Social Aspect of Motivation to Choose Teacher education

This journal is about the research why people want to be teachers. Then, we will find the motivations behind this. The research participants consist of 303 Australian and German teacher educations students. This research focused on answering 3 questions. There are: 1. Who are the people reported by Australian and German teacher education students as most important in shaping their decision become teacher? 2. How strong are the relative influences of different categories of other people? 3. What types of influences do other people have in shaping decision to become a teacher? The results are: 1. The most important people are immediate family (34.7%), friends in wider community (19.1%), wider community (9.2%) and extended family (7.9%). 2. A small percentage (1.6%) nominated self as the most important factor. However, the strongest relationship was immediate family as it was the closest to the centre of the circles. In comparison, the influences of immediate family for Australian students are stronger than German students. 3. The types of influence are negative and positive. The positive (76%) more than negative (21.9%) nominations and 2.1% did not indicate whether the influence was positive or negative. For types of positive influence, the most nominated category was general support such as showing general interest and encouragement offering general positive comments, wanting the best for person and having a belief in the person. From the answer of number one we know that the most people who influence person to be teacher are closest people like immediate family and friends in wider community. For number two shows that to be a teacher extrinsic motivation is stronger than intrinsic motivation. Number three answer gives information that positive influences are more than negative influences. The strongest positive influence is general support. Lets be focused on it. Want the best for person include needs factor. The example is in the table six, parents said to him or her (German), We stand behind what you do and always help you! It means that she or he decide to be teacher because want to make his parents be proud of him or her. In other word, he or she wants to be meaningful person for parents. Belief in person include to belief factor. A male Australian who has many friends that always support everything he does. It means that because of his friends support, he take teacher education and survive on it. Emotional support includes emotion and interest factors. Someone decides to be teacher because of inspired by a character in a movie who made a difference in childs life. It means that although it is only from a character of movie, but it can influence an interesting and emotional of person. So, finally he becomes motivated to be teacher. Based on our opinion, we conclude that this journal involve two motivation theories. It is combination of social cognitive and socio cultural. As prove, in social cognitive, it needs thinking process. For example when someone inspired by a character in movie, he or she starts to think that a teacher is a good profession. So, on that time, he or she decides to be teacher. While in the social cultural theory we find in table six. Someone decides to be teacher can give contribution for both of students and parents. In the end, motivation gives a big influence for someone to decide something.
