Load Indicator FH/FM Version 2

Indicates axle weight, load weight, and overall weight for the truck and trailers Measuring accuracy +/ 150 kg per axle The calculated weights are displayed in the instrument panel Clear symbols indicate which weight is being displayed Suits vehicles with air suspension Adapted for Dynafleet

The Volvo load indicator system is an electronic/pneumatic system for measuring axle load and carried load. It is designed for trucks and trailers with air and leaf spring suspensions. It measures axle weight, load weight, and gross vehicle weight for the vehicle and trailers. This is achieved by a pressure sensor connected to the air bellows on the truck/trailer. Results are clearly shown digitally on a display. The figures presented in the display are very reliable and provide a good indication of any possible overloads. Reliability is important considering the fact that an overload could be hazardous in traffic, and could also result in fines. The measurements have shown an accuracy of +/ 150 kg per axle when calibration has been performed correctly. Calibration In order to maintain reliability in the system, the readings displayed should be checked on a regular basis. A new calibration should be performed when necessary. Reference values both with and without loads for vehicle combinations are measured on a scale and recorded, and are transmitted to the control module using Volvos aftermarket tool. Number of sensors Varying numbers of sensors are necessary, depending on the type of trailer to be connected to the vehicle. The following can be taken as a general rule: Normally it is sufficient with one sensor per axle combination, front and rear. If the compressed-air system for a single axle combination is divided left and right, two sensors will be required, one for each side. If the axle combination consists of a bogie or several axles but with interconnected compressed-air system, one sensor will be enough. If the system is divided right and left, each side will need one sensor apiece.

A maximum of 4 pressure sensors can be connected to the control module. To sum. up: For maximum accuracy one sensor per air spring circuit. Note that these four vehicle combinations show only in principle what the system can measure. Quite often there is no problem if the vehicle has a double or triple axle. In most cases the air system is connected up. when several axles are installed, that is, the air bellows on the various axles and inter-linked and have the same pressure. It is enough, therefore, to connect a pressure sensor to ny of the bellows in order to measure the axle load for the vehicle combination in question. Functions The control unit for the system has the same housing dimensions as a Volvo radio and can be installed in the same way inside the cab. Simply pressing the appropriate button digitally registers the load on a display. Data Communications Load indicator communicates with other electronic systems as per SAE J1708 and SAE J1587.

Electronic Controlled Suspension, added functions

22

Easy access on the dashboard Adapt your vehicle to type of operation Possible to change the specification of functions Gives the driver a better working condition Save fuel by changing the driving height

These new functionalitys gives the driver the option to access control functions for the air suspension with programmable switches on the dashboard instead of having to combine a lot of actions on the normal air suspension controlbox. For each vehicle two options can be selected to suit the driving conditions of the truck.

Added functions

No 1. Inhibit regulation The ECS system prevents all valve regulation on height and axelload. Can be useful on vehicles equipped with a snowplough to prevent the change in driving height.

No 2. Kneeling front axle by pulling the handbrake When this function is activated the vehicle will kneel on the front axle by pulling the handbrake. The kneel height can be set by the tool VCADS-Pro. For distribution and garbage trucks this function gives the driver a better working environment as he gets a lower instep into the cab. This function can only be activated if functions 3, 5 and 6 are not activated and the vehicle speed is below <30km/h.

No 3. Kneeling the front axle

23

Same function as No 2 but the kneeling is only activated by using the switch and not the handbrake. This function can only be activated if functions 2, 5 and 6 are not activated.

No 4. Change driving level The function changes the driving height of the vehicle. The height is set by the tool VCADS-Pro within the Limits of the vehicle specification. The function can be used to get a lower driving height on highways in order to save fuel.

No 5. Loadheight M1 When the switch is activated the vehicle will get the loadheight M1, without using the controlbox for the air suspension. The vehicle must be equipped with a controlbox with possibility to set driving height M1 to use this function. The function can be activated both when the controlbox is in position MAN1 or AUTO. This function can only be activated if functions 2, 3 and 6 are not activated.

No 6. Loadheight M2 Same function as No 5 but can only be used on full air suspension trucks, equipped with a controlbox with possibility to set driving height M2. This function can only be activated if functions 2, 3 and 5 are not activated.

No 7. Ferry level The function drains the air-bellows by activating the switch instead of using the controlbox for the air suspension. This is a useful functions for drivers who needs to use this functions frequently. Vehicle speed must be <30km/h to activate this function.

No 8. Alternative load distribution When this function is activated the normal loadistribution is changed and a new load distrbution can be decided by the customer and program with the tool VCADS-Pro within the limits of the vehicle. The functions is deactivated above a certain vehicle speed.

No 11. Boggie lift +30%

With added function 11, the axle load is permitted to increase by 30% when the trailing axle is lifted, if the speed <30 km/h. This applies only to RALIM variants: RALIM115, RALIM105 and RALIM95. The function is activated when the bogie switch is in position 1. If the speed exceeds 30 km/h, the trailing axle will be lowered automatically, if the drive axle is overloaded. If the vehicle is equipped with FALIM (limitation of front axle load), the trailing axle will be lowered if the permitted front axle load is exceeded. If the function is deactivated due to speed >30 km/h or if the drive axle load increases to more than 30% overload, the bogie switch must be activated again if the function Bogie lift +30% is required.

24

Below listed functions can be combined according to the table. Electronic Brake System

EBS-STD to EBS-MED
It is possible to upgrade vehicles with EBS-GEN3 and EBS-STD to EBS-MED. EBS-MED offers the following additional features.

