PUZZLING
In an hour
You will have investigated patterns of multiplication fact families and extracted or pulled out a rule for solving those problems. You will have applied this rule and have used it to solve a real-world puzzle.

PUZZLING

PUZZLING
During this past week
we have been trying to understand the reasons behind what we are doing when we are multiplying. Math isnt just random. It is full of predictable patterns. When we understand these patterns we can understand and learn to solve more in-depth and more challenging puzzles.

WHY?
Importance Outside of School

IOS
Not getting ripped off at a garage sale. Keeping score in a basketball game. Ordering pizzas for a party.

Today
1. Review the patterns for x 2, x 3, x 4 with whiteboards
WHY?

Going back and reviewing what we already know helps us to warm-up our brains with the material and gets everyone on the same page.

2. Class Discussion
WHY?

Discussing helps us learn and understand by building off others ideas giving us new perspectives we couldnt come up with on our own.

3. Look at the patterns for x 5, x 6 work time

WHY?

Finding patterns in math helps us make connections. When we make connections we can recall the information faster and more accurately.

4. Exit Pass
WHY?

Having to complete a task at the end of a lesson helps you summarize what you learned and reflect on whether you understood it or not.

CLASS DISCUSSION

This afternoon Movie and Popcorn

Attwood Tiger Celebration

Have you ever wondered how popcorn is made?

I was helping to pop the popcorn this morning before school. I have never used the big popcorn machine before and

I burned some of the popcorn.

There is nothing worse than the smell/taste of burnt popcorn.

The burnt popcorn got mixed in with the good popcorn. I need your help to get the burnt popcorn out.

In the first batch I burned, 1 bag of popcorn has 5 kernels that are burnt.
How many total burnt kernels are there in 8 bags?

Dont blurt out the answer.

Solve it and write your answer in your math journal.

Solve it and write your answer in your math journal.

5 x 8 = 40

How do you know?

What is the reason behind this?

5 x 8 = 40

The Rule the number x 10 and then take away half
