Neuburger English Comp 101-132 6 December 2012 Anti-Semitism Research Paper Discrimination and prejudice have been in our world for as long as humans have themselves. Discrimination has caused problems in societies throughout history. But despite all of the terrible things that have happened because of prejudice and discrimination, it continues to live on in our world today. Anti-Semitism, prejudice against Jews, is a form of discrimination that has caused the most horrific events in history. Many people describe anti-Semitism as more than simply "prejudice" or "discrimination" against Jews. It is often the result of hatred and despise of the Jews, resulting in persecution and destruction (Antisemitism). According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Adolf Hitler himself was born in Austria to a civil servant, he was a slow learner and did poorly in school, and due to this his very strict farther would often beat his son. When he was old enough he

went to Vienna and tried to get into to art school but was rejected, when Jewish painters got in, this was one of the starting blocks for his hatred. Hitler then joined the army in the first World War and was injured during a gas attack, which he earned the Iron Cross. He was then told to carry out spy projects to gain information on political parties who may have been a threat to the

Lamb German government. One of these parties was a German Workers Party, he found himself joining this group, drawn in by the appeal of the secrecy and anti-Semitism. Hitler became the speaker for the party in 1919 and renamed the party the National Socialist German Workers Party Nazi Party (USHMM). In 1933, the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany and made anti-Semitism an official government policy. According to Philippe Burrin, AntiSemitism is a weapon used in the struggle to assert an

identity. The negative outlook on the Jews then gave the greater population a positive self-image and made them think they were above the Jews. An example explained

in Philippe Burrins writing, anti-Semitism stemmed

from imagined behaviors including accusations that Jews participated in ritual murder and the poisoning of wells (Page 14-17). Stop and think for a second, what if someone was torturing and killing other innocent people by the millions using methods of starving, shooting, gassing, burning, and hanging. You might say, that could never happen, well it has. During World War Two, millions of innocent human beings were killed, all because of one man who had an obsession for power and supremacy. This man that I speak of is an anti-Semitist, meaning someone who is prejudiced against Jews or another race. This man along with his many men thought Jews were an alien race. Hitler and his commanded men murdered the European Jews between 1933 and 1945, and is historys most extreme example of anti-Semitism (Antisemitism). According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) Hitler thought that the Jews were not to be treated like normal human beings because they came from different genes. He used trends such as, equal civil rights, constitutional democracy, free trade,

Lamb socialism, finance capitalism, and pacifism. He didnt think they should get equal rights like the

rest of Germany. According to Philippe Burrin, Hitler convinced his followers that the end of the Jewish race would save Germany from the destruction of the nations of the world (Page 44). Told by Philippe Burrin, Anti-Semitism is the vicious weapon of propaganda used to break down the Jews psychologically before the armies of Germany even began to defeat this religious group during World War Two. He also said, anti-Semitism could not be stopped in the era of World War Two, because Hitler outlawed any media that wasnt showing hatred toward the Jews. The only radio broadcasts were his hate filled speeches and news reports that he approved (page 74). In the movie, A Film Unfinished

propaganda was the only thing that was really shown. The only time that it looked pleasant to live in the ghetto was completely staged and it was very obvious. Before Hitler was appointed leader of Germany he previously was is prison for five years. While in prison he wrote his own book Mein Kampf. The title of the book means My Struggle. In the book he outlined his political philosophy and how he would succeed as the leader of Germany. He also explained in great detail how the Aryans would be the master race of Germany and in his opinion the Jews were only making that plan harder to achieve. Genetics meant everything to him, and to him Jewish genes were worthless (Mein Kampf: Nazi Germany). Hitler directly said in Mein Kampf, "On this planet of ours, human culture and civilization are indissolubly bound up with the presence of the Aryan. If he should be exterminated or subjugated, then the dark shroud of a new barbarian era would enfold the earth." (qtd. in Mein Kampf: Nazi Germany). This quote is a

Lamb perfect example of how he thought that the master race was above all. In addition Hitler also said, The ignorance of the broad masses about the inner nature of the Jew, the lack of instinct and narrow-mindedness of our upper classes, make the people an easy victim for this Jewish campaign of lies. (qtd. in Mein Kampf). No wonder Nazi Germany was so easily influenced. Even though the ideas that he portrayed were so wrong and cruel, he said them with such confidence that many believed him. Chancellery became immediate executors of violence. A vast range of highly trained experts

contributed their skills to Nazi violence. Most of Nazi Germany would humiliate the Jews in a public setting and not so much in the concentration camps and prisons. They were also treated poorly in those facilities as well, but public humiliation was a big one (Pages 128-131).
