Common Mans Face of the Indian Association

By M.A. Waheed
Years ago the leading newspaper from Mumbai, The Times of India carried a cartoon by R.K. Laxman which depicted a common mans portrait. This common man by his facial expressions conveyed a powerful story of the day. No words were needed. The impact was impactful. So is the case with the newly elected President Guryam Singh of the Tricity India Association (TRICIA). Without saying a word he mesmerizes with his actions. It is no exaggeration to claim that you can call him at midnight with a flat tire on a highway, chances are 99% of the times he will be there with the speed and passion of your own private 911 crew. Coming from a farming background in Haryana, Guryam brings raw, rustic and right solutions to problems. He is son of the soil and behaves like one. Hard working and sincere in any assignment he undertakes he leaves no stone unturned to succeed. Guryams mantra is, I dont want to fail. And he proves this by the accomplishment of his stores in downtown Albany. Starting from scratch, Guryam has gone round the block of toiling, tilling and thrashing every job that needs to be done to run a business. Withwatching the cricket games played by India anywhere in the world. And in the slog overs he will pray to all the avatars of Krishna Bhagwan, all the Gurus of Sikhism and all the Peers of India to shower victory on the Indian team. And eventually accept the result as a true blue-blooded sportsman. Jeet ya Haar Ooparwale ke haath is embedded in Guryams heart. As President of the Tricity India Association, Guryam leads from the front setting an example of duty, dignity and discipline. With his team he plans to orchestrate programs that will appeal, afford and award all segments of the Indian Diaspora. Raja and Runk have the same affection from him. Under his leadership, TRICIA looks forward to tenure of enjoyable, entertaining and educative sequence of events as never seen before. Guryam may reflect a common mans face but his achievements will be uncommon. Mr. Guryam Singh lives with his wife Kiran and two college-going sons in Latham.

out a calculator he can calculate the math of a business that he has learnt from the laboratory of life. He is a proud graduate from a No Non-Sense School of Business. Guryam has a million friends. If the Indian Association was composed of Democrats and Republicans, he would still be elected and claimed by both the parties. Amiable, humble and nimble Guryam is everybodys friend. Ready and willing to help he is an all-rounder bowling, batting and building on team spirit. If there was one body composed of Amar, Akbar, Ajit that will be Guryam. You can see him vacuuming a temple floor, attending a masjid prayer or serving at a gurudwara langar. His religion is beyond borders. And that endears him to folks of different faiths and thus he generates respect by human credits not by campus scores or pica scores. As a sports enthusiast he is a regular non-Patel at the Patels Volleyball Wednesdays games. He will spend nights

Deer Season Dear

The Thruway Authority offers these tips for motorists to avoid vehicle collisions with deer as they are on the move from now through December: Deer are more active during evening, dusk and dawn. Watch for deer eyes reflecting light from the shoulders of the road. Using high beams and sounding the horn may help to repel a deer, but wont necessarily prevent a collision. Slow down when approaching deer standing at the roadside, as they may run into oncoming traffic. Always wear your seat belt.

Deer often move in groups. Where theres one, there may be more.

Mohabbat ka Silsila Jaari Rahega

Movie moghul, Yashraj Chopra passed away on October 21, 2012 just after he had celebrated his 80th birthday. Lahore born Chopra came to Bombay with 200 rupees to make a career for himself as a film director. He later on worked as an assistant to I.S. Johar and the worked with his own brother. Some of Bollywoods best loved films including Daag, Silsila, Chandni, Deewar, Kabhie Kabhie, Dil to Pagal Hai, Trishul, Darr, Veer Zaara were made under his direction. He had announced that the Diwali 2012 release Jab Tak hai Jaan would be his last film as a director. Yashji, was described by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as an icon of Indian cinema who entertained many generations with his rare creativity. His movies always underscored human relation-

ships and he was a master of romance because he understood the many faces of love and expressed it through poetry, visual extravaganzas of golden tulips as a canvass for passionate lovers and cultural expositions that tugged at our core traditions the brought tears to NRIs, and rural Indians alike. He was always able to attract a blockbuster cast of writers, actors, music directors and cinematographers. It is a well-known fact that he had a weakness for the Swiss Alps which he chose as a location for many of his films. The Swiss have named a lake in their country

after him and called it the Chopra lake. His debut as a film director was in 1959 Dhool ka Phool starring Mala Sinha and Rajendra Kumar which dealt about the subject of illegitimacy. Many of his love stories brought to life the trauma and dramas of alternate relationships and love triangles very sensitively portrayed through the lens of a man who loved to love. His heroines often clad in charming chiffons left a lasting impression on his audiences and conveyed his tale of love through their eyes, their songs and the strong characters they played in his movies. W hether it was Rani Mukherjee or Preeti Zinta in Veer Zaara that connected the borderless human quality between Pakistan and Indias Punjab or the directorial choreography of the song sequence Rang Barase in Silsila that brought to the forefront two powerful actresses Rekha and Jaya Bahaduri representing two worlds and two completely different moulds of womanhood. Yashjis movies touch hearts and unite people across political and religious borders.
