Abaci, Peter. NFL Head Injuries: Creating Recovery with Lessons from the Battlefield. The Huffington Post, 6 (June 2012). Web. 18 Sept. 2012. This particular article is written from a neutral doctors point of view concerning TBI or Traumatic Brain Injuries. It gives instances where the NFL is similar to the military in their head injuries and should learn from them. It talks about ways to heal TBI and PTSD through various forms of therapy, the most common being art therapy. It mentions the link from TBI to major depression, anxiety, social dysfunction, headaches, and violence such as physical abuse. This article is very well written because it does not blame the injuries on anyone it just talks about the causes and effects and what needs to improve on both sides to make the game safer for everyone and how to apply it to other situations. Overall this is a useful point of view into this academic conversation and would be a good starting point for any opening paragraph. Olson, David. Head Injury. Medsacpe Reference, 5 (September 2012). Web. 20 Sept. 2012 Research on head injuries has advanced considerably in the past decade. This has gone on to show the complexity of the condition through more extensive research, and has helped to mostly abandon crude simplifications. This article basically talks about the specifics of what happens in a head injury, it remains completely neutral because not once in its contents does it mention the NFL or lawsuits. This article is made for the sole purpose to inform, not persuade. They also provide statistical evidence to compare to those of the National Football League. In the United States, 1.5 million individuals per year incur a head injury. Of these injuries, 75% are classified as mild. Between 1998 and 2000, the

incidence of mild traumatic brain injury was 503 cases per 100,000 persons, with a doubling of this incidence in Native Americans and children. (Olson 3). Maese, Rick. NFL head trauma lawsuits may provide fuel to those questioning safety of game. The Washington Post, 6 (June 2012). Web. 19 Sept. 2012. In this article, there is a big day coming up where over 2000 former players from the NFL are joining together in a lawsuit that basically says that the sporting committees withheld information that had to do with head trauma during the course of a typical football game. The claims range from fraud to wrongful death and civil conspiracy. It seems like the players if they do not win have already made a large impact just by having this many organized lawsuits of former football players. The public says that the worst thing the NFL can do is to win the court case, because that will make it seem like they do not care about the long term of their players. There is more to this source than just the lawsuit though, they talk about the shame of having to step forward saying you have a mental problem, and how it is different than from having, for example, a broken leg at the office. I think this source has really strong points and intelligent quotes from the parties directly. Mosley, Mike. Head Injuries in the NFL. New York Times. 3 (December 2012). Web. 3 Dec. 2012. The topics of head injuries in the National Football League has in some cases become so serious that they are even the subject of some Congressional hearings in the United States. A concussion is not a bruise of the brain, it occurs when the head is stopped is stopped rapidly from acceleration or is spun rapidly. At least 50 high school or younger football players since 1997 have been killed or have sustained serious head injuries on the field. Is that really what we want our future to be like when it pertains to football? It has been proven that repeated mild hits do indeed cause brain damage, which is not worth any amount of money to the families of the football players. This article says that more needs to be done in order to protect the well being of these players who are now putting more and more of their life on the line for the sport they love. This source is very good at drawing the

line and stating their side of this argument. They use a good argument in involving the generation of smaller football players and how the ordinary family might be able to relate more to this. Patel, Nilkanth. NFL Head Injuries and Their Long Lasting Repercussions. Bleacher Report, 4 (May 2012). Web. 19 Sept. 2012 The death of Junior Seau inspired the writing of this article. They immediately come out accusing the NFL of a deep and cavernous closet (Patel, 2012). The author goes on to say that the time has come where science can finally show the world what the NFL has known all along, and they hope to change the overall look of football where instead of saying a football can play through anything they should start being more safety cautious. This article is not about the science however it seems like this article is written from an almost personal revenge story, which there have to be many, more like this. This article might not be the best for consideration in the academic conversation because of the irrational tone that the author has, or it might be just the point of view that is needed to show the intensity and plausibility of the argument. Remington, Alex. Sports-Related Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries: Research Roundup. Journalists Resource. 11 (October 2012). Web. 20 Nov. 2012. Football is a high-speed, full contact sport between heavy, powerful players. This article talks about how the NFL has responded by banning most high-risk hits on defenseless players. They also talked about the punishment given to the coaches and players involved in the bounty scandal where players were given bonuses if they injured an opponent. This does not deal directly with head injuries but this author is the first that I have seen to connect these two and I feel now that he has connected them a different view appears. This view shows the NFL protecting their players through investigations and strict punishments for anyone that losses their regard for personal safety. This source is one of the view that almost stands up for the NFL which is a key view that needs to be explored.
