Advent Candle Liturgy: Week 1


Narrator! Today is the First Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation for the great festival of Christmas. Why do we have these candles? These candles remind us that Jesus is the Light Of The World, who came to live among us at Christmas. We light an extra candle each week to tell a different part of the story. What does this first candle tell us? The first candle is called the Candle of Faith. Will you help me light it?

The Adult and the Child light the first candle. When it is lit, the Adult continues: Adult! We light this candle to remember the great men of faith such as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They trusted in God. We must trust in God too. Thank you. Now I understand. A Prayer for today: Advent God, we thank you for the example of the great men of faith in the Bible. Give us faith that we too may trust in you. Amen.

The First Candle is lit. Narrator! Today is the Second Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation for the great festival of Christmas. Why do we have these candles? These candles remind us that Jesus is the Light Of The World, who came to live among us at Christmas. We light an extra candle each week to tell a different part of the story. What does this second candle tell us? The second candle is called the Candle of Peace. Will you help me light it?

The Adult and the Child light the second candle. When it is lit, the Adult continues: Adult! We light this candle to remember the Prophets in the Bible such as Moses, Elijah and Isaiah. They first told us that Jesus the Prince of Peace was going to be born. Thank you. Now I understand. A Prayer for today: Advent God, we thank you for the Prophets in the Bible. Help us also to be ready to hear your voice. Amen.

The First and Second Candles are lit. Narrator! Today is the Third Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation for the great festival of Christmas. Why do we have these candles? These candles remind us that Jesus is the Light Of The World, who came to live among us at Christmas. We light an extra candle each week to tell a different part of the story. What does this third candle tell us? The third candle is called the Candle of Joy. Will you help me light it?

The Adult and the Child light the third candle. When it is lit, the Adult continues: Adult! We light this the mother of the news that God her heart candle to remember Mary Jesus. When she heard she had been chosen by was full of joy.

Thank you. Now I understand. A Prayer for today: Advent God, we thank you for Mary. We pray that we too may share her joy at the birth of Jesus. Amen.

The First, Second and Third Candles are lit. Narrator! Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation for the great festival of Christmas. Why do we have these candles? These candles remind us that Jesus is the Light Of The World, who came to live among us at Christmas. We light an extra candle each week to tell a different part of the story. What does this fourth candle tell us? The fourth candle is called the Candle of Love. Will you help me light it?

The Adult and the Child light the fourth candle. When it is lit, the Adult continues: Adult! We light this candle to remember John the Baptist. He came to announce that Jesus was coming to tell of Gods love for all of us. Thank you. Now I understand. A Prayer for today: Advent God, we thank you for John the Baptist. We pray that we too may be ready to welcome Jesus. Amen.

An Advent Candle Liturgy: Week 5


The Four other Candles are lit. Narrator! Today is the End of Advent. We have been preparing for four weeks and now Christmas is here! Why do we have these candles? These candles remind us that Jesus is the Light Of The World, who came to live among us at Christmas. We lit an extra candle each week to tell a different part of the story. What does this final candle tell us? The final candle is for the Birth of Jesus. Will you help me light it?

The Adult and the Child light the final candle. When it is lit, the Adult continues: Adult! The flame of this candle reminds us that Jesus is our one true Light, and that if we follow Him we will never walk in darkness. Thank you. Now I understand. A Prayer for today: Loving God, we thank you for Jesus. May the Light of Jesus Christ shine in our hearts today and always. Amen.
