Mrs. Terrys 4th grade class (2009-2010) came up with a list of questions about Bangladesh, which were emailed to Rishi Syeds cousin Amiyo. His answers are included throughout this presentation. Here is the information he sent us about himself:

Where in the world is Bangladesh?


Bangladesh is bordered by India to the west, north, and east, and by Burma (Myanmar) to the southeast. The south of Bangladesh forms the worlds largest river delta and longest coastline, meeting the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean

Present-day Bangladesh is part of a landmass known as the Indian subcontinent. This area was originally settled thousands of years ago, when people first began to establish permanent settlements and grow crops. The earliest inhabitants most likely came from ancient Mesopotamia, the area near present-day Iraq once known as the fertile crescent.

Government was modeled after the British parliamentary government
President (like British Queen) has mostly ceremonial role Prime Minister leads government (like U.S. president) Parliament functions like U.S. congress, with representatives from each district

Under Bangladesh's unique system, when an administration comes to the end of its term it hands over to an unelected interim government which has 90 days to organise elections. Two main political parties- Awami League/Bangladesh National Party (like democrats/republicans) Free elections, no electoral college- popular vote determines winner

Many items that are easy to find in the U.S. are not available in Bangladesh:
Cars, Motorcycles, Bicycles Video games, movies Brand name clothing (Nike, Levis) Most brands of soda & candy common in the U.S.

People often bring items back for friends and family when they travel to other countries Some items can be ordered/imported, but more difficult to do than in U.S. (very little online shopping convenience)

Religion
About 80 percent of Bangladeshis are Muslims, making Bangladesh one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. The Muslim community in Bangladesh tends to be accommodating to other faiths and beliefs and Bangladesh is known for its lack of communal strife. Hinduism is professed by about 13 percent of the population. There are approximately 1 million Buddhists in Bangladesh, representing less than 1 percent of the population. Bangladesh also has a small Christian population

The 21st day of February (Ekushey February) is being officially observed as the Shaheed Dibash (Martyrs' Day) since the emergence of Bangladesh. Nation pays respect and homage to the sacred souls of the martyrs' of Language Movement of 1952. This day is also known as the International Mother Language Day throughout the world. On this day in 1952, students and youths rose in protest against the imposition of Urdu by the then government as the lone state language of Pakistan. pay respect to the martyrs by placing flowers wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.

Holiday: Description: Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Hindu community continues for ten days, the last three days being culmination with the idol immersed in rivers. In Dhaka the big celebrations are held at Dhakeswari Temple, where a fair is also held and at the Ram Krishna Mission. The Day (mid-April) is a public holiday Eid-e-Miladunnabi is the birth and death day of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). He was born and died the same day on 12th Rabiul Awal (Lunar Month). The day is national holiday, national flag is flown atop public and private houses and special food is served in orphanages, hospitals and jails.

The biggest Muslim festival observed throughout the world. This is held on the day following the Ramadan or the month of fasting. In Dhaka big congregations are held at the National Eidgah and many mosques. The second biggest festival of the Muslims celebrated all over the world. It is held marking the Hajj in Mecca on the 10th Zilhaj, the lunar month. Eid congregations are held throughout the country. Animals are sacrificed in reminiscence of Hazrat Ibrahim's (AM) preparedness for the supreme sacrifice of his beloved son to Allah. It is a public holiday
