DearMembers: ThestasatBrainCareCentrehopethatyouhaveasafeandhappyChristmasSeason.TheBCCsta areworkinghardplanningtheClientChristmasPartywiththeleadershipofMadison.Thestaare alsoworkingonaChristmashamperprogrambeingledbyJeanandAshley.Thisprogramisan attempttoinsurethat15oftheneediestofclientscanstillcelebratetheChristmasSeasonandNew Year.Iencourageanyoneinterestedindonatingtothehamperprogramtocontacttheoceor stopbywithyournonperishablefood,giftcards,orcashdonationforour15hampers. ThisDecemberalsobroughttheendoftherstyearoftheImPACTOnlineconcussionprogram leadbyAshleyandCarolyn.ThisprogramwassupportedbytheBlueGooseInternationalthrougha generousdonationof$27,000.00.Thisprogramprovideseducationtoparents,coaches,and athletesaboutrecognizingandsafelymanagingconcussionsinsport.Throughthisprogram,young hockeyplayersaretestedpreseasontoestablishabaselinescoreforcognitionandotherelements. ThispastJune,BrainCareCentrereceiveda$27000.00charitabledonationfromTheHonorableOrderoftheBlueGoose InternationalatourBrainInjuryAwarenessMonthBreakfastinordertosupportaconcussioneducationprogram,which includedbaselinetestingusingImPACT(ImmediatePostConcussionAssessmentandCognitiveTesting)forminor athletes.ImPACTisacomputerizedneurocognitiveassessmenttoolthatassistshealthcareprofessionalsindetermining anathletesabilitytoreturntoplayafteraconcussion(impacttest.com). EdmontonMinorHockeyAssociationwaskeentobeinvolvedinthisprogramandBCCStadeliveredconcussion educationandbaselineteststoeightteamsinthemonthofOctober.NAITAthleticsgenerouslydonatedcomputerlab spaceforthisprojectandwewerealsoabletoincludetheNAITMensandWomenshockeyteamsintheprogram. WrittenByMikeRyan ClientServicesManager,BrainCareCentre BCCsServiceCoordinationteamattendedtheannualAlbertaBrainInjuryInitiative(ABII) ServiceCoordinatorsforumonOct11and12attheMedicineHatLodge.BrainInjuryRelearning Serviceshostedtheevent. Forthoseofyouwhoarenotfamiliarwiththebraininjuryservicedeliveryparadigminthe province,theAlbertaBrainInjuryInitiativesupportsadultswithacquiredbraininjuryto reintegrateintotheircommunities.ABIIisanetworkofprovinciallyfundedService CoordinationorganizationsacrossAlbertathatassistsurvivorsandtheircaregiverstoaccesssupportsfromvarious programsandcommunityresources. Theannualforumaordscoordinatorstheopportunitytonetworkanddiscussrelevantserviceprovisionissuesfroma regionalperspective.Additionally,speakersfromawiderangeofdisciplinesprovideeducationalcontentthatis applicabletobraininjuryservicedelivery.Atthisforum,coordinatorsreceivededucationsessionsonadiversearrayof topics,includingthefollowing:TimeManagement,ProactiveApproachestoRiskAssessment,ConcurrentDisorders (AddictionMentalHealthandBrainInjury)andSmartGoals. AtthisyearsforumourServiceCoordinatorswereveryinterestedinthecontentfromthesessionentitled:Doesthe BrainReGrowafterInjury?ThespeakerforthissessionwasDr.RobSutherlandfromtheCanadianCentrefor BehaviouralNeuroscienceattheUniversityofLethbridge.Dr.Sutherlandspokeabouttheresearchfocusonbrain plasticityandcurrentapplicationsofstudiesonrats,suchasstemcelltherapyandgrowthfactors.Moreover,hestated thatanimalmodels(e.g..rats)needdevelopmentandareveryrelevantinensuinghumantreatments.Amongthekey piecesofinformationthatcamefromhispresentationwasthatbraincapacityismalleableandthatmedicalsedatives mayimpedebraininjuryrecovery.OthernotablendingsincludetheobservationinratsthatNicotinehelpsimprove braintreatmentbutcantbeprescribedtopeopleduetothenegativecardiovascularsideeects.Alsoofnote,studies showthattherearesubstantialdierencesinthestructureofbraincellsbetweenmenandwomen,whichhas implicationsforthedevelopmentofindividualizedtreatmentplans. Ofrelevancetopersonswhohavesueredrepeatedconcussions,Dr.Sutherlandmentionedthatunusualproteins (AmyloidalandTauprotein),whichareinvolvedinMadCowdiseaseforceneighboringbraincellstochangeand crystallize,resultinginpathology. Dr.SutherlandmentionedthatrepairtreatmentsinratstudiesincludeadministrationofNicotineandcaeine,aswellas olfactoryandtactilestimulation,exerciseandcomplexsocialhousing. Withregardtonewdirectionsofresearchandtreatment,DrSutherlandemphasizedtraininginexecutivefunctioning andthattraininginavarietyofways,asopposedtohavingasingularfocus,mayimproveissuesrelatedtoexecutive dysfunction. Sometime aphasia for the listener is an ongoing daily game of charadeswherethegamesimplydoesnteverstopbuteveryone wins. Inherlastchaptershespeaksofthevalueofwritingthebook.It documents the monumental work required by the survivors and caregivers to achieve the best outcome. This book is a practical guide for professional and lay people dealing with stroke. It is a lovestoryaswell.

