Angela Rodriguez Period 6 DBQ American Revolution From the period of 1775 to 1800, American society was changing

substantially after getting involved in the American Revolution. By breaking ties with the British, Americans now had to form differences to be able to be distinguished from the British. With the American Revolution, society changed within the status placing more freedom, new government and punishment among people, and farmers faced hardships. As the revolution went on, many men had to go to war, leaving their family behind. The women of that household had to take their place and do all the work (doc. A). This changed the way people thought about women because they were now seen as strong humans. Many women also helped in the Revolution, like the daughters of liberty who boycotted British goods and made homespun cloth to show that America can be less dependent on British textiles. Other women even disguised themselves as men to enroll in war, like Deborah Sampson. Women also began to speak on about their rights (doc. J). They wanted to be active in the public life and say that even though they are women, they have are humans that need to have equality. The status of Indians in terms of friendship with Americans changed as well. In document C, the Chickasaw chief says that he is happy that the, Americans are inclined to take us by the hand (doc. C). This shows that even though the Indians fought allying with the French, they still want to have peace with the Americans. Then all of a sudden there is a change in the friendship between these two groups. In document E, the speech describes an Indian saying that he was, disappointed, finding ourselves not included in that peace (doc. E). This shows how the Indians no longer have peace with the Americans any more. The Article of Confederations weakness caused separation of the tribes and led to breaking the bond of friendship.

There also was also another change in society which was more freedom among the Americans. In Document D it explains that there was religious freedom and people could no longer be persecuted. This document writes that, no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship (doc D). This led to the first amendment in the bill of rights, which caused calmness between people to do things freely. It was one less stress among the Americans making a great change in American history. With the British gone, the Americans wanted a new government to be different from the British and have a separation. In the Federalist papers it talks about how the men are not all good and need a government to control men who take too much power for themselves and not for the people (doc. I). James Madison wanted the separation of powers to create a great government in this new nation by creating the articles of confederation. He did this because without a government there still had to be laws and punishments made. In document H it is the Northwest Ordinance of Ohio which split up the new states without slavery. In this new land new laws were made to punish people who committed a crime. Even with a plethora of people wanting a new government, there were still half of the people who were tories, or loyalist, who wanted British in power. Society at this time was agriculturally based as shown in the picture in Document F. Hamilton and Jefferson both argued about this, with Jefferson wanting an agricultural society and Hamilton an industrial one. This led to a vast amount of tension with farmers and political leaders. In Document G, a letter form Abigail Adams, she describes how farmers were angry about not being able to pay mortgage and having their farms foreclosed. She gives examples of how they went to such an, alarming height as to stop the courts of justice in several counties (doc. G). The y began to get so frustrated that

they would stop courts and plead for paper currency so they could get attention. At the end there was an outbreak called Shays rebellion in 1786, where farmers rebelled because since they had no land they couldnt vote and were also starving without money. This shows how the rich were staying prosperous, but the farmers were beginning to suffer. With the American Revolution some changes occurred with the relationship among people, more freedom, government and law changes with punishment, and farmers having to go through difficult times with economy. These changes were very important because they help distinguish America from other countries especially associating America with Britain. These changes also impact how Americans think today with concerns of religion and Indians.
