The architect of the project also spoke about Sloane House being a haven of comfort lying in the heart of Accra in the residential area near the airport. It represents the height of contemporary living and redefines modern comfort in Accra. The mission of Comland Ghana Limited is to be a leading player in the construction industry. Placing itself as the first choice provider for the market and this was very evident with the Sloane House specifications. During the presentation Comland Ghana Limited made a donation to the Michael Essien Foundation (MEF) presenting the cheque to the Chairman of MEF, Honorable Mike Gizo and Michael Essien who were pleasantly surprised by this very generous gesture. After the conference guests were ushered onto the terrace for the unveiling of the miniature model of Sloane House. Guests were served with more champagne and finger foods and the night came to a successful conclusion with happy guests leaving with gift bags. e

The Tale of Medusa, The GorGon

O
nce upon a time there lived a beautiful lady called Medusa who lived in the city of Athens in Greece. Medusa was very proud of her beauty and each day boasted outrageously about how pretty she was. Medusa would brag to anybody about how her skin was more beautiful than fresh fallen snow or how her hair glowed brighter than the sun. She could also be heard saying her eyes were greener than the Aegean Sea. Medusa would spend whole days gazing lovingly at her reflection in the mirror. She admired herself in her hand mirror for an hour each morning as she brushed her hair. At one time, Medusa was so intent on admiring herself in the well water for her father's horses that she even forgot to fetch the water in for them. Medusa went on and on about her beauty to anyone and everyone who stopped long enough to hear her. One day when she made her first visit to the Parthenon with her friends. The Parthenon was the largest temple to the goddess Athena in Greece. It was decorated with amazing sculptures and paintings. Everyone who entered was awed by the beauty of the place and couldnt help but think of how grateful they were to Athena, goddess of wisdom, for inspiring them and for watching over their city of Athens. Everyone, that is, except Medusa. When Medusa saw the sculptures, she whispered that she would have made a much better subject for the sculptor than Athena had. She condemned the goddess's painted picture complaining of her thick eyebrows and intimated that the artwork would have been much more wonderful had the painting been that of someone as delicate as her.

When Medusa reached the altar she sighed and said, My it is a beautiful temple. It is a shame it was wasted on Athena for I am so much prettier than her and perhaps someday people will build an even grander temple to my beauty. Athenas priestesses who overheard Medusa gasped. Sacrilege they screamed, shivers ran down the spine of all the people in the temple who quickly began to leave for fear of what might happen if the goddess had overheard Medusas rash remarks. Before long the temple was empty except for Medusa, who was so busy admiring her own reflection in the large bronze doors that she hadn't noticed the swift departure of everyone else. Suddenly, her reflection instead of her own the face of Athena back at her. Vain and said angrily, You think than I am but there is beauty alone. While play and learn, you do admire yourself. Medusa tried to point was an inspiration to and that she made simply looking so lovely, her with a frustrated Athena retorted, swiftly in all mortals. It the sick, teach the the hungry. And by my shall be stripped away fate shall serve as a to control their pride. wavered and features, it was that was reflected foolish girl, Athena you are prettier more to life than others work and little but boast and out that her beauty those around her their lives better by but Athena silenced wave.Nonsense, Beauty fades does not comfort unskilled or feed powers, your beauty completely. Your reminder for people

Beauty fades swiftly in all mortals. It does not comfort the sick, teach the unskilled or feed the hungry. And by my powers, your beauty shall be stripped away completely. Your fate shall serve as a reminder for people to control their pride.

And with those words Medusas face changed to that of a hideous monster. Her hair twisted and thickened into horrible snakes that hissed and fought each other atop her head. Medusa, your pride has brought this on you. You are cursed, henceforth when any one beholds your face, the mere sight of it will turn them to stone, proclaimed the goddess, Even you, Medusa, should you see your reflection you will instantly be turned into a rock. And with that, Athena sent Medusa with her hair of snakes to live with the blind monsters -- the gorgon sisters -at the ends of the earth, so that no innocents would be accidentally turned to stone at the sight of her. Well until her head was cut off by Persueus and thats a story for another time. Beware of pride and avoid the fate of poor Medusa. e

