ment leader, the Silica tyre, Black Chili
compound tyres have 26 % less rolling
resistance, 30% more grip traction and
a 5% higher wear resistance.

VectranTM’s advantage
VectranTM is a thermoplastic multi-fiber
yarn that is made from melted VectraTM
fluid-crystal-polymer, which we use in
the casing of our top line tyres as
puncture protection material. VectranTM
is more cut-resistant than Aramid,
five times stronger than steel and also
lighter than a Nylon Double Breaker.
It loses no grip when it’s wet.

Our Vectran and Black Chili technologies have been radi-
cally applied to this uncompromising race tyre set. The new
GP Attack benefits from its special version of our Black
Chili compound that gives the streamlined 22 mm front tyre
more grip with lower rolling resistance. The optimum front
wheel tyre gets you quickly into the turns, feeling light and
responsive whilst providing ample service life.
The new GP Force is a powerful rear wheel specialist and

with its 24 mm section combined with a fast Black Chili
compound, it gives excellent traction and road handling
that’s second to none. Both tyres are made with Vectran
puncture protection and show wear and tear levels via
indicators in the tread, details that show professionals are
at work.

Grand Prix 4000 The star in the peloton!

For the coloured GP 4000 tyres, the activated silica com-
pound improves the handling at stability limits and gives
great rolling resistance. The anti-tear formula in the rubber
compound prevents tread brittleness while increasing
mileage performance. Xirallic colours give your machine a
look of stylish elegance. The extra special thing about the
GP 4000 and GP 4000s is their puncture protection made
from Vectran™ liquid crystal fibres.

The patented Vectran™ Breaker reconciles the conflicting
goals of low weight, low rolling resistance and top puncture
and cut resistance in a fascinating manner. The Vectran™
fluid crystal fibres were developed for airbag systems in
the automotive and aerospace industries. The material is
extremely tear and cut resistant and is also flexible.
It retains these properties even under constant stress –
as opposed to Aramid.

Grand Prix 4-Season Technology from hell!
Thanks to its DuraSkin™ anti-tear fabric, the Grand Prix 4-Sea-
son holds up under extreme conditions. In the Paris – Roubaix
race, the “Hell of the North”, cyclists equipped with DuraSkin™
enhanced tyres have the fewest tyre related problems during
the race. Incorporating our special wear resistant carbon com-
pound, the tyre is characterized by very good mileage perform-
ance as well as excellent adhesion on wet roads and at low
temperatures. With the 23 mm, 25 mm and 28 mm versions, the
Grand Prix 4-Season makes it possible to select the right tyre
for various road qualities and comfort requirements. A double
Vectran breaker belt under the tread raises the puncture and
cut protection to the highest level available on the market.
Grand Prix Triathlon What do German Conti tyres have in common with
Hawaiian leis? They both adorn the Ironman winner!
Its Vectran Breaker anti puncture belt withstands even
sharp-edged volcano ash. With a “speedy” slick tread pat-
tern and tightly woven carcass, it is optimized for consistent
top speeds. Indicators in the tread show the wear rate of
the tyre and it has all the capability characteristics of the
Grand Prix 4000 but is styled towards multisports athletes.
With our Black Chili compound also being a feature of this
tyre, the GP Triathlon sports all the latest tyre technology
from Korbach, Germany!
Grand Prix Supersonic Faster than the speed of sound!

With the Grand Prix Supersonic your contact with the road
can be tuned to minimum weight and minimum rolling
resistance. Together with a “Race 28 Supersonic” inner
tube, our quickest tyre weighs only 210 g! The slick rolling
area made out of a carbon black mixture looks cool and
is of course made using our Black Chili recipie. But be
cautious! The Grand Prix Supersonic is a very apt weapon
in fighting for a personal best time, although for this extra
speed, the tyre does not feature any additional puncture
protection and has limited mileage use. With this in mind,
the Grand Prix Supersonic is not a tyre for training!
Grand Prix The legend lives!

