What is the Harlem Renaissance?



The harlem renaissance was known as the "New Nigger Movement". It was a movement of African American culture in literature, dance, music, and art during the 1919-1930 It happened because of the Great Migration following World War 1, that cause many Africans to move to the Northern urban cities. It was also a literary movement, thats when african american were actually taken seriously.

Who is Langston Hughes?


Born: February 1,1902- May 20,1964

Lived Joplin, Missouri Divorce parent, Father move to mexico He moved to Illinois and then to Ohio when he started writing poetry He spent one year in Mexico and another year in Columbia University. He worked as an assistant cook and launderer and even as a busboy. In 1964, he died from prostate cancer

In 1926, his first book of poetry was made called The Weary Blues In 1926 his first novel was published Not Without Laughter and won the harmon gold medal for literature . Hughes refused to differentiate between his personal

experience and the common experience of black american he wanted to tell the stories of his people in ways that reflected their actual culture

Music
Some of the most common music played were
Jazz and Blues for example Billie Holiday started her career during that time and a musician and many more like Sara Laughan and Louis Armstrong

Dance

Swing dancing became very popular during the Harlem Renaissance time.

One of the famous clubs were "Savoy Ballroom and the Cotton Club" thats where everyone gather to have fun and enjoy
