within the engineering community. Their primary focus is to find efficient and environmentally friendly ways to improve everyday materials. Think of the soap in your house, the gasoline you pump into your car, or even the complex whey protein powder Uncle John takes for body building, chemical engineers cover a variety of aspects in todays society. While analyzing the discourse community of chemical engineering, it is not difficult to notice the high-level formal diction and lexis the writer utililizes and similar syntax throughout each journal. Furthermore, there are graphs and tables that represent the content that the writer is speaking of. The journals are mainly organized by a title, an introduction, experiments that have to due with the main focus of the journal, charts and tables that support the claims, a conclusion, and finally a resource cited page. The primary focus of the genre is finding an efficient way to use renewable resources and replace non-renewable materials or materials that take a long time to biodegrade. Due to the high priority of polymers, which create pollution, chemical engineers around the world are trying to find a way to process soy as a substitute due to the fact it is lighter and causes less polution. Additionally, there has been use of soybean meal in previous projects, such as one of Ford Motor Company's use in vehicle applications [Time, 25 August 1941,p. 63.] The writer uses pathos to support the claim; if the audience feels emotionally comforted by the fact that soy has been used in the past, they will be more inclined to it being used in the future. Chemical engineering is a provincial aspect of the engineering field, there are roughly eleven

Dipsiner2 major branches of engineering and chemical is a more specialized major that can be applied to all. Polymers create a huge amount of pollution annually and their needs to be a way to recreate the same purpose with a different outcome. Thus, chemical engineers find a way to refine materials and recreate them into use for individuals. The writer uses logos, it is logical that if plastics are a major pollutant and take long to biodegrade, that their should be a focus to use a different material that can do the same thing as plastics. The author also uses ethos by citing a member of the American Chemical Society to support the prior dispute that it is necessary to find a substition of polymers. By evaluating the pros and cons of soy plastics to recreate the functions that polymers provide in daily life, the writer repeatedly provides informaton of how it has similar qualities to polymer without as much negative outcomes. For instance, food trays, spoons, and plastic bags are all examples of soy plastics that are used today due to their biodegradability. The writer uses ethos to support the claim, there are eight sources writing about environmental polymer degradabilty that approve of using soy plastics as a replacement material to the previous polymer plastics. While reading these journals one may come to the harsh conclusion that they simply do not understand what they are reading. That's perfectly normal, a custodian isn't expected to know the molecular structure of salasytic acid and how it can be applied to the face in a manner that doesn't irritate it, unless they have a strange hobby or was previously laid off from an engineering firm . The lexis and community that chemical engineers write to are other chemical engineers. The reason being is because in chemical bonds the smallest particle difference changes the entire molecular structure and bond of that agent. If the audience doesn't have prior knowledge of chemistry or any scientific knowledge retaining to engineering they most likely will not comprehend what they are reading. Chemical engineering is a sophisticated discourse community and within this particular community the genre deals with empirical data and scientific lexis, tables and charts that illustrate the idea of the topic at hand, and a chronological format that flows with the context.
