SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES MEng in Civil Engineering Part 4 STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS COURSEWORK Your design team has been retained to provide the detailed design for a theatre and conference auditorium as per Figure 1. The basic structural form consists of a 30m span steel portal frame sitting atop an existing excavation with the enclosed space forming the auditorium with the stage area to the front. Behind the stage is Back of House used to support on-stage activities; above the stage and Back of House is to be a two storey office space. Towards the rear is a pedestrian bridge that crosses at ground level that forms the access to the upper circle seating, itself sat atop steel trusses. A projection room is housed at the very rear of this upper balcony structure. The work is packaged to conduct individually with each member of the team responsible for a particular aspect of design. The structural form has already been determined and you are to provide the detailed design in accordance with the requirements as set out below. As well as the individual tasks, each person is to write a 1 page descriptive summary of their work that will be used as a tool to remind yourselves of the design approach as well as inform your colleagues of the same (think of it as something that will help during examination revision).

TASK A PORTAL FRAME The following figure shows a column in the steel portal frame. For the coursework, you are to carry out the design the column and the connection between the rafter and the column. The design is to be in accordance with Eurocode 3 for steel structures. The height of the column should be calculated using your date of birth (dd/mm/yy) in accordance with the formula: height = (dd+mm+yy)*40 mm, rounded to the nearest 100mm. Use steel to Grade 50. Adjacent frames are spaced at 4500mm. The frame is liable to sway in its plane. Assume that the effective length for buckling in this (x-z) plane is 2.5 times the height of the column. The frame is adequately braced against translation in the other (x-y) plane at the three points as shown. The design loading on the column is indicated through the bending moment and axial force diagrams (values shown are in units of kNm and kN, respectively).

Submit the (hand written) calculations and a neat fabrication drawing of the sub-frame shown. purposes, assume that the rafter is of the same cross section as the column at their junction.

TASK B BALCONY ACCESS PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE The pedestrian access to the upper circle is via a 30m span composite bridge, simply supported at its two ends. Due to line-of-sight limitations there is a 1m deep space for the structure, although any depth less than this can be used if it leads to a more efficient design. Due to construction and transportation limitations, the bridge is to be designed in three 10m long sections with a bolted connection between adjacent elements. The width of the bridge should be calculated using your date of birth (dd/mm/yy) in accordance with the formula: width = (dd+mm+yy)/35 mm, rounded to the nearest 50mm. Use steel to Grade 50. Use standard hot rolled steel sections for the steel elements. Include web bearing and buckling stiffeners as appropriate. Design the shear connectors. Design the bolted connection. Determine loading in accordance with EC1 crowded space requirements. Ensure that the natural frequency is above 5Hz using simple design guidance (<10mm) There is no need to consider any bridge-specific design code requirements.

Submit the (hand written) calculations and a neat fabrication drawing of the bridge.

TASK C OFFICE COMPOSITE SLAB AND COLUMN The office space is designed as a composite frame consisting of composite beam, slab and columns although you only need to design the composite slab and column. The height of the column and span of the slab should be calculated using your date of birth (dd/mm/yy) in accordance with the formula: height = (dd+mm+yy)*80 mm, rounded to the nearest 100mm. span = (dd+mm+yy)*48 mm, rounded to the nearest 100mm. Use steel to Grade 50. Use decking profiles provided by TATA steel (calculations must be submitted to verify any tabular data used) Designs should be conducted for the construction stage as well as ULS and SLS requirements of the completed slab. Detailed design of the slab should consider end anchorages for the slab. Column design should be based on a circular hollow section, being as slender as possible, and assumed to be pinned at both ends.

Submit the (hand written) calculations and a neat fabrication drawing of the structural elements.
