14 KILLED IN PATNA BRIDGE COLLAPSE

Patna: Fourteen persons, most of them women and children, were killed on Monday and many others injured when a makeshift bridge caved in triggering a stampede during chhat puja celebrations at the Adalatganj ghat on the bank of River Ganga, police said. Fear-stricken people trampled on each other after the bridge collapsed at around 7 pm, they said, adding that the toll may rise as the condition of some of the injured is said to be critical. Trinamul supremo Mamata Banerjees decision to move a no-confidence motion against the Manmohan Singh government in the Winter Session of Parliament seems to have found few takers in the Opposition at this juncture. While the Trinamul chief has appealed to all Opposition parties, including the Left and the BJP, to support her no-trust motion, there has not been any positive response yet. The BJP fears that such a motion would compel the Samajwadi Party and the BSP to support the government. The Left indicated it would prefer a debate and vote, rather than support the no-trust move. But the fate of the Trinamuls proposed motion depends on what stand the BJP, which will meet here on Tuesday, takes. DONT LEND TO BUY GOLD: RBI TO BANKS

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India on Monday directed banks not to give loans for the purchase of gold in any form, including primary gold, bullion and jewellery, to dissuade people from indulging in speculative activity. It is advised that no advances be granted by banks for purchase of gold in any form, including primary gold, gold bullion, gold jewellery, units of Gold Exchange Traded Funds and units of gold mutual funds, RBI said in a notification. The Supreme Court on Monday reprimanded the Centre for its very casual attitude in handling a case concerning the re-allotment of the 122 licenses to operate 2G spectrum cancelled earlier by the apex court. The court directed the Centre to file a fresh affidavit within two days explaining why the entire 2G spectrum, licenses for which were cancelled in February, was not put on auction on November 12. At no point of time was this court informed that the auction will be held only for 800 MHz and 1800 MHz and not for 900 MHz. Its unfair on the part of any (government) officer to not inform the court about any facts, the court said. A bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and K.S. The government on Monday transferred ACB director B. Shivadhar Reddy and posted him as Visakhapatnam commissioner of police, in a massive exercise that covered 45 police officers. The transfers covered DCPs in the city, and SPs in the districts. Mr Shivadhar Reddys place will be taken by Mr Kumar Vishwajeet. ACB additional DG D. A letter seeking the removal of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy for allegedly being ineffective and PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana for reportedly running a liquor and mining mafia has created a furore. The letter, allegedly written by Union tribal welfare minister Kishore Chandra Deo to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, was published in a Delhibased newspaper on Monday. Terming the issue as a conspiracy to malign him, Mr Satyanarayana has threatened to sue the daily. Mr Deo said that he had not written any such letter in the last four months but indicated that he would write to the Congress president regarding the state of affairs of the party. AICC spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit said on Monday evening that the party was not thinking about a change of leadership in the state. GHMC gets 6 weeks to clean up

The AP High Court on Monday gave six weeks to the GHMC to control the mosquito menace and maintain hygiene in the city. A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Vilas V. Afzulpurkar was dealing with a plea by advocate Wasim Ahmad Khan, who had complained that no action had been taken to clear filth that helped in breeding mosquitoes.

GHMC counsel explained the steps that were being taken to control mosquitoes. Appearing for the petitioner, Mr Mohd Moinuddin submitted that the GHMC itself had admitted that about 45 portable fogging machines and 247 knapsack sprayers were not functioning. He submitted

a copy of a report obtained from the GHMC through the RTI with regard to steps taken by the corporation and the position of the equipment available with it to control mosquitoes in the city. He also submitted photographs showing overflowing sewerage drains and open nalas. Reacting to the submissions, the Bench directed the GHMC to ensure steps to control the mosquito problem within six weeks and report compliance to the court.