The name Continental Grand Prix has become a brand in
its own right in cycling circles. The Grand Prix is THE classic
tyre and a sign to quality and performance, a claim which
appears again in the new Grand Prix. Like its predecessor,
the new generation is eager to set own standards. The new
Grand Prix leads the trend towards wide tyres in cycling.
Wider tyres roll easier, have a higher mileage and offer more
comfort and grip. The main size of the Grand Prix is 24 mm.
Wide enough to show off the advantages of wider tyres, but
still light and slim enough to be built into any racing machine.

the house, winter can set in when it wants to. Thanks
to its special cold-running compound, the Ultra Sport
Hometrainer doesn’t experience the heat buildup of a road
tyre, nor does it suffer the tread separation that the road
tyre is prone to under the special loads occurring when
in cycling and braking on the roller’s revolving drums.
The Ultra Sport Hometrainer has been designed explicitly
for rollers and is not suitable for on-road use.

The Competition was the first tyre to feature Black Chili

Grand Prix 4000 Tubular The Challenger.

The all new Grand Prix 4000 Tubular may be missing the
aura of the old champion, but the challenger is enticing
professional cyclists with its new technology. A seamless
casing design improves the rim seating, uniformity and
rolling resistance. The name, the dynamic tread design
of the Grand Prix 4000 and of course a Vectran puncture
protection breaker state the high ambitions of this new tyre.
Naturally, both competitors enter the race with the inno-
vative Black Chili tread mixture. What will you fit to your
carbon road wheels?
Sprinter The specialist for circuit races or the criterium.

Its function is in its name. The Sprinter is a fast tyre for the
shorter road events like criteriums. With a nylon puncture
protection breaker it is now even more reliable without
losing its terrific rolling qualities. Its flexible casing and the
extremely adhesive Black Chili compound keeps contact
with the road even in fast 90° bends. With its low weight
and good acceleration it is most definitely the fastest tyre
in the last 400 metres.
Sprinter GatorSkin The fast endurance runner.

Inheriting the best qualities of the highly popular Ultra
GatorSkin road tyre, namely the durable carbon black
tread mixture, the effective puncture protection breaker
layer and the DuraSkin™ anti-cut fabric. The Sprinter
GatorSkin itself features the typically comfortable and light
feel of a tubular tyre. The professional riders use a similar
combination in their tyres for Paris – Roubaix and other
equipment destroying classics in the springtime. If you
want to ‘get the miles in’, but your streets aren’t covered
with the finest tarmac and you prefer the inconspicuous
function of your tyres, then this is your tubular.

Podium Time Trial onto the Podium.
A tyre for saving those crucial seconds: The Podium is
designed as a pure competition tyre for the lonely battle
against the clock, and is used by professional race teams
for the solo time trials in ProTour events like the Tour de
France, Giro d’Italia and others. Like the Sprinter, we
have also tuned the Podium with Black Chili compound.
To further reduce its rolling resistance we have reduced
the thickness of the tread, compared to last years model.
The Podium is wasted on the training wheels, reserve
them for race day and watch your time splits fall!
Giro The tubular tyre for training.

Tubular tyres are used primarily in competitions because
of their excellent rolling characteristics and very good dry
running properties. With the Giro, you can also rely on
these strengths in training. To ensure that this training tyre
is excellent value for money, we have the no-frills, robustly
manufactured Giro made to our specifications in Asia.
Tubular tyres for

indoor sports
Saalsport Tyres for trick cycling, cycle ball and bicycle polo as
well as indoor wheelchair sports.
The Saalsport grips very well on all indoor surfaces and
does not leave traces of abrasion behind. Its highly firm
casing withstands the extreme strains of indoor cycle
sports and the high shear force of wheelchair sports.
The Saalsport tyre is cemented as a tubular tyre onto
special tub rims. This is the only way to warrant that the
tyre doesn’t jump off of the rim in narrow bends. Accord-
ing to our experience, especially in wheelchair sports a
cemented tubular tyre is irreplaceable.

