GENERAL

1.1

PURPOSE

2 (5)

No.

Reference

This use case covers the analysis of the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI)
of an MS in order to obtain preliminary addressing information for the HLR and other
parameters needed for traffic control purposes.
1.2

DESCRIPTION
The SGSN determines the IMSI number series to which the IMSI belongs when a base
use case request IMSI analysis. The parameters associated with the IMSI number
series are used to obtain a preliminary HLR address and for subsequent traffic control
activities.

1.3

SCOPE
This abstract use case describes the analysis of the IMSI.
This use case starts when a base use case requests an IMSI analysis and ends when
the analysis is performed.

Home PLMN APN

operator identifier

DNS name uniquely identifying the GPRS PLMN.

IMSI

The IMSI consists of the Mobile Country Code (MCC), the

Mobile Network Code (MNC) and the mobile subscriber
1
identification number (MSIN) .

IMSI number series

An IMSI number series is a sequence of leading digits

common to the IMSIs of a group of subscribers. The IMSI
number series comprises of at least the MCC and the MNC.
All subscribers with IMSIs within the same IMSI number
series therefore belong to the same PLMN.

Mobile Global Title

A configurable number of leading digits of the original IMSI

is replaced by another sequence of digits. Normally, a
country code and a network code substitute the MCC and
2
the MNC .

Numbering plan

Determines if the preliminary HLR address follows the

E.212 or E.214 numbering plan

Roaming status

Indicates whether the subscribers are home subscribers or

visitors from another mobile network

PRE-CONDITIONS

2.3

MAIN FLOW
The use case is initiated when a base use case request IMSI analysis.
Step M1: IMSI number series
1. SGSN verifies that the IMSI belongs to an existing IMSI number series.
Step M2: Roaming status
2. SGSN determines the roaming status of the MS.

Reference

Step M3: HLR address = MGT

1. SGSN verifies that the matching IMSI number series is associated with a numbering
plan indicator E.214
2. SGSN addresses the HLR with the Mobile Global Title.
Step M4: Home PLMN APN operator identifier
1. SGSN determines the home PLMN APN operator identifier.
The use case terminates
2.4

ALTERNATIVE FLOW(S)

2.4.1

Step A1: Unknown IMSI number series

This flow starts after M1 in the main flow:
1. SGSN verifies that the MS IMSI number does not belong to an existing IMSI
number series.
The use case terminates.

2.4.2

Step A2: HLR address = IMSI

This flow starts after M2 in the main flow:
1. SGSN verifies that the matching IMSI number series is associated with a numbering
plan indicator E.212
2. SGSN sets the unmodified IMSI as preliminary HLR address.
The use case terminates
