GasLiquidAbsorption

Aim: TostudytheReactionofcarbondioxidewiththehydroxidesolutionintheabsorption column. Apparatus: GasLiquidAbsorptionsetup. Glassware&Chemicals: Burette,Pipette,Beakers,NaOH,PhenolphthaleinIndicator,Methylorange Theory: Theabsorptioncolumnispackedwithraschigrings.Theliquidentersthecolumnfromtop andthemixtureofcarbondioxideandairentersfromthebottomofthecolumn.The NaOHispassedinexcessofthetheoreticalrequirementinthecolu mn. Reaction: 2NaOH+CO2 Assay equivalence 1st CO3+H+ OH+H+ HCO3 H2O Na2CO3+H2O

TheH+ionsreactwiththeOHionsinexcessandwiththeCO3ions. Themolesofbicarbonatesformed=Themolesofcarbonateionspresents n(HCO3formed)=n(CO3present) n(H+1)=n(OH)+n(CO3)

equivalence 2nd : H++HCO3 H2CO3

ThebicarbonateHCO3ionreactswiththeH+ions.TheseHCO3ionsfromthereaction betweenthehydroxidesolutionandthecarbondioxide.

Procedure: 1) Prepare10literof2NNaOHsolutioninafeedtank. 2) Checktheconcentrationofthefeedsolutionbytitrationagainst1NHCl. 3) Fillthebubblingpotwith1.5litersofabovepreparedsolution.Add1.5litersof watertoit. 4) Checktheconcentrationofthebubblingpotsolutionbytitrationagainst1NHCl. 5) SettheflowrateofNaOHsolution. 6) Settheflowrateofcarbondioxidegas. 7) Settheflowrateofair. 8) Takesampleat0,10,25,40,50minsfromcolumnoutletandbubblingpotoutlet. 9) Titratethesamplecolleted,usingphenolphthaleinindicatoragainst1NHCl. 10) Titratethesamesample,usingmethylorangeindicatoragainst1NHCl 11) CalculatethebalanceonNaOHandCO2 Observations: Concentrationoffeedsolution=mol/lit Initialconcentrationofbubblingpot=mol/lit FlowrateofNaOH=lit/hr FlowrateofCO2= mol/hr

Calculations: NaOHconcentrationatcolumnoutlet(N2)=N1xV1/V2 VolumeofHCl(V1)=Burettereadingdeviation Balanceonhydroxidesolution (nNaOHInletnNaOHoutlet)xflowrateofNaOH=nNaOHreacted. AsperthereactiononemoleofCO2reactswithtwomoleofNaOH. Therefore, CO2reactedinthecolumn=nNaOH/2 Yieldofreaction: Yield=molesofCO2absorbed/molesofCO2fed BubblingPotcalculations:

FinalbalanceonCO2 MolesofCO2incolumninlet=molesofCO2reacted+molesofCO2incolumnoutlet.
