Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society

Newsletter No. 10 June 2012

Hi Jazz Guitar Fans,

Once again our last meeting proved to be a very successful club night, during which more members than ever were provided with an opportunity to play to their peers. Consequently, both non-players and players interacted in a meaningful way, which appeared to give great pleasure to all concerned. The music was certainly of a very high standard although Robin Thomas was a pains to support the less accomplished performer; a group in which he modestly included himself, yet judging by his well conceived programme he has much to offer. As a society we shouldnt forget the inexperienced, less able and downright terrified performer and Robins point was both well made and well received. Thanks you Robin, we agree and indeed it has always been part and parcel of what HJGS should stand for. Robins performance, which featured Satin Doll (in G! a la Barney Kessels Poll Winners recording) and Making Whoopee was, as previously mentioned was one of many and occurred precisely half-way through the night. Tom Prior got things going in great form (he seems to fit the opening slot brilliantly with his spirited playing) in a duo with fusion maestro Martin Chung playing a blues in Bb and Gershwins Lady Be Good. Martin has promised to bring his new 7 string down to the next meeting. They were followed by another duo: Dave Van Gelderen and Chris Brown. It is clear that they have played together frequently as they have developed the ability to mind read one anothers moves! Triste, All the Thing You Are and Weaver of Dreams were all beautifully played. Chris with a rather delicate, subdued, approach whilst Dave was more punchy and up front, getting a quintessentially jazz tone from his 70s Guild CE100 (Capri). Indeed it was nice to see and hear the contrast between Daves 70s Guild with Toms 60s model, I am a big fan of Guild jazz boxes. The Jazz Dawgs, nominally fronted by Adrian Ingram, were next up. Well known for their intricate arrangements and harmony parts (twin guitars but more George Barnes/Karl Kress than Wishbone Ash or Lynard Skynard!) It was refreshing to hear polished, rehearsed, arrangements, as opposed to blowing sessions, and Pete Wraiths vocals and anachronistic, yet expert percussive strumming style were a joy! Robin then brought proceedings back to reality with a plug for the less accomplished, followed by some extremely accomplished playing. We all know how difficult it is to play solo jazz guitar. On account of his own ability perhaps he meant less confident rather than less accomplished!

Chris and Dave got up again for a grooving version of Kenny Burrels Midnite Blue. HJGS host Ian Wroe performed Jobims Wave with Martin Chung and the evening was brought to a close by the Jazz Dawgs with a storming version of Ellington/Strayhorn/Tozols Caravan. If you require postings in the For Sale or Gigs sections send your emails to huddjazzguitsoc@gmail.com. If enough are received on a regular basis then separate emails will be sent out.
We are getting short of new raffle items. If you have any unwanted cds, LPs, strings, Johnny Smiths etc, we will happily accept them (perhaps not the Johnny Smith, it wont fit in my raffle box).

Membership Our members get about a bit so we have decided to introduce a new section and here it is: Members News Our fame is spreading. We have a new member from Shropshire; Mike Wilson has joined us as a full member. Although he admits he wont be able join us on a regular basis he has a stepson who lives in Huddersfield so he will try and time his visits. By the way he says his son John Muff is an accomplished pianist and looking for other musos. He can be contacted on 01484 313966. HJGS welcomes Darren Dutson-Bromley to the committee. He is bubbling with enthusiasm and has already forwarded some great ideas. One of which is to re-instate the set piece, for a collective play, during each club night. This will now be one set piece bi-monthly. On its issue a short presentation will be provided by Darren, Adrian or any other experienced jazz guitar teacher with an affinity/understanding/love of the particular piece. Volunteers for this introductory examination/analysis are welcome and should make themselves known to the committee, practicing guitar teachers would, of course, be very suitable. Just a short exposition re chord sequence, tonal centres, geography (AABA etc) other sequences with similarities, recommended recordings etc. YOUR requests/recommendations for tunes are most welcome. Another area of interest and expertise for Darren is the direction of guitar groups so HJGS will be trying to coerce him into establishing two guitar groups; advanced/intermediate and beginners, with the eventual aim of the occasional HJGS guitar orchestra gig!!

And, on the subject of occasional gigs, we are all systems go for a Head of Steam HJGS Showcase at the end of the year, probably early December. So get your thinking caps on. We need soloists, duos, trios what have you. HJGS member Phil Kamp en has offered to provide the double bass duties should anyone need him. A quiet drummer (is that an oxymoron!) on brushes only will be permitted if need must, but thats up to the players involved.

This guitar was set up by the luthier at HobGoblin in Leeds. A new mahogany bridge was made to increase intonation of sound at higher resonances. The guitar has a mike fitted along with a tail piece jack pin. This would enable a higher quality amplification system to be fitted if required.

The guitar is basically unmarked and comes complete with fitted hard case . This is a beautiful instrument and plays withe a lovely action and a very loud mellow tone. I'm selling simply and sadly because I am elderly and arthritus makes playing this guitar difficult. I am now having to play my manouche on my Peerless Renaissance.. These guitars come up for sale rarely and this is a beauty.
Both guitar and case are AS NEW and have never left my house in the 4 years I've owned them Cheers Rod (Scarborough) 07980913390 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------De` Armond `RED` Jazz Guitar pickup .