ABRokYIRE PAlAvA
uame Brown is an America born Ghanaian (that is if there is anything in the likes of that); he has never seen the shores of the motherland. His idea of Ghana is based on hearsay from people who left the shores several decades before he was born. We were colleagues at one of those Yankee Colleges; when I told him I was going back to Ghana for vacations, he asked me with a mystified expression Ghana? What is there to do? As a Ghanaian native living in faraway abrokyire, I have had to answer this question many times. Most people only hear of Ghana through the exploits of our national soccer team the black stars. They are quick to mention the names of Asamoah Gyan, Micheal Essien and Dede Ayew but are clueless about the opportunities that Ghana offers in terms of tourism, entertainment and business ventures. I have always found it interesting to see hordes of people going in and out of this
36

country. Today, Ghana thrives on its tourism and expatriate populations who import new tastes to the already savory melting-pot that is the bubbly Ghana. Like myself, thousands of other young men and women leave Ghana for higher education; a time comes when we leave our parents and travel off to abrokyire. Yet we always come back, be it for family or for the sheer excitement of reliving our childhood. To be honest: we often use the former as an excuse for the latter our guilty pleasure. Many foreign childhood friends of mine return to Ghana even though their parents are longgone. Its no news that the youth cannot get enough; there must be something sweet in the air? In flight back to the motherland last summer, I was asked by a young passenger "what fun is there in the country? I was awestruck; did he really think my beloved homeland was boring? Did he not know of Oxford Street in Osu

or Bantama high street in OseiKrom or beach road in Tadi? The places all Ghanaian burghers flock to for a taste of home? My one and only, go-to destination; one I will guiltily choose over any world-class tourist hot-spot? Imagine that, OseiKrom Boring? This dude needed a tutorial; I took it upon myself to list the endless possibilities for fun. Quizzed about his preferences, he mentioned how he enjoyed good music, and I informed him that Ghana was the birthplace of good African music. Chaley, Ghana is the place for you. Who enjoys a good beat more than the azonto-dancing, Clubbeer-drinking, club-hopping youth of Ghana today? I quickly whipped out my iTunes library and introduced him to the likes of Sarkodie, Buk Bak, Brazilian haired Eazy, Baby Jet, and then some VIP and Kwabena Kwabena. He then asked what keeps me coming back to Ghana, since he had seen me sometime back on a flight back to Accra.

Home sweet home, I replied, theres nothing that compares to the vibe of Ghana; In Ghana I am like a star on my own, I am me, not some stranger looking over his shoulder, I have family and a feeling of belonging and the great local ambience. Once in Accra, Im like a small VIP, there are lots of hang out spots like Tantra, known for its European-like construct and exciting ambiance; Bella Roma - whose pizza is enough to lure one in coupled with its openaired dance-floor and friendly DJs and baristas; Firefly, with a unique fusion of a lounge, bar and night-club; Lexington with their unbelievable supply of world class cocktails , a DJ stand that dishes out good music coupled with its very extensive bar. If you want some outdoor action and to mingle well with the local crowd, get yourself a copy of Ghanas top free magazine, Enjoy Accra, for the

Club Beer Social Guide which provides you an incredible array of good spots and what they offer. Of course if you get tired of the bustling night-life, my immediate choice Tawalas a beach side hang out where you can relax and enjoy some good meat on the beach front. Why not take advantage of the shores of our Atlantic Gulf? Visit Ada, the beautiful and calm lake front city about an hours drive from Tema. There are hostels for rent or stay at the two to five star hotels, live your own personal paradise. The lake-shores, and the many water and boating activities, are only a hop, skip, and a jump away from your window. Kumasi is hub of purely local entertainment, the streets by day are shops selling all sorts of wares and by night, the streets suddenly transform into lanes of drinking spots.

By this point, the young man apparently was looking at me with befuddled eyes. Want to grab a quick bite after dancing away the night? Epos spot is a well-known crowd-pleaser among the locals and visitors alike. No longer Osus bestkept-secret, this well-hidden spot was once tucked away between the other ordinary chop bars of Osu, bearing the best rice and chicken known to man. Now I saw in his eyes real hunger , hunger to discover and I could not end my tutorial without letting him in on Auntie Munies Labone Waakye for a Facebook Waakye party or Katawudieso, Nyanibas unparalleled rice and waakye boutique. With a satisfied grin I lay back on my chair and began pondering and planning with passion my 4 weeks summer holiday in Ghana. Onua, see you when I see you. Enjoy Ghana!! e

Cradle of the Human Family

The real spirit of the world comes from women much more than from men from mothers most of all, who carry the key of our souls in their bosoms -Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

I think male children often lose their sensitivity to the embracing spirit of motherly love, and by extension, the essence of love as expressed and felt by women.

