Welcome to College for Kids!

What happens when you mix summer, a college campus, and kids? Lots of serious fun and active learning!
The College for Kids program at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City stimulates and nurtures the minds of young people ages 417 with 180 learning options. Classes are designed for highly motivated students to explore an area of interest; parents should read descriptions carefully to find the best fit. Most classes are formatted in a week of 4 or 5 half days. One of the 8 weeks, Kids on Campus week July 23-27, offers an optional supervised lunch break (bring your brown bag lunch) and lets you choose morning and afternoon Traverse City, MI classes for full days of fun (pg. 18).

Registration begins April 13 and continues throughout the summer. Early enrollment is encouraged many classes fill quickly.

It s been 150 years since our country was divided into war. For one week, be a part of that experience by becoming an archeologist, researcher, artist, and writer as you learn about the war why it was fought, where, and by whom. Learn about the role children played in the American Civil War and discover the role of animals as mascots. Youll read and hear examples of childrens literature and create artifacts to show what children may have experienced. From what you learn, take on the role of a child at that time and create a poem or short story. On the last day become an archeologist as you experience a simulated dig looking for artifacts and recording your results. Paddle the coast that was rated the most beautiful place in America the Sleeping Bear Dunes Shoreline. Begin with a dry land orientation to kayaking and paddling skills and pack your gear for the trip. Using sit-on-top kayaks, you will practice and refine your skills, learn rescues, communication signals, and take a swimming safety check on North Bar Lake. Then our group ventures out to the big water of Lake Michigan to paddle up the coastline and see the majestic Sleeping Bear Dunes. During this 4-day intensive, you will journey to Spain guided by a bilingual/bicultural mother/ son team. The teacher will speak in Spanish but her 16-year old assistant will be there to translate as needed. Learn what life is like in Spain as you compare customs, habits, and common slang through direct conversation with a young Spaniard and his mom. Head to the kitchen to prepare typical Spanish food. A Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), a research boat, a summer dayadd them up to get a unique experience of exploration on the water and in the classroom. Parent checklist
Confirm that your child meets the age/grade requirement for their class selection. Please inform us at the time of registration if your child has a physical, medical, or learning need, so we can assure they have a good experience. Give your child a written list of his/ her classes, building names, and room numbers. Walk younger children to the classroom and meet them promptly after class. Drop off no earlier than 10 minutes ahead of class time. NMC doesnt have staffing resources to supervise children who are left early or picked up late. Please be prompt. Let children know that appropriate behavior is expected. Parents will be contacted if a child is disruptive. Inform the teacher if someone else will be picking up your child. Discuss pick-up arrangements with your child prior to class.

Financial aid Limited funds are available to assist families meeting low-income requirements. To receive an application, please call Extended Education at (231) 995-1700. 1. Financial aid awards typically cover half the cost of each class for a maximum of three classes per child (as funds allow). Awarded amount does not exceed $60 per class. 2. To apply, please submit: completed financial aid application registration form payment (half of the cost of each class). 3. Upon receipt of all three of the above, students will be enrolled in requested classes. Please call the EES office 5 days after submitting to learn the status of your request. Applicants who are not awarded financial aid can pay the remaining cost or cancel their reserved spaces at least one week prior to the class and receive a full refund. Refunds A 100% refund will be given if a request is made (call 995-1700) at least five business days prior to the class start date or if a class is cancelled. Withdrawals received closer than five days might be eligible for a 50% credit toward another College for Kids class, valid for one year.
