Standards: W.7.1.

c: Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among claim(s), reasons, and evidence. W.7.3.c: Use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to convey sequence and signal shifts from one time frame or setting to another. ISTE 6: Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. Lesson Objective(s): Students will demonstrate understanding of the different sentence types presented to them: simple, compound, complex, and compound/complex. Students will work together and discuss the sentence types. Students will work individually to complete a mini-game about sentence types on their computers. Students will display an understanding of the technology they are being asked to use to complete the mini-game. Introduce the Learning Activity:

This is meant to be a review activity. I will tell the students about the review, and show the Prezi. Afterwards, I plan on allowing students to work together during the flash card game, while working independently on the online game. I will tell students the reason this activity is being introduced is because when they start writing papers, I expect to see all of these types of sentences in their papers. Provide Information: I will show a Prezi that reviews the four common sentence types: simple, compound, complex, and compound/complex. The review will go over each sentences types characteristics, and provide a brief example of each. I will also answer any questions before the flashcard game. After the brief game, I will instruct students to go to the online game and complete it. Provide Practice: Each student will be given four index cards that either identify a type of sentence, or has an example of a type of sentence. Students will then give away the examples of sentences other students have the identifier cards for, while collecting the example sentences they have identifier cards for. After I review the cards, students will then go to the website I provide for them, and play the interactive game on my website. This game is much like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Students will complete the game, or play until time is up.

Provide Knowledge of Results:

1. I will encourage students to continue working hard if they are succeeding, and help them along if they are on their way to the goal. 2. Each student will receive a participation credit for this class period. This will be shown on each classroom quarterly report card I produce for the students. Review the Activity: Students will demonstrate their understanding of sentence types and structures in their future writing assignments. I do not expect every student to completely understand the concepts immediately, but throughout the year, their understanding should evolve. Method of Assessment: 1. I will observe the students as they interact with each other during the flashcard game. Their conversation will help me determine if they have sufficient understanding of the subject at hand. Participation will be a pass/fail grade. Students participation in the online activity will also be graded on a pass/fail basis.
