Churchland Academy Elementary School Lesson Plan Title of Lesson Essential Skills and Questions What are the specific skills developed by this lesson? What specific questions will the students be able to answer as a result of this lesson? Congruency

As a result of this lesson, The student will express congruency and non-congruency. The student will demonstrate knowledge on the congruence of segments, angles, and polygons. Plot coordinate pairs forming polygons and angles to determine congruence and non-congruence, as well as, correspondence of segments, angles and polygons.

OBJECTIVE

Process of Lesson Explain how lesson will unfold. Write this section so that another teacher could follow your instructions. Be sure to include a hook or warm-up and student performance tasks.

Monday Set: Daily Warm-Up: Calendar Math GP: TTW review the information that was covered the following week on graphing on a coordinate grid. The information involved includes naming the specific quadrants, telling where certain ordered pairs belong to each quadrant, which axis is where, and how to graph an ordered pair. IP: TSW complete the worksheet that was given over the break if they have not completed their worksheet. If the worksheet is completed the student will write what they have learned about from the SOL that has been taught. Tuesday Set: Daily Warm-Up: Calendar Math GP: TTW ask the students what they know about congruency and non-congruency. TTW pass out prescribed notes for the new lesson. TTW break down to the student that congruent has exactly the same size and exactly the same shape. TTW also explain that non-congruent figures may have the same shape but not the same size. The teacher will model the congruency symbol, and the application of that symbol with segments, angles and polygons. IP: TLW highlight the important aspects regarding the notes passed out to them at the beginning of the class period. TTW hand out graphing paper for the students to form their coordinate plane. After the Student has made their coordinate plane the teacher will place the points from the attached paper involving the ordered pairs, and write the ordered pairs on the Promethean Board. The teacher will write the directions on the expressions for the students to follow. Wednesday Set: Ask every to show what a congruent and non-congruent symbol looks like. Daily Warm-Up: Calendar Math GP: TTW direct students to the computer lab to go on I Can Learn Classroom website to complete lessons on Polygons and Congruency. TTW tell students to take good notes for a quiz that is to be taken at the end of the lessons. IP: TLW take notes while on the website. TLW take quiz on the lesson that was covered, and use notes to help answer questions. Thursday Set: Daily Warm-Up: Calendar Math GP: TTW show a video on congruency: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv5wORq1Zk4 TTW review information covered on the video TTW go over anything that wasnt discussed in the video, but was on the Interactive Notes. TTW pass out rulers and Congruence assignment which should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. IP: TLW complete Congruence assignment. TLW work in the Envision Book pages 284-286. Friday Set: What have you been learning about? Why is that important? Daily Warm Up: Calendar Math GP: TTW review content covered throughout the week. 6.12 IP: Complete a post-assessment.

ACTIVITY

Closure How will you bring the lesson to an end in a meaningful way? Describe the concise wrap-up activity that will leave an impression upon the students and reinforce the main points of your lesson.

Monday Tuesday Closure: Review the answers on ActivExpressions Homework: Create congruent figures. Review Notes. Wednesday Closure: Review information from I Can Learn Classroom. Homework: Create similar figures. Review Notes. Thursday Closure: Homework: Review notes. Friday Closure: Give me an example of how you can apply congruency in real life.

Evaluation How will you know that the lesson was successful? Describe what type of student assessments you will use to evaluate understanding. Include the criteria you will use or attach rubric. Extension Activities What further activities might be done to increase student understanding on this topic?

ASSESSMENT

There is a post-assessment that follows this lesson. The student will be using technology that allows the teacher to see who grasped the concepts, and those who did not.

Refer to the previous SOL to build from prior knowledge. Use a KWL chart to see what each child knows about the topic. Use website on congruent shapes: http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/similar-and-congruent-figures

Possibilities for Differentiation How can this lesson be adapted for different learners or different classes? (Acceleration, Special Education, Remediation Tiers)

Provide examples that can meet each students needs. Have students write what they understand about the topic, and what they do not understand about the topic.

Commitment to Technology The students throughout the classroom will be using ActivExpression throughout the math lesson to differentiate some of the instruction. The students will also be viewing various videos from Youtube and I Can Learn Classroom. These forms of technology supplement the lesson so that students have the opportunity to see problems expressed in multiple ways. The technology adds to the learning. Commitment to Diversity This lesson has been adapted in a way that various learners would be able to grasp the concepts being covered. Auditory learners are being serviced throughout the lesson from hearing the lesson from the teacher, as well as, hearing the lesson from the other forms of technology that have been addressed. Visual learners are being serviced through the use of diagrams shown on the Interactive notes, Promethean Board, and assignments completed in class to gauge retention. Tactile learners are being brought in through the use of the technology, ActivExpressions, and completing the assignments in class. Students with learning disabilities were coached throughout all of the assignments, and the lesson to ensure that they were grasping the concepts.
