Does high self-esteem cause better performance, interpersonal success, happiness, or healthier lifestyles?. Psychological Science in the Public Interest 4 (2003): 139. Print. In this article, researchers have studied self-esteem to evaluate how self-esteem can impact a person socially, and personally. People tend to think that high self-esteem leads to happier people, and better performance. Between the 1970s to present day in the United States, there has been a push for people to have higher self-esteem, so you can grow up to be successful and happy. There have been many books written on how to raise self-esteem, and higher self-esteem leads to better futures, and why high self-esteem is good for you. This article explains that higher self-esteem may not lead to any of these things, but will just lead to narcissism, and narcissists tend to isolate. It also talks about how kids being praised for being mediocre dont see the need to improve, because they already have a high view of themselves. People with lower self-esteem actually want to improve and they get better because they usually have fear of failure. There have also been studies on the correlation of self-esteem between teenagers and drugs and alcohol use. It suggests that high and low self-esteem affect the reasons why teenagers do those illegal things, but has nothing to do with why. Eating disorders are also addressed, and in studies it shows that girls with lower self-esteem have a vulnerability to eating disorders, but it also has to do with perfectionism and feeling over overweight. In conclusion, high self-esteem may prevent bulimia but has nothing to do with alcohol, drugs, or smoking. This is good for my inquiry, Does high-self esteem make you healthy?, because it gives a different perspective on having high self-esteem. It talks about how it might be

Jennifer Matlock Annotated Bibliography D1 unhealthy, and gives examples of how self-esteem doesnt affect people in way that it is suggested. Campbell, Robert, Walter Foddis. Is High Self-Esteem Bad for You?. The Atlas Society July 2003. Web. 25 September 2012. This website addresses self-esteem will rise if you meet certain standards. If someone wants their self-esteem to improve they have to deal with anxiety and accept responsibility, and accept themselves. Having higher self-esteem may lead to narcissism, too much pride and ego. Some people with higher self-esteem seem to be more aggressive when they feel like their sense of self is being threatened. People with higher self-esteem also like the way they look, but feel superior to others. It also says that people barely question whether or not its healthy to have a high self-esteem. This website was good for my inquiry because it challenges what people say about high self-esteem. It says that people with high self-esteem arent always happier, and better off in life. It explains why certain behaviors can be good for your self-esteem without making you a narcissist. Greenstone, Daniel. Aint I Great!: The Problem with Self-Esteem. Horn Book Magazine 01 November 2008: 675-680. Print. This magazine article is about childrens books trying to boost self-esteem in a child. It explains why this may be a problem in the future. These books can imply narcissism and give the message that its okay to be wrong as long as I like myself. It says that bullies have a higher self-esteem than their peers, and that kids with lower self-esteem usually do better in school because they try harder. The problem with the books is that theyre

Jennifer Matlock Annotated Bibliography D1 telling children that they dont talk about external situations, and teach about being wrong its okay to fail, as long as you have self-satisfaction. This was a good article because it talks about how raising self-esteem in children may not be as good as everyone thinks. High self-esteem may only lead to problems, and childrens books that intend to raise a childs self-esteem are not exactly working. It gives a good perspective on how high self-esteem is not always better. It gives me a different view for my inquiry question. Mecca, Andrew, Neil Smelser, John Vasconcellos. The Social Importance of Self- esteem. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1989. Print Low self- esteem is an issue that needs to be brought to attention for the sake of a better society. Raising self-esteem brings you a better life, but will also lessen the amount of illegal activity. Instead of spending billions of dollars and sending people to jail, build institutions to help people change how they feel about themselves. Low self-esteem can lead to social problems, like teenage pregnancy, dropping out of school, and illegal activities. Having a high self-esteem does not have to mean youre narcissistic, but it means you appreciate yourself and dont want to be a pushover. Teaching kids high selfesteem can lead to successful lives, and the kids will stay away from deviant behavior. Low self-esteem may lead to: failure in school because of the fear of disappointment, teen pregnancy because the girl might feel like there is nothing to lose, crime and violence because self-esteem is closely related to emotion (shame and pride), and chronic welfare dependency because there is a sense of powerlessness. Drug and alcohol abuse may not be caused by low self-esteem but low self-esteem can be a key factor into abusing drugs and alcohol.

Jennifer Matlock Annotated Bibliography D1 This book helps because it explains why high self-esteem is good socially, and how self-esteem can affect a lot of social factors in life. It explains why it is healthy, which is what my inquiry is.

Mruk, Christopher. Self-esteem 2nd edition: Research, Theory, and Practice. New York City: Springer Publishing Company, 1999. Print. Self-esteem: Research, Theory and Practice go in depth to what self-esteem actually means. Self-esteem is actually 4 separate categories: high, medium, low, and defensive. Self-esteem can be defined in many ways, but it comes down to how you see yourself with what you have and dont have. The higher the self-esteem the less fear of failure someone will have. People with low self-esteem need to learn to conserve it. The scale set up for the four categories is measure by worthiness and competence. Within the four categories, self-esteem is broken up into different sub-categories. For example, low self-esteem is divided into negativistic and depressive categories, and defensive is divided into self-centered, narcissistic, over achieving and antisocial categories. This is important because it goes into detail how self-esteem works in four different ways. It provides charts of the self-esteem scale and gives me a good explanation on how these things are divided. The categories help me understand the difference between different types of self-esteem a person may have.

Jennifer Matlock Annotated Bibliography D1 Zimmerman, Marc. Laurel Copeland, Jean Shope, T. E. Dielman. A Longitudinal Study of Self-Esteem: Implications for Adolescent Development. Journal of Youth and Adolescence Vol 26. 2 (1997): 117-141. Web. 25 September 2012. This article studies how self-esteem can affect adolescents, and examines studies of peer pressure, grades, and alcohol use among teenagers. The concept is that kids with higher self-esteem dont give into peer pressure as easily, get better grades, and dont misuse alcohol as much. It states that self-esteem is hard to measure, and that there are different results between males and females. Females with higher self-esteem tend to use alcohol more than lower self-esteem girls, but with men its almost opposite. The flaw is that the data was only a self-report, and not 100% agreed to do it, so its not a good measurement for the adolescents studied. This was a good article because it gives actual studies. There are charts and graphs to point out what these people were talking about. They also talked about the things people associate with self-esteem like teenagers, peer pressure, and deviance in teenagers. It could help me with my inquiry to reference the studies they did.