Olympic The tyre of the Olympics.
The best velodrome race cyclists in the world rely on
the best indoor tyres in the world: Many victories were
achieved with the Olympic in World Cups and Olympic
Games. This is the absolute top product from our tubular
tyre range, manufactured in Korbach. Every structural
element is chosen carefully and mounted by hand –
where a tenth of a second decides races, precision and
perfection are requested. The Olympic is suitable for all
velodrome race cycling disciplines. Its highly firm casing
allows a pressure of up to 15 bar and at the same time it
was optimized for the lowest possible rolling resistance
and the lowest possible weight.
Sonderklasse Continental-Sonderklasse:
The classic for 6-day races.
If the wheels never come to a stop, you can rely on
Continental. The professional mechanics in the smoky
halls of the six-day events have placed their trust in the
Sonderklasse for generations of cyclists. With its fabric
of finely wound cotton yarn, it provides a comfortable
ride, even at high inflation pressures.
Tempo The track tyre for Alpe d’Huez.

As a very lightweight and fast track tyre, the Tempo gath-
ers medals at international track events again and again.
It has already contributed to victories on mountain stages
and time trials in the Tour de France, demonstrating its
versatility. But be careful! The Tempo is a pure competition

Cyclocross Speed For hard and frozen soil.

The Cyclocross Speed is the thoroughbred in wire bead

Speed King The start of a new era!

The Speed King masters the challenges presented
by marathon trails and marathon races. This tyre is

The side walls of our Rubber Queen are cushioned with

tures tubes but stabilizes tyres when you really push the
tyres hard into corners. Brake, drop, push the curve – the

What is special about ProTection?

Continental Mountain bike tyres are built in different versions.
Tyres with the same tread vary in the core, in the structure of casing and in the rubber compound.
Mountain bike tyres

Take for example, the Explorer – it is available in the following versions:
Explorer: 84 tpi casing with wire bead for an economical solution.

ProTection: Light 170 tpi casing with a foldable Kevlar bead and DuraSkinTM
enhanced sidewalls with cut-resistant technology.
Supersonic: Weight-optimized version with a light 170 tpi casing and foldable Kevlar bead.
UST: Tubeless version with 310 tpi and foldable Kevlar bead.
By the way, all of our casings are built with a bias angle of 45°. Only this thread angle provides
the best compromise between high casing flexibility, low friction and excellent adhesion and stability.

Both tyres intermediate tread is laid out for hard to

damp bedrock.
The Supersonic model is made with the performance

conscious racer in mind. We recommend that weekend
Mountain King 2.4 / 2.2 / 2.0 / UST warriors, interested in routes and adventure rather than
grams and watt values use our Protection Version.
The no frills model is available in wire and is foldable.
No “Made in Germany”, no lightweight design, no
duraskin, no black chilli – pure and simple! Allthough

XC / Marathon
Speed King Supersonic 2.3 / 2.1 Light and with a great grip.
The Speed King is out to rule over marathon trails.
Aggressive, light, with great stamina! Featuring a lug
height of 4 mm, it shows greater ability to maintain stamina
than most others. Even after many kilometers of racing
x-country it manages to stand its ground. Even though
others fail terribly.

ProTection 2.2 / 2.0 / UST
Edge 1.9 New 1.9 narrow mud tyre which bites deep down.
Replacing our Survival 2.1, the Edge 1.9 continues the
tradition of great german mud tyre designs. Only those who
take the speed through the bends in XC races lead at the
finish. This requires a tyre with a strong lateral adhesion.
The Edge’s tread is equipped with our new adhesion
mixture and the tyre has a narrow, open and rough tread
design. This is the reason why it is the ideal tyre for rainy
race days or for simply being the mud tyre choice on the
weekend trail rides.
Classic Range
Diesel 2.5 The Freeride Powerplant.

