NCAA FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RECAP

Div. II - National Seminals Winston-Salem State rolls to 41-18 win over West Texas A&M to advance to national title game WINSTON-SALEM, NC Undefeated CIAA and Super Region I champ Winston-Salem State gave up a touchdown in the rst 20 seconds of the game but not much else as they rolled over Super Region IV champ West Texas A&M to advance to the NCAA Div. II championship game next Saturday in Florence, Alabama. West Texas A&M kick returner Jarrian Rhone returned the opening kickoff 74 yards and quarterback Justin Vaughan needed one play, hitting Trevor Hammargren from 16 yards out for a score to give the Buffalos a 7-0 lead barely 20 seconds into the game. But the Buffs would not reach paydirt again until late the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Rams WSSU Sports Photo offense sliced and diced the vaunted Buffaloes SMITH: WSSU QB defense, racking up 606 yards of offense and threw for 233 yards spreading the wealth around between its running and 1 TD and rushed and passing attacks. Additionally, the Rams did not for another in win. turn the ball over. Conversely, the Buffaloes threw two interceptions and had 13 penalties for 119 yards. WSSU QB Kameron Smith, the CIAA player of the year, hit on 15 of 23 passes for 233 yards and two TDs, one in each half. He also ran for a 24-yard touchdown to cap the scoring. WSSU tailback Maurice Lewis led the ground attack, running for 118 yards on 21 carries and scoring on 11- and 8-yard runs, one in each half. Diminutive reserve TB Bryce Sherman added a spark, getting 73 yards on 10 carries and scoring on a 32-yard run, the Rams rst score. Equally signicant was the Rams defense that picked off two passes while holding Vaughan to 21 completions in 35 attempts. Vaughan came in averaging 325 passing yards per game with 44 TDs. He was held to 169 yards and 1 TD. Leading rusher Khiry Robinson had 137 yards on 20 carries but many of those came late in the game with the Rams well ahead. SWAC CHAMPIONSHIP XIV - GAME RECAP Arkansas-Pine Bluff 24, Jackson State 21, OT Big plays lead UAPB rally from behind for overtime win vs. Jackson State; First SWAC title since 1966
BIRMINGHAM, AL- A record-setting 95-yard touchdown pass from Arkansas-Pine Bluff quarterback Benjamin Anderson to Willie Young with two minutes left in regulation forced overtime as the Golden Lions came from two touchdowns behind to beat Jackson State in the SWAC Championship game at Legion Field. It was the rst SWAC title for UAPB (10-2) since 1966. Tyler Strickland's 26-yard eld goal in overtime capped off 17 unanswered points for UAPB who trailed 21-7 in the rst half. JSU (7-5) dominated the rst half and was up 21-7 in the waning seconds of the second quarter before UAPB linebacker Xavier Lofton hit JSU QB Clayton Moore who fumbled. UAPB LB Bill Ross scooped up the fumble and raced 73 yards for a touchdown with four seconds left in the half sending UAPB into the break trailing just 21-14. JSU had scored in the rst quarter on a 40-yard pass from Moore to Rico Richardson and then later on a 37-yard scoring run by Rakeem Sims. UAPB cut the lead in half on a 1-yard plunge on the rst play of the second quarter. But Moore gave the Tigers a 14-point bulge when he went over from one yard out with 2:39 left in the half. Anderson was named the Offensive MVP after completing 13 of 25 passes for 225 yards including the dramatic 95-yarder. He also rushed for 36 yards and a score. Ross had 10 tackles, 7 solos, a tackle for a loss and the game-changing fumble return.

