Yaemmongkol 2 Annotated Bibliography Chang, Esther S., and Ellen Greenberger. Parenting Satisfaction At Midlife Among EuropeanAnd Chinese-American Mothers With A College-Enrolled Child. Asian American Journal of Psychology (2012): PsycINFO. Web. 15 Oct. 2012. This academic journal from the Asian American Journal of Psychology, investigates the ethical differences and similarities of parenting between Chinese-Amercain and European-American. The source does a really good job in pointing out both sides. They talk about the Chinese teaching and expectations along with that of the American or Western parenting. The journal covers the difference of background relaying back to the parenting style. The source contains a current study with all different types of statistics and data. To me this doesnt really help any because I dont know how to read it because I havent taken Statistics. Even though this is so, the source also provides an overview of the study with simpler graphs and charts. There is also a section where it states the limitation of the current study. Both Chang and Greenberger have PhDs in Psychology and are research professors at Soka University of America and University of California at Irvine, respectively. They both have written many research papers and seem to have high credentials among their field of study. This is a good source to me. This basically what my research topic is on. I could use some of the statistics given along with the different ethics provided. I feel like this source is well balanced. Chua, Amy. "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior." The Wall Street Journal. Dow Jones & Company, Inc, 8 Jan. 2011. Web. 15 Oct. 2012. This article is written by Amy Chua, the known tiger mom. This article talked about how Chinese parents understand and feel what is best for their children. Majority of the

Yaemmongkol 3 article is about how Chinese parenting is better and what western teaching doesnt show. This source is highly on sided and not much good reference to Western parenting at all. The source also contains some personal stories that helped described the reason for parenting her daughters the way she does. The source is written from a Yale professor, who went under fire for book The Battle of the Hymn. The source overall is too reliable because of the biasness. I would use this source as a general overview of the way Chinese parents expectations. Theres a personal background so it shows, why. Using the article for other reason may be unreasonable with this particular piece. Huntsinger. C.S, and PE Jose. Relations Among Parental Acceptance and Control and Childrens Social Adjustment in Chinese American and European American Families. Journal of Family Psychology 23.3(n.d): 321-330. Social Sciences Citation Index. Web. 15 Oct. 2012. In this academic journal, parental control is defined based on culture background. With that the author then begins to go through all the different sterotype of Chinese Americans. The source also compares the different parenting between Chinese Americans and European Americans. It goes into specific differences and how each difference is viewed from the other culture. An experiment is shown in the source too with data, charts, and graph that are very useful in understanding how the two parenting styles differ. This is a credible source, the authors are professors of Psychology. I felt as though this source wasnt as balanced as it should be. It focused a lot more on Chinese Americans and not too much on the European American. Although it did list some Euro-American appeals, I felt like it could have added a little more to equalize between the two styles. This source listed some facts that I didnt know before that I could definitely use in my paper. It gives

Yaemmongkol 4 me both sides of the argument so it would help me get enough information on both parenting styles, so it is not heavy on one side. Korte, Travis. "'Tiger Mom' Kids Shown Vulnerable To Depression, Low Self-Esteem." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 20 Jan. 2012. Web. 14 Oct. 2012. This source is an article off of an online science newspaper. The article is about the negative effects of tiger mom. It states that tiger mom kids are more vulnerable to depression and low self-esteem. It also says that most kids have family conflicts in the areas of education and grades. Chinese-American parents are very strict when it comes to academics and that it is a daily conversation topic. The author is a senior writer for LiveScience. She has a B.A. in psychology but does not specialize. The whole article is a reference to a professor at Michigan State University. At the beginning the article was biased. She talked about it causing depression and low self-esteem and there was no reference to opposing side. Towards the end she mentions finding a middle ground. She states that some high achieving students are stressed and some are perfectly happy. This source was helpful to me in a sense of a short overview. It gave some statistical data but not enough to use in my paper. It helped shaped my argument because it provided a negative effect into tiger moms. I liked this source, but at the same time I feel like it is a little too broad. Im not sure if I will use it in my paper. That depends on if I find another article like this but with more in-depth details.

Overall, I feel as though you met each of the necessary points by summarizing, doing research on the authors, and stating its use to you. I noticed that you used two academic journals and two articles, but did you look and see if there were any documentaries about your topic? I think that may be interesting for further research. I would also suggest doing more research on the western parenting style, as the majority of your sources are in reference to tiger moms or Chinese parenting. It looks as though you have found reputable sources as well. I would also say proofreading one more time would be good just because I noticed a few spelling errors that are easy to fix.
