Greeley, Colo., Aug. 15 The Association of Women in Communications will hold its first all member meeting Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Thursday in Aspen C at the University Center. The Club is open to every student including: graduate and undergraduate, male and female. AWC is a student run club that is focused on career development for its members. The biggest thing I have learned is how to talk to people on the phone in a professional way, Katie Owsten, an AWC officer, said. The club hosts a speaker, workshop, or an event at every member meeting to provide as many networking opportunities as possible. For more information find the club on Facebook at AWC Northern Colorado or email the president Hayley Hull at awcnoco@gmail.com.

Backgrounder
The Association of Women in Communications was founded in 1909 by seven women at the University of Washington. In its first years, the women in AWC provided coverage of World War I. During these years, Eleanor Roosevelt forbade men from attending their conferences. Those initial seven women grew into a 3,000 member network of professionals and students. The ages of members range between 18 and 90. In 1990, Wayne Melanson, a professor at the University of Northern Colorado, learned about the importance of AWC from Anita Fleming-Rife. Before his retirement he introduced professor Lin Allen to the club. Allen is currently the advisor, along with professor Gary Swanson. The UNC chapters main goals are to highlight their members individual talents in order to allow their members voices to come through, and to help students build connections with the professional world. With this professional networking goal in mind, officers arrange workshops, outings and conference trips every semester for career development. Their motto is Stay Connected. The group hopes to increase awareness on campus, which w\they hope will lead to increased membership. They welcome all students from every major, even outside the communications field.