A 2.5 tyre has to withstand a lot of heavy freeride abuse,
that‘s obvious! The Diesel doesn‘t just withstand a lot,
it is lightweight as well. The Diesel excels not only on
downhill stretches, but it makes things a whole lot easier
when heading uphill. A true all-rounder. The favourable
wire version was equipped with additional reinforcement
for bike park use, where the only thing that counts is the
durability measured in drops and jumps.

Slash 2.3 That extra portion of grip:

The specialist for loose terrain and adverse weather
conditions. Our Slash is not the lightest or the most com-
fortable Freeride tyre, it is built for the intrepid Freerider who
pushes the limits further on every ride. Where gravel tracks
and tow paths are of no interest and the rider craves
challenging singletrack, the Slash is a serious tyre choice.
With an open, edgy tread, a new sticky tread mixture and
the reinforced casing options of Wire and ProTection,
it wants to be taken on the rough.
Gravity 2.3 Biking pleasure on all trails.

Tyres of the width 2.3 are versatile. They can be used
on low mountain trails just as well as the Alpencross.
The round tyre cross-section typical for Continental and
the GravityArc™ tread lead to playful handling. The tyre can
be turned easily in curves and reliably sinks its claws into
loose surfaces. The Gravity‘s aggressive appearance does
not contradict its running smoothness – an advantage that
is appreciated especially on asphalt stretches. Incidentally,
it’s the tyre selected by a certain Greg “HB” Herbold.
Vertical 2.3 The modern classic.

The Vertical has everything a classic tyre needs. It is at
home on all trails, really showing what it can do when the
terrain turns rugged. Still the top choice for tours in Alpine
terrain where low weight and high puncture protection are

tyre to serve us all year round, it would be the Continental
Vertical ProTection ... We know riders who swear by these

Vapor 2.1 The Marathon specialist.

Designed as an intermediate tyre for cross country trail
riding and racing, the Vapor concentrates on fast rolling,
using the Gravity Arc tread design. Wide centre lugs keep
the tyre rolling fast whilst the Arcs (lug bases) in the shoul-
ders create stable handling under cornering for predictable
handling. Worth a try for XC marathon racers looking for
faster lap times and good puncture protection.
Explorer 2.1 The all-round athlete.

Exceptionally successful intermediate cross country tyre.
Its spikey “Endless Edge” tread design hooks up on loose
surfaces at all angles of lean and the sharp lugs clear mud
efficiently for when the sky opens and the trails get rain-
swept. For the racers of tomorrow, the Explorer is available
in smaller sizes for children’s bikes.

Twister Supersonic 1.9 The speed master.

A tyre for cross-country competition in dry/hard conditions.
Thanks to its new feature, the Black Chili tread compound,
the Twister offers the lowest possible rolling resistance
and unbelievable adhesion. Weighing in at a mere 370 g,
the Twister Supersonic is a true tuning component which
doesn‘t slow things down in the least. But beware, Super-
sonic tyres offer limited puncture protection compared to
other formats.

Deutsche Technik in detail Casings and Tpi
Casing construction and specifications
for Continental tyres
We mainly use nylon fabric to build up our bicycle tyre casings. This
material has an extremely high tensile strength, and can withstand the
effects of weather during biking, and can also be processed easily in
combination with rubber. Continental uses the four quality grades
22 tpi, 28 tpi, 60 tpi and 110 tpi.
Tpi is the number of fabric threads per inch or per 2.54 cm.
The finer the fabric, the more flexible and puncture-proof the tyre will
be. The coarser the fabric, the more rigid and cut-resistant the tyre.
So the right choice of fabric depends on the intended application.
We add anti-puncture reinforcement to the basic three-ply casing.

