Ask students what methods they use to sound out a word they do not know. As the students give responses, teacher will write the methods on the board. Students should mention the following: look for smaller words in the word, use letter sounds, and use syllable patterns. The teacher will add these methods to the board and briefly explain if the students do not. 2. Explain to the students that all of these methods are considered reading strategies and that these strategies will help them figure out how to read long words. 3. Display Transparency 21 and read the introduction and text in the box out loud to the students. 4. Model the title of the passage Snowstorm Alert to show the students how to break down the word Snowstorm. 5. Ask the students to read the remaining passage silently and to think about the underlined words. 6. Ask for a volunteer to decode the first underlined word. If the student struggles, ask the class for assistance. If the class still struggles, reteach by modeling using transparency 21. 7. Go through each underlined word on the transparency as a class. 8. Students will pair up and read the first two chapters of Nate the Great: San Francisco Detective. Tell the students to write down the words they do not know as they read and to draw a star next to each word they are able figure out. Students are encouraged to help one another when decoding a new word. Students will also write out how they figured out the word for a minimum of 5 words.