1.Tellmehowyourstgotinvolvedwith BrainCareCentre. OneofmycolleagueswasontheBoardofoneofBCC's predecessororganizations,EBIRS,andtherewasaneed forsomeonewithanancialbackground.AsaChartered AccountantIhadthetechnicalknowledgetollthe vacantposition,butIalsohaveastrongbeliefthatitis importantforprofessionalstogivebacktotheir communities.Alotofnotforprotorganizationsdont havethefundingtohireprofessionalsandthereforerely ontheexpertiseoftheBoardMembers.AsaCA,thisisa verypracticalwayformetogivebacktothecommunity. 2.Whathassurprisedyoumostaboutworkingwith BrainCareCentre? Thismaysoundlikeastrangeanswer,butIwouldhaveto saytherelevanceoftheorganizationtothecommunity. AsImentionedabove,IjoinedtheBoardtollamore technicalpositionanddidnothaveasignicant backgroundinbraininjury.However,itdidnttakeme longtoseetheimportanceofthisorganizationtothe communityandhowmanypeopleareaectedbybrain injury. 3.Whatdoyouwishotherpeopleknewabout acquiredbraininjury? Iwishpeoplerealizedthesignicantchangesthatcan resultfromanacquiredbraininjuryandthatitisoftennot somethingthatwilljustgoawayorgetbetteronitsown. Thedicultywithacquiredbraininjuryisthattheremay notbeanyvisiblesignsoftheinjuryorvisiblechangesasa resultoftheinjuryandthereforeassumptionsaremadea personisabletofunctioninthesamewaytheydidbefore theinjury.Asthepersonwhoacquiredtheinjury,this approachcanleadtofrustrationandadownwardspiral thatmayresultinoutburstsofanger,lossofajob,mental illness,andstruggleswithaddictions.Forthosewho interactregularlywiththeindividual,thisnonrecognition oftenresultsinunrealisticexpectations.Butthatdoesnot havetobethecase,ourmissionstatementatBCCis empoweringotherstodefylimitationsbecauseweknow withtheappropriatesupportpeoplecanadapttothose changesandleadhealthylives.
4.Tellmeaboutsomeofthepeopleyou'vemetwhile workingontheBrainCareCentreGala? Ihadalotoffunatthegalathisyearandmetsomegreat people.ButIwassurprisedthatevenpeopleattending thegalahadverylimitedornoknowledgeofwhatBCC does.Thisisaremindertomethatalthoughwehave madesignicantstridesinourrstyearandahalf,westill havealotofworktodo. 5.What'syourpersonalphilosophyonwhatshould bedoneaboutconcussions? Thatisaverybroadquestion...concussionscanresult frommanydierentsituations.Ithinkwhatmostpeople thinkofwhentheythinkofconcussionsaresportrelated concussions,somaybethatiswhereIwillfocusmy answer.IamexcitedabouttheImPactlicensesthatBCC hasgiventominorsportsteamsinthecitytohelp measuretheimpactofconcussionssustainedduringtheir sportsseasons.Ithinkwhenitcometoconcussions, knowledgeispowerfulandifwecancontinuetoeducate peopleaboutconcussions,aswellaseducateourselves, wecanbetterlearnhowtopreventconcussionsaswellas treatthosewhohavesustainedconcussions.Onething thatisscaryisthepressurekidsareundertoperformas youngathletesandtherefore,thereisalotofpressureto ignorethesignsofaconcussionortonotgetthe appropriatetreatmentwhenaconcussionhasbeen sustained.Somuchvalueisplacedonsucceedingas athletesandIwonderifakidwouldhaveenoughstrength towalkawayfromasportifthatisthediagnosisthey weregiven.Athleticcareersaregenerallyshortlived, braininjurieswillcontinuelongafter.Atthesametime,I thinkweneedtomaintainsomeformofpracticality; preventionisnotjustaboutstickingahelmetoneverykid assoonastheygetupinthemorningbecausetheymay fallandhittheirhead.Again,Ithinkknowledgeand educationarekey,learningwhensafetyequipmentisa goodsolutionorwhentherealsolutionisachangeis behaviorand/orideals,whichisamuchlongerprocess. theBCCstaandthecaretheygivetotheclients.Tosee stathataresoengagedintheirjobsandpassionate aboutwhattheyaredoing,itisverymotivatingforme.
