FRICTION

EX) You are pushing on a block that is resting on the table.

(a) You press on the block but not hard enough to start it moving. What are the forces acting on the block? (Be sure to specify the type of force and the object causing each force.) Wherever you can, compare the magnitudes of forces. Give a brief explanation for how you know each of the results you state. (b) You press a bit harder and the block begins to move. After a moment of starting up, you press so that the block is moving with a constant velocity. For the time while the block is moving with a constant velocity have any of the comparisons you stated in (a) changed? Which ones? Have any of the forces changed? Which ones? (c) Suppose the block has a mass of 0.4 kg and the coefficient of friction between the block and the table is 0.3. What force will you have to use to keep it going at a constant velocity of 0.2 m/s? (You may take g = 10 N/kg.)

1. A 15.0 kg block is pulled by a horizontal force of 30.0 N along a rough horizontal surface at constant velocity. What is the coefficient of friction?

2. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between a 35 kg crate and the floor is .30, what horizontal force is required to move the crate at a steady speed across the floor? What horizontal force is required if k is zero?

3. A 3000 N car is loose inside a shopping mall where k =0.5. If the car is initially traveling at 60 m/sec. a) what is the kinetic friction force, if the brakes are locked? b) what distance will it take to stop if the brakes are locked?

5. Suppose a 4000 kg car is being towed at constant velocity with a force of 2600 N. Calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction.

6. Bob is being pulled on a sled with a force of 500 N at constant velocity. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the sled and the snow is .386, what is the mass of Bob and the sled combined?

7. Joey attempts to push a refrigerator using 200 N of force with no success. The refrigerator doesnt move. What is the friction force? Is this the static friction maximum? 8. Joey pushes with a force of 300 N and gets the refrigerator moving at constant velocity. If the k = .4, what is the Fg of the refrigerator? What would the k be if the mass of the refrigerator were twice as heavy (Im looking for a number)? 9. A rightward force is applied to a 5-kg object to move it across a rough surface with a rightward acceleration of 2 m/s/s. The coefficient of friction between the object and the surface is 0.1. Use the diagram to determine the gravitational force, normal force, applied force, frictional force, and net force. (Neglect air resistance.)

10. Moving a couch across the linoleum floor, I can maintain a constant speed with 40 N of force. When I reach the carpet, the couch requires 75 N of force in order to keep it moving at constant speed. If I know my couch has a mass of 125 kg, what is the coefficient for kinetic friction for the linoleum and for the carpet?