This may be in the form of a single-ply or two-ply Nylon Breaker.
It may be additionally reinforced with Kevlar™ or be made from

rubber. In our Grand Prix 4000 and Competition high-performance
tyres we now incorporate a breaker made from Vectran™, a liquid
crystal fibre with ultra-high resistance to cuts and punctures.
To enable you to understand the tyre’s construction, our tyre speci-

fications indicate the number of plies in the basic casing, the total
number of fabric threads in the three plies of the basic casing and the
type of puncture protection:

Compound technology Mileage
The tread compound is the starting point of any tyre. It makes the Speed Grip
difference between a good and bad tyre. The secret formulas hold the
key to why one tyre performs better than the next and why one tyre
grips the surface securely whilst another spins off out of control.
It is no secret what the basic materials are, but the art, just as with a
fine wine, lies in how the manufacturer combines the extras.
Elastomers: natural and synthetic rubber determine the basic

properties of the compound. Rubber is the main component of the
compound. The rubber determines the grip, the rolling resistance
and the wear of the tread.
Fillers or reinforcers: this is where carbon blacks and silicates are

used. They determine the hardness and the elasticity of the rubber.
Sulphur: during vulcanisation, the sulphur cross-links with the

polymer chains of the rubber and transforms the plastic raw
compound into elastic rubber.
Oils, waxes and dyes: they improve the processing and give the
tyres their colour.

The innovation in puncture protection

Vectran™ is a multifibred thermoplastic yarn, made of melted Vectra™
Liquid Crystal Polymer. Vectran™ is the only LCP fibre in the world,
which is made using a spinning process. Reinforcing and matrix fibres
made of Vectran™, are lightweight, extremely durable, have reliable
longevity and are five times stronger as steel.
With a layer (breaker) of Vectran™ under the tread, the tyre is protected
from breakdowns more efficiently than with a Nylon Double Breaker.
This is because a single Vectran™ layer is lighter, more flexible and
stronger than the two nylon layers.
Airtight
The new processing techniques have succeeded in our existing puncture
protection deposits to supplement our new PolyX Breaker. For the first time
we have used polyester as Breaker material and rely on our experience in
car tyres, where we have used polyester successfully for many years.
The advantage of our new PolyX fabric lies however in details. The fibers are
often crossed in the manufacturing process. This gives us a dense fabric
with a minimum of space between the individual threads.
Result: Whether sharp thorns or large shards, PolyX is failsafe and is very
resistant to any kind of foreign body without reducing the rolling resistance.

· Race tyres for the front wheel have different responsibilities to the
rear tyre and so our TPS tyres team up perfectly to give the optimal
racing performance.
· The lightweight 22 mm tyre is the perfect size for attacking turns

safely whilst also rolling fastly and cutting through the air efficiently.
The extra sticky Black Chili TPS front compound assures a safe
passage through the corners, even in damp criterium races.
· The 24 mm rear tyre has a harder wearing rear TPS Black Chili com-

Supersonic guarantees the ultimate speed experience. The Super-
Sonic product line for racing bikes and mountain bikes are the ultimate
speed weapon – faster in the race, in time trials or marathons. Each
Supersonic product is optimized because of extremely low weight and
reduced rolling friction. All elements of the Supersonic tyres and tubes
are limited to the absolutely technically necessary. This refers to the
thickness of the tyre casing and the thickness of the tread compounds
and the wall thickness of the tubes.
We only use the finest materials: high-quality nylon for the casing,
the latest Black chili rubber compound technology and sophisticated
profile designs for the various operating conditions. To be uncompro-
mising in weight and rolling resistance also means cuts in other tyre
properties. The performance and the breakdown protection of Super-
sonic tyres are not comparable with those of our best all-round tyres.
Our engineers and chemists have provided technical excellence,

with the SuperSonic products to be top notch in the racing and tuning.
With a similar capacity for innovation, we offer the amateur athletes

and a recommendation accepted in good faith by regulars.
To give your recommendation that special note, we‘re also

offering you light and Supersonic lightweight tubes, in
addition to the classic butyl tubes, under the Continental
Unitube System.
Brand new in 2008 are our Hermetic Plus inner tubes.

They are especially strong and well sealed, staying inflated
for much longer time periods, saving the need for
continued inflating.