Hill start assist

Hill start assist helps the driver to start in uphill sections. By activating the function, the brakes are not immediately released and the driver has extra time to accelerate. The function is deactivated when the switch is pressed in a second time. Hill start assist functions in different ways dependent on the gearbox: Manual gearbox: The brake pressure is maintained until the clutch pedal is released or until a specific engine torque is achieved. Automatic gearbox: The brake pressure is maintained constant for a specific time period after the brake pedal is released or until a specific engine torque is achieved.

Throttle release torque control

Throttle release torque control can prevent the driving wheels locking on slippery roads when the accelerator is released. If the wheels begin to lock, the auxiliary brake will be shut off and the driving wheels obtain a rotational speed which is equivalent to the vehicles speed. The wheels will then regain grip with the road. The function automatically re-engages, if the vehicles speed >10 kph. When the vehicle is disengaged or ABS is active on the front axle, the function is automatically disengaged.

Automatic differential lock (42/62/82)

Automatic differential lock (DLC, Diff Lock Control) is only available on vehicles with one drive axle. Differential lock is activated automatically when the driving wheels begin to rotate with different speeds. Before the function is engaged, the wheel speeds are synchronised. Automatic differential lock functions only at speeds <15 kph and automatically disengages if the speed exceeds 15 kph.

Installation
To install EBS-MED the needed hardware must be installed. Run the conversion kit in VCADS-Pro and reprogram the EBS control unit MID 136. Only the conversion kit will be invoiced.

Digital Tachograph

Easy to printout reports Possible to monitor the drivers activity more easy Accurate measurement Easy to store the data for fleet owners Possible to check the drivers activities without having access to the diagram sheets

All new vehicles within the EU which are required to have tachographs must be fitted with digital tachographs from 1st May 2006. It is also possible to change to a digital tachograph for other reasons, for instance in order to utilize its product properties since it gives quite a few advantages over the analogue. For trucks built 1992-2002 a retrofit kit is available for trucks with the old analogue tachograph mounted in the dashboard. To obtain order numbers for a driver manual for the digital tachograph, please look in the linked PDF document DTCO, page 4. (This is a Technical Parts Information (TPI 383004), otherwise connected to Impact.) The new digital tachograph vehicle unit includes a processor, a data memory, a real time clock, two smart card interfaces, a printer, a display, a visual warning, a calibration/downloading connector, connectors for the vehicle interface and facilities for entry of users input. Via the printer both the driver and the authorities can make print outs from the tachograph. Fleet owners have the responsibility to store the digital information, sampled by the tachograph, according to the EC legislation. The tachograph will fit in an ISO 7736 format radio slot. The dimensions are similar to but not identical with the mechanical tachograph installed today. The same connectors and pin out as in todays tachograph will be used.

Advanced Trailer Detection (ATD)

36

With this feature it will be possible to manually deactivate or activate trailer detection via the instrument cluster. Deactivation ensures trailer lights in those cases where unknown lamps are fitted on the trailer. When TD-BAS/TD-LED detection is deactivated it gives the functionality like sales variant UTDS, see below.

No trailer detection function I-shift and ESP will miss full functionality and work in a "failsafe" mode, e.g. I-shift will select lowest start gear and ESP operates with reduced trailer brake. No secondary indicator when trailer is connected (legal demand).

Customer benefits: Possible to manually deactivate trailer detection if necessary in order to have trailer light functionality. No broken bulb diagnoses (trailer light outputs are always enabled). Always possible to get the trailer light working regardless of bulbs/LEDs.

There are accessory kits available for LCM, SLCM and SLCM08. Available for sales variants TD-BAS and TD-LED. Emission Level upgrades

Euro4 to Euro5
Volvo offers emission level upgrades since many years, for example from Euro1 to Euro2, Eco5 to Euro3 and from Euro2 to Euro3, and now also from Euro4 to Euro5 incentive. The benefits for the customers and the community are well known. On one hand there are economical advantages for the truck owners who get grants from their government for investing in upgrades with less pollution, and also gives less road tolls and lower taxes. On the other hand it results in environmental advantages with better air quality which is important for us all. For the retrofit kit from Euro4 to Euro5i for FH and FM the muffler needs to be replaced and software downloaded. Every upgrade will be given an Emission Level Upgrade Certificate which is valid for homologation.

Driver Alert Support, FH

40

Driver Alert Support (DAS) is a safety system that works with accident prevention. The target is to prevent accidents due to too tired drivers or drivers that fall asleep. For trucks equipped with Lane Keeping Support there is a software accessory available which adds on the functionality of warning the driver if degraded behaviour occurs, both with an acoustic warning and a warning in the Driver Information Display (DID). The Driver Alert Support monitors the driving behaviour and the position of the truck in comparison to the lane and road edges. The system detects driving characteristics of drowsy or inattentive drivers and encourages the driver to take break. If a degraded driving behaviour is recognized, the system will warn the driver, with both an acoustic warning and a warning in the DID. First warning is an alert, second warning a suggestion to take a break. When the acoustic warning is activated the radio will automatically be muted.

1st warning - When attention becomes low, the message Driver Alert Focus on driving will be displayed together with an audible warning (simultaneously the Audio system will be muted). 2nd warning - When attention becomes critically low, the message Driver Alert Time for a break will be displayed, together with a different audible warning (simultaneously the Audio system will be muted). With the 2nd level warning, the Cruise Control (CC) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) will be deactivated unless these functions at the time of the warning are requesting retardation of the vehicle.

41

The system is possible to deactivate through the safety menu in the DID. If deactivated a warning is showed in the DID that the system is Off. The system will automatically be activated when ignition is turned on. If the LSS-DW (Lane Keeping Support) cant find any reference (lane or road edges) or if the speed is below 65 Km/h the DAS will be deactivated and a warning is showed in the DID. Customer benefits:

The Driver Alert Support system will improve active safety, by reducing risk for accidents caused by limited driver attention. Will reduce number of accidents, and thereby increase up-time. Easy to install, software only.
