Welcome to Good Shepherd Chapel

Second Sunday of Advent

This week and next, our Gospel readings invite us to consider John the Baptist and his relationship to Jesus. John
the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets, preaching repentance and reform to the people of Israel. To affirm this, Luke quotes at length from the prophet Isaiah. John baptizes for repentance and for forgiveness of sins, preparing the way for God's salvation. The three Synoptic GospelsMark, Matthew, and Lukeattest to the importance of the baptism of John in preparing for Jesus. Only the Gospel of Luke, however, extends the connection between these two men to their birth. The first two chapters of Luke's Gospel contain the Infancy Narrative, which tells about the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. These stories set the stage for the beginning of Jesus' public ministry in chapter 3. The evangelist Luke is the author of the Gospel that bears his name, and he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles as a continuation of the story of Jesus and the Church. In these two works, Luke's sense of time and history emerges. He identifies three epochs of salvation history: the time before Christ, the time of Christ, and the time of the Church and the Holy Spirit. In today's Gospel reading, as elsewhere, John the Baptist is presented as the figure who bridges the time before Christ and prepares the way for Christ's own ministry. In today's Gospel we also note Luke's attention to political and historical detail. Luke shows that salvation is for all people and situated in world events. Therefore, Luke lists the political and religious leaders at the time of John's appearance in the desert. Salvation is understood as God's breaking into this political and social history. John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus, we too are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives the coming of the Lord, as John did. The Lost Coin Parables of Jesus. Written by Pete Miller

A parable is a figure of speech, an extended metaphor, a story using common actions or scenarios designed to illustrate a spi ritual truth, a principle, or a moral lesson. The word parable comes from the Greek word parable, which means to place beside or side by side for the purpose of comparison. A parable can usually be identified by the use of the word like. This was the method of teaching Jesus used most often. The second parable in Luke chapter 15 is of the lost piece of silver or the lost coin. It is remarkably short but its meani ng communicated clearly to the people of Jesus day. Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!' The 10 coins or pieces of silver werent worth very much monetarily, but were of great sentimental value. These pieces of silver were a gift from her husbands family, which she would put in her hair on very special occasions, such as their 25th wedding anniversary. She might wear them while her husband was away to remind her of his love. These pieces were to be worn with five pieces on each side of her head, fastened with little hooks. To lose one piece would be shameful and devastating. It was believed that the loss of this precious coin represented the withdrawal of Gods favor from the family. It was also a cause of great grief for the husband, so much so that he might actually expel his wife from their home because of the disgrace she had brought to him. This is why she lit the lamps, diligently swept and carefully searched. The homes at that time usually had floors of either dirt or stones and a small piece of silver the size of a quarter having fallen would be difficult to find. But she wouldnt give up until she found it. When she did, she would invite her friends and neighbors in to rejoice with her. They would all understand the significance of finding the coin and her relief. In the first parable in Luke 15, the one sheep left the large group and got lost. The shepherd left the 99 to find the lost one and return it to the flock. In the parable of the lost coin, it is close by, nevertheless it is lost. Only by a diligent search will it be recovered. Though it may be covered with dirt, it is still silver, and its intrinsic value has not changed. As the sheep could represent a believer who has wandered away from the flock and gotten lost in the wilderness of the worl d, similarly, the lost coin could be likened to a person within the household who is lost. It could be someone in the church, bravely putting on the Sunday happy face, but struggling inside, in need of a real friend. It could be a son or daughter in a family, quietly going through the motions day after day but perplexed and uncertain about what direction their life is going. Turn on the lights and search diligently for this person, clean them off and help them to be restored and to realize their value. When any lost person is cleansed and reunited with Jesus Christ, there is cause for rejoicing. Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

Movie Review
The Collection
By John Mulderig Catholic News Service NEW YORK (CNS) -- Some people like to collect stamps or coins. Not the masked maniac (Randall Archer) who might loosely be termed the protagonist of "The Collection" (LD Entertainment). His hobby is kidnapping people and practicing dissection on them, both pre- and post-mortem. The chronicle of his sociopathic pastime, need it be said, makes for a hideous exercise in torture porn. Things get off to a rollicking start as this nameless character, who also dabbles in mass murder, unleashes his own version of a mechanical thresher on an underground club packed with teen and twenty-something ravers. It speeds across the nightclub just at the height of the revelers' heads. Watching the mass decapitation that ensues, one can only think, "Way to kill the buzz, dude!" Of course, one victim contrives to escape with her life; otherwise, we wouldn't be subjected to the noisome 90 minutes that follow. She's utterly uninteresting Elena (Emma Fitzpatrick). Luckily for Elena, her father (Christopher McDonald) is wealthy enough to hire a team of mercenaries (led by Lee Tergesen) to find and rescue her. They're aided in their hunt by Arkin (Josh Stewart), the only survivor of our hooded loony's previous activities. Director Marcus Dunstan's follow-up to his equally sadistic 2009 flick "The Collector" -wherein we first encountered flawed good guy Arkin -- sows mild confusion and deep boredom in between harvesting body parts. The film contains pervasive graphic and gory violence, including torture and dismemberment, some sexual humor, much rough and crude language and an obscene gesture. The Catholic News Service classification is O -morally offensive. Retrieved from http://www.catholicnews.com/
