Next quarter we will cover weather and climate. This unit is very familiar to students as we cover the big name storms that have occurred of the last several years. In Physical Science we are finishing up the quarter with information on atoms, elements, and compounds. Next quarter we will focus on the Periodic Table. We will spend most of our time learning how the elements form compounds and how their properties change. We will include many in-class projects along with quizzes and labs. Next quarter we will cover sound and other types of energy.