believe that one of the great disorders of the world is a misunderstanding of the value and role of women. The propagation of the misunderstanding is by men and accepted by far too many women. In a history dominated by violence, men found it easy to oppress women, and thought of all sorts of clever justifications for the relegation of women to the status of third class citizens. One wonders if part of the male desire to keep women in their place stems from an unconscious fear of the power of women. Is it a base desire for power and selfaggrandizement that turns men away from their earliest memories of the powerful

influence and love that they received from their mothers? Do they worry that selfish agendas will come to nought if they lift women up to their rightful positions? The most valuable thing for a male infant is love. At that age, male babies are very clear about their priorities, and speak the language of love with every smile. In the book, Mary Poppins, the twins, John and Barbara, who had not yet reached the age of one, could still speak the language of the birds and the trees and the sun and the wind. As they grew, they lost their ability to understand. In the same way, I think male children often lose their sensitivity to the embracing spirit of motherly love, and by extension, the essence of love as expressed and felt by women. Everything starts from that quality of love-the action. Male babies revel in it, and male adults find solace in it, if they open their hearts to the real value of their wives, their sisters and of course their

mothers. As women are able to love with a motherly and compassionate core, men also can feel deeply and love with the same compassion. The nature of men and women are different, but if we did not share some degree of each others attributes, how could we possibly relate to each other? One might compare a man to a riverbed and a woman to the water that flows across the rocks. They both have unique value, and men are certainly capable of embracing others with love. It is the love that flows from the hearts of women, however, that most closely resembles the original essential aspect of Gods embracing love. It is this transcendent quality of motherly and feminine love that imbues women with such incredible value. We love our mothers, as we remember them on Mothers Day, and let us remember the Jewish proverb that says, God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers. A world with mothers is a world filled with hope for life. e

Salmon
with Ingredients

Goat Cheese

Grilled Nectarines

2 6-ounce skinless salmon fillets (3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 nectarine, pit removed and cut into 8 wedges 1 tablespoon real maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 2 1-ounce slices/rounds goat cheese 4 basil leaves, cut into thin strips olive oil to drizzle on top 1 cup cooked couscous

1. Preheat grill pan (you can also use a heavy-bottomed frying pan) to medium-high heat. 2. Rub salmon fillets with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sprinkle, on both sides, with salt. 3. Toss nectarine wedges with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, maple syrup and crushed red pepper flakes. 4. Place salmon into pre-heated pan and cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until cooked through; salmon should still be moist with a slightly dark pink center. (Cooking time may vary depending on thickness) 5. If space in the pan, add nectarines and grill or sear until just warmed through and grill marks are visible, about 2 minutes on each side. (This can be done after cooking the salmon, just keep the salmon covered in aluminum foil while the nectarines cook). 6. Serve salmon fillets over a bed of couscous and top with grilled nectarines, goat cheese, strips of fresh basil and a light drizzle of olive oil.

Solutions for June

MEDIUM

This month, you're less hung up on the details of your life and you feel decidedly more outgoing and communicative, dear Aries. For some time now, you have been wrestling with all sorts of small but irritating problems, from health to work. While the pace of your life is unlikely to slow down significantly, your area of focus brings you out from hiding in July. This month is expressive and romantic, and your social life is up and down, but at least it is active! Financial gain could come from communications or siblings, and so can love opportunities.

MEDIUM

Taurus
21/4-21/05 Romance settles down this month after a long period of excitement, but also unrest and uncertainty, dear Taurus. Work heats up - it not only picks up pace, it is more demanding on several levels now. While you prefer that all areas of your life are stable and routine, this might help feed your increased desire to make money and accumulate new possessions. Be more cautious physically, particularly from the 1719. Money-making ideas can come from dreams or from something you remember from the past.

Gemini
22/5-21/06 Your life is becoming considerably more exciting, dear Gemini. You are kinder, friendlier, and less focused on minor concerns in favor of the bigger picture. You could learn something surprising about shared resources around the 3rd. You concern yourself less with domestic matters and more with recreation and entertainment. July puts the spotlight on money matters, personal possessions, sensual pleasures, and financial security. Energy levels this month are increasing but still not super high, so take some time out from the busy pace of your life to catch your breath. 40

Cancer
22/6-23/07 July is a power month for you, dear Cancer, but it is also likely to be stressful at times. You have the chance to show your creativity on the job this month. Advances or bonuses may be in the offing in the first week of the month, after which things settle down considerably. Something from your past could resurface this month, but avoid dwelling on it. Instead, forgive yourself, learn from it, and move forward. A partner can have a surprising revelation on the 3-4. Home life becomes more animated and family life demands more of your time.

