P reamble

Mankind will soon be facing the greatest challenge to feed the increased world population. Depleting inputs in agriculture such as water, land and quality seeds along with the need to cut down on chemicals for plant production and protection will cause great stress on our food production systems. Unprecedented population growth and poverty in most developing countries will result in insufficient food supplies to more than half of the world population. India is in a much better situation than most countries in the world in terms of agricultural production. We stand first or second in the production of most crops in the world. Abundant sunlight, sufficient rainfall, perennial rivers, varied agroclimatic zones, warm and long marine landings, and fertile soils have helped India reach self sufficiency from gross insufficiencies at the time of Independence and till the onset of the first green revolution in the early seventies.

Though we are self sufficient food supplies, the availability of foods for most people, particularly the economically weaker sections, is far from sufficient. This is due to poor post harvest management. Distribution to remote markets requires increased shelf life of the perishable produce. Non-availability of suitable post harvest processing, preservation and value addition technologies result in great losses in the post harvest system causing poor food distribution to most people in India. Food Security for India's weaker sections means effectively saving and managing the foods and making them available in remote domestic markets. This will not only make more foods available for domestic consumption, but will also help us to increase our export potential. The economic status of producers will also improve resulting in an inclusive growth. We need newer technologies suitable to India's conditions and newer ventures in food industries to process; preserve and value add India specific crops. Creating awareness amongst stake holders on the values of food processing businesses, the values and qualities of available technologies, and the newer developments in technologies for processing, preservation and value addition of foods are essential for effectively managing our foods and for reducing post harvest losses.

conference objectives
The 3rd INCOFTECH 2013 has multifold objectives:
n Creating a confluence of contemporary

leaders of science in food processing sector from within India and around the world for discussions on the current focus and future directions of food processing research, industries and education.
n Sharing the research results amongst peers

in science and the stake holders in the food industry.

n Highlighting the available energy and

labour saving technologies for processing, preserving and value adding to foods.
n Creating awareness among new and

experienced entrepreneurs and other stake holders on the values of venturing in new food processing businesses.

Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) is a world class Educational and Research Institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India. The Institute is located in a panoramic campus on the outskirts of Thanjavur, India. The institute has state-of-the-art and hi-tech research and teaching laboratories, and a food processing business incubation centre. Conducting basic and applied R&D in post harvest processing, preservation and value addition of food crops; creating manpower for food processing sector by offering Bachelors, Masters and doctoral degrees in food process engineering and through short term training and non-formal courses in food processing technologies; conducting outreach programs across the country to popularize food processing technologies; offering consultancies for creation of new food industries or food testing laboratories; and information generation and flow on food processing technologies and to create linkages with related industries, academia and R&D Institutions across the country and around the world are the major activities of IICPT. The Institute has strong tie-ups with many national and international research and academic institutions.

Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India is the nodal agency of the Central Government responsible for developing a strong and vibrant food processing sector, with a view to creating job opportunities in rural areas, enabling the farmers to reap benefit from modern technologies, creating surplus for exports and stimulating demand for processed foods. The Ministry acts as a catalyst and facilitator for attracting domestic and foreign investments towards developing large integrated processing capacities by creating conducive policy environment, including rationalization of taxes and duties.

Submission of papers for

Presentations

Please submit abstracts of original research findings for oral presentations. The abstract should be of not more than 300 words in Times New Roman with font size 12 points and 1.5 line spacing. The abstracts should be submitted before October 31, 2012. Both hard and soft copies of abstracts should be submitted along with conference registration fee. Soft copies must be send to incoftech-2013@iicpt.edu.in A peer review committee will screen these abstracts based on originality of research, relevance to the conference, the quality of work and will notify the corresponding author of the outcome. Authors of successful papers will be required to submit a 7 to 10 page long research article for inclusion in an edited book that will be published as part of the conference. The article should be typed in Times New Roman with font size 12 points and 1.5 line spacing. Due to space and time limitations, it may not be possible to include all the papers for oral presentations. However, if requested and deemed fit, the unsuccessful papers from oral session can be included in the poster presentations and will be published in the conference souvenir.

Please submit abstracts of research findings, review articles, or concept notes on any of the thematic areas in general. The abstract should be of not more than 300 words in Times New Roman with font size 12 points and 1.5 line spacing. These abstracts will be reviewed by a peer review committee and will be accepted based on the quality. All accepted abstracts will appear in the conferences souvenir. All abstracts, including those with request for oral presentations and those for poster presentations should be submitted only with the requisite conference registration fee. At least one author should pay the registration fee. If more than one author is in a paper, each author should submit the registration fee, if she/he wishes to participate in the conference. No paper will be considered without appropriate registration fee. Only registered participants who attend the conference will receive the participation certificate.
