Unit Title: Comparing and Contrasting Poetry of Walt Whitman


Unit Duration: Three class meetings Grade Level/ Subject: 6th Grade Standards:
CCGPS: ELACC6RL9: Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics. AASL Standards: 3.3.5 Contribute to the exchange of ideas within and beyond the learning community. 3.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess.

Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to compare and contrast different works of poetry written by Walt Whitman using Google Docs, wikis, and blogs. Materials and Equipment to Prepare: Wiki with provided resources. Create a Google Docs document that allows users with a link to compare and contrast different ideas together. Go to Day 1. Visit the links about Walt Whitmans biography. Take notes about important events that happened in Walt Whitmans Life. Visit your blog and tell us in order, ten important things that happened in Walt
Whitman's life.

Day 2: Compare and Contrast Walt Whitmans poetry using visualization. Go to the pbworks wiki. Go to Day 2. The student will read three poetry samples using the pbworks wiki page. After reading the sample, the student will then compare and contrast what he/she visualized in each of the poems using the Google Doc link on the Day 2 page. Day 3: Bringing your visualization to life Go to day three in the pbworks wiki. Now that the student was able to compare and contrast using visualization, the student will now explore more Walt Whitman selections while listening to some selections being read aloud. After reading several samples, the student will take white paper and illustrate what they saw when visualizing one of the poems.