Undefeated CIAA champion Winston-Salem State has already made history in getting to the NCAA Div. II Football Championship Game this Saturday in Florence, Alabama. But head coach Connell Maynor and his 14-0 Rams are looking to make more. With a win Saturday over 11-2 Valdosta State, the Rams will become the rst HBCU and CIAA national champion in Div. II football and also complete the rst 15-0 season in CIAA and black college football history. None of that is lost on Maynor or his players. "Those guys know they've got a chance to make history, and they would be instant Hallof- Famers," Maynor said at Tuesday's press conference at WSSU. "I told them they're going to go to the White House and see the president." Maynor said jokingly. "Hopefully, that will get out and President Barack Obama will honor that and bring those guys to the White House if we accomplish thing or after we accomplish this thing. "They understand how big this game is and what it'll do for the programs and their lives if we win." But the task at hand is formidable. Whereas WSSU and the CIAA are strangers to the Div. II championship stage, Valdosta State and its league, the Gulf South Conference, have practically lived there. Valdosta State, under sixth-year head coach David Dean, has played in three Div. II championship games since 2000, winning titles in 2004 and 2007 and losing in the title game in 2002. Teams from the GSC have appeared in 16 championship games, ve since 2000, and have won nine Div. II titles since the division went to a championship game playoff in 1973. The GSC has the most Div. II titles (9), playoff appearances (70) and playoff wins (98) of any Div. II conference. Maynor discounts any difference in experience. "The 2012 Chicago Bulls don't have any championship rings," said Maynor. "The old Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan got the rings. This Valdosta State don't have any rings. This coaching staff don't have any rings. Those players never played for any championships. So they've got the same amount of experience in the championship game that we have - zip." "Did that answer that question," he asked

ONE MORE TO GO: Victorious Winston-Salem State players and head coach Connell Maynor (r., holding NCAA Football banner) hold up WSSU and NCAA football banners after their 41-18 national seminal win over West Texas A&M earned them a spot in this Saturday's NCAA Div. II Championship Game in Florence, Alabama.

the reporter that asked it. The game will be played in Florence on the campus of North Alabama University, a member of the Gulf South Conference. The Blazers played there on Oct. 13, beating the North Alabama Lions, 24-21. Maynor said he's not worried about any home-eld advantage for the Blazers. "We've only lost one game on the road since we've been here in three years so we don't mind playing on the road," he said. Valdosta State, who nished the season ranked 17th in the nation, is led on offense by senior quarterback Cayden Cochran (6-2, 188) who has thrown for 2,601 yards (200 of 312) with 25 TDs and just eight interceptions. He's also rushed for 336 yards and another nine scores. The Blazers feature two freshman running backs who have both topped the 1,000-yard mark. Cedric O'Neal, at 5-11, 197, has run for 1,094 yards and 13 TDs. Austin Scott (5-6, 172) has 1,038 yards and nine TDs. Gerald Ford (6-3, 220) and Seantavious Jones (6-4, 193) are two big wideouts that the Rams will have to contend with. Ford totalled 68 catches, 1,018 yards and 13 TDs to lead the Blazers while

Jones had 49 receptions for 916 yards and 13 TDs Regginald Lewis (52 rec., 712 yds., 4 TDs) is a dangerous third receiver. Linebacker Chris Pope leads the team with 117 tackles. Tyler Josey has registered 9.5 sacks. "They've got a very good team," Maynor said of VSU. "They're solid on both sides of the ball. They're well-coached. They're disciplined. They don't make a lot of mistakes. There's a reason they're playing in the national championship. "Offensively, they've got some big receivers. They like to throw it up to them. T hey like to stay balanced and run the ball, also. "We've got to eliminate the big play on defense and force them go 12, 10 and 15 plays to score on us. Offensively, we've got to try to stay balanced as we have all year and protect the football." "If we don't turn the football over, and eliminate those big plays, we're got a great chance to win this football game." WSSU is just the second HBCU to play in th Div. II championship and the rst since Central State made it to the 1983 nal game. In fact, no HBCU football team has ever won 13 or 14 games in a season prior to last season. The best had been 12-0 marks from Southern under legendary coach A. W. Mumford in 1948, Prairie View led by legendary coach Billy Nicks in 1953 and two recent 12-0 marks from Tuskegee in 2000 under Rick Comegy and 2007 under current head coach Willie Slater. A year ago, in Maynor's second year, his Rams surpassed those marks, getting to 13-0 and nishing 13-1 after bowing out to Wayne State (21-14) in the national seminals.