Libra
24/9-23/10 People in your life have been growing accustomed to a more withdrawn and even serious quality to you recently, dear Libra, but with Mars moving into your sign (active until the last week of August), a decidedly more confident and assertive side emerges. Your domestic life demands more attention from you on the 3-4. Recent relationship pressures tend to ease. Receiving news about the past that gives you new information about your current circumstances figures strongly this month, and career matters are likely to push forward as a result.

Capricorn
22/12-20/01 Your needs and desires might often seem eclipsed by those of a partner this month, dear Capricorn. Or, in general, your personal needs and plans are on the back burner for now. However, relationships with others require some attention, and playing a supportive role is your best bet for setting things right. All is resolved in your favor by the last week of July--a time when financial matters begin to peak. Recognition-both personal and professional--is likely on the 3rd. Ambitions charge up this month, but watch for impulsive moves and reactions, especially around the 17-19.

L eo
24/7-23/08 A quieter period in your life is in store until July 22nd, dear Leo, after which life begins to play in your style. The rest and privacy you need is yours at the beginning of July, although there are plenty of stimulating dramas playing out around you. There are no shortage of invitations and things to do - it is more about your ability to pick and choose. Secrets and whispers delight this month, and you may willingly make a few sacrifices to be with a special someone. You meet with perfectionist standards at work, but you are certainly worrying less about money this month.

Scorpio
24/10-22/11 Partnership matters are moving forward this month, and so are your finances, dear Scorpio. However, you and a partner could go head-to-head mid-month on a financial matter. The intensity of the confrontation could pull out some deep issues that have needed release for some time. It's likely to push your relationship forward by leaps and bounds. Love is private, intimate, and passionate this month - share yourself with bravery. Accept support if offered, as good things come from others at this point in your life. From the 17-19, watch for indiscretion especially in the workplace.

A quarius
21/01-19/02 While work demands more than the usual attention this month, dear Aquarius, July brings good energy for breaking out of routines and enjoying yourself more fully. Recently, you've been rather content to stick around the neighborhood and to follow the same old routine, but the urge for adventure and experience can arise suddenly early month. Many recent pressures tend to ease for you this month, and this frees you up to explore recreational activities. While romance is favored, a more committed relationship may involve tricky mixed signals from mid-month.

Virgo
24/8-23/09 This month, expressing your uniqueness is especially important to you, dear Virgo, and the need to work cooperatively within the framework of a group of people is likely to figure strongly. Your independent side has been prominent in recent months, but this month, you are softening rough edges. Nevertheless, you are still fighting for your rights, and you are demanding a show of respect. Around the 3-4, a surprising romantic proclamation or revelation could occur. Work matters are more pleasant in July and your drive to improve them further is strong.

Sagittarius
23/11-21/12 Early July is strong for love relationships, flirtations, and your social life, dear Sagittarius. In fact, your social life, which may have been on the dry side in recent months, is picking up pace considerably all month. A partner (business or personal) may be re-visiting old issues that you'd rather forget altogether, however. Money matters that seemed to have been settled in the past crop up again. Tensions about money can rise from the 17-19, particularly involving friends and children. Overall, however, your gracious manner this month attracts positive experiences.

Pisces
20/02-20/03 You've been pouring a lot of energy into relationships in recent months, dear Pisces, and it hasn't been entirely of the pleasant variety. Announcements can be made on the 3-4 that involve a friend, but this can also be a time that a friendship matter comes to a head. For some of you, your intimate life heats up in July. Although money and power dynamics may still need straightening out, you can experience more excitement and intimacy with a special someone this month. Watch for mixing friendship and money on the 17-19. All month is strong for home decorating and entertaining from home.

Kofi Nduro
Kofi Nduro has been painting for over twenty years. He trained at the Ghanatta College of Art in Accra. He sees himself essentially as an African traditionalist who is steeped in the lore of African art. His themes are picked from traditional African forms, symbols, womanhood and landscapes. Kofis style evolved over the past twenty years due to his dedication, creation and an in-depth search for an identity in the world of art. The result of this soul searching is apparent in the vibrant movement and every-day life of the African people he depicts. He usually paints in acrylics and on canvas or paper. Kofi is widely collected in Ghana and Europe as well as here in the United States. e

Folks, Your monthly Club Social guide is taking on new elements and I want to express my gratitude to all the spots and bar owners who have been kind enough to allow us into their premises. You are the stars of this Guide and I value your participation. This month our tour took us to the Garden city of Kumasi and the port city of Tema. We bring you exclusive insider details of what each spot is famous for, from the tastiest Fufu and Aponkye Nkrakra or face the wall to the best Khebabs on offer anywhere in Ghana.
