News Notes from the Business Administration and Economics Department

Dr. Tom Cooper

It seems as every year we have news about our faculty or our facilities. This year is no different. On the faculty front, we have important news concerning one of our economics faculty members, Dr. Dan Vazzana. Since joining our faculty in 2006, Dr. Vazzana has proven himself to be a versatile team player. He has willingly accepted a wide variety of teaching and committee assignments when the department needed someone to step up, and he has served well in all those roles. His teaching displays that special Georgetown touch, as students continually praise his willingness to meet with them at odd hours and his effectiveness in helping them through difficult material one-on-one in his office. This spring the Board of Trustees granted Dr. Vazzana tenure and promoted him to Associate Professor. Congratulations are definitely in order. Another faculty highlight came this summer, when Dr. Nancy Lumpkin (economics and finance) earned the designation Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). To earn the CFA designation, one must complete a rigorous three-stage testing process that covers the entire gamut of financial knowledge. Georgetown College is fortunate to have a CFA charter-holder teaching finance. The testing requires both theoretical knowledge of finance (like how options can hedge risk) and practical knowledge (like how to write up an investment plan), so this accomplishment demonstrates that Dr. Lumpkin understands what financial analysts do as well as what they know. In other words, she knows a great deal about the world she is preparing our finance students to enter, which helps her to serve them better. Congratulations are in order here, as well.

Financial Executives International

Dr. Zahi Haddad

Matthew Gilvin was the recipient of the student award [FEI Scholar] from the Financial Executives International for the year 2011-12. FEI is a preeminent professional association representing 14,000 senior financial executives from over 8,000 corporations throughout the United States and Canada. Other recipients from recent years were Anita Smith, Carson Keally, Amy Thaxton, and Sarah Williams. Georgetown College students have won the FEI Scholar award every year since 1992. Dr. Haddad served as a president and is currently a board member.

Finally, let me update you on our facilities. For twenty years the old converted house on Jackson Street, formerly the Home Economics Building, has been the Business Administration and Economics Departments campus home, housing most of our offices and classes. Despite high temperatures in the upstairs classroom and obstructed views (due to support posts) in the downstairs classroom, many generations of students have attended classes, taken tests, made presentations, and learned about business in that building. This summer, however, the Colleges leaders determined that we could no longer maintain the building adequately. As a result, over the summer we moved out and the College razed the building. Our new location is in the old athletic office wing, offices 146-153 in Anderson Hall. Stop by sometime, see our new offices, and visit for a while. We love hearing what youve been up to lately. Let me also, in closing, invite you to join our departments group on LinkedIn if you have not yet done so. It is an easy, modern way to network and to keep the world updated on career changes you experience, and it is a group with which you have much in common.

KyCPA Accounting Interview Day

Ms. Debbie Madden

KyCPA Accounting Interview Day was held on Tuesday, September 25, on a rainy Georgetown College campus. Though the weather was not as cooperative as in previous years, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the students from across the state that came to interview for jobs and internships. Olivia Zendja, a Georgetown senior, had this to say about the day. The day was very interesting. I was really stressed about it because it was my first time being interviewed by an accounting firm. But it went well. Whether I am hired or not, I will not regret having gone through the day because it provided me experience that will help me in future interviews. Sponsored by KyCPA and Georgetown College, this annual recruiting event provides accounting students from smaller colleges and universities an opportunity to interview in one central location with recruiters from several different firms. Invited Speaker Series

Ms. Cathy Buckman

The Business Administration and Economics Department and Phi Beta Lambda co-sponsor an ongoing Invited Speaker Series on Careers and Leadership. Our speakers, some of whom are Georgetown College graduates, are business leaders from a wide variety of industries. These businessmen and women describe their companies and industries, their career paths, and career opportunities within their companies. Cathy Buckman plans and coordinates the speaker series. The following is the schedule of speakers for the current school year:

among colleges and universities to write and deliver a sell-side report for a local mid-size public corporation. This years company is Humana. The students will attend a corporate presentation of the financial information and take a tour of the company on December 11, 2012. The CFA Challenge Team includes: Daniel Harmon, John Hunter, Tanner Mahoney, and Greg Peebles. They have already begun to prepare, but the event wont occur until mid-February 2013. The winner moves up to compete at the national level in Ontario, Canada. Wish us luck!

The 2012-2013 Georgetown College Investment Team

Advisor: Dr. Nancy Lumpkin

The Investment Team begins its 15th year this year. It is so amazing to reflect on the fact that the students $50,000 portfolio is now bouncing around $210,000. If you were on the team in 2009, you will remember we purchased Apple stock. Know that we just sold it yesterday, earning a 196.6% return for our troubles. I am sure you have noticed that the outcome of the national political election has not been received especially well on the stock market. That said, the team this year has made a solid start with selections from technology, oil, retail, and consumer non-cyclical. The current focus is on research into the insurance industry. Interestingly, the team did not include a junior last year, so no team leader has been identified. That provides me with a bigger chance to teach the ropes a little more directly rather than stand as the guide on the side. The seniors on the team this year: Tat-Lun Tsung, Greg Peebles, Wence Peraza, Rachel Penn, and Nathan Sowell. If you get the opportunity to meet any of these fine students, dont hesitate to ask them about their experience on the Investment Team! The college will compete in the CFA Investment Challenge, hosted by the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute. The CFA Institute is a global association of investment professionals whose mission is to lead the investment profession globally by setting the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence (see www.cfainstitute.org). Each local society, here, the Society of Louisville, hosts a regional competition
