Your Name: Ahmad Turner Date of Observation: November 14th, 2012 Time of Arrival: 7 A.M. Time of Departure: 3 P.M.

Location: 24-hour urgent care animal hospital Time 7:00 A.M. Observations 24-hour clinics always have a veterinary doctor on site. Their shifts consist of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift. 2nd. 1st shift requires at least two vets. The two doctors (the one ending his shift and the one starting a new shift) read over the logbook together. The first objective for the vet was to diagnose a small Norfolk Terrier for any diseases and do blood work. A pit-bull was just rushed into emergency care. The owner was very distraught. Reactions: I thought this was interesting how important it is to always have a doctor on site in case of an emergency. At this hospital, they keep an electronic logbook where they record every activity that happens throughout the day. Most logbooks I see are on paper but this one was electronic. I thought this was very interesting because the vet knew every part of the dog like a doctor would a human and knew exactly how to handle the situation. I was very surprised that they would get an emergency so early in the morning. It appears as though the dog fell out of the car window as she was driving. However I had to stand off to the side and just observe while the vets took care of the situation. As I was looking at the dog, nothing appeared to be broken and everything seemed to be ok, just some bad scratches and bruises. It was very intense being in that environment and seeing the vets handle the situation so well. I was impressed. One of the vets suggested to the lady that she should purchase a harness and leash to put on her dog in the car and buckle her in when she puts on her seatbelt to prevent any mishaps like that from occurring again. My initial reaction to this question to make a very irritated face. Not at the owner though because my girlfriends roommate has a cat and I know how mischievous they can be. Then I had to remind myself that not everyone knows that they have to almost constantly monitor their pets. I was relieved that the owner agreed to the

By this time they had calmed the dog down, diagnosed the dog, and let the owner know that her dog would be just fine. I noticed that for one of the appointments the vet had, the cat was very strange for some reason. The owner, with a very concerned look, asked the vet would his cat die if it consumed dish detergent. The vet took the owner and the cat into

a consultation room and explained what would need to happen in order to save the cat. The owner wasnt too enthusiastic about what needed to be done but reluctantly he agreed. I conducted my two interviews with Dr. Beldegreen ad Dr. Gelfman.

consequences of what the cat did. The cat would have to have its stomach pumped and need to take medication once a day in order to restore the pH balance back to normal
