Firstly, our Parish School students will be spending

importantqualicaon.

Therearetwoessenalkindsofprayer:Somethingwe
call liturgical prayer, the public prayer of the Church,
and something we call private or devoonal prayer.
Unfortunatelyweoenconfusethetwo.

For example, ve hundred people might be sing in

meditaon together in a church or praying the rosary
together at a shrine and this is sll private or
devoonal prayer. Conversely, someone might be
praying the Oce of the Church alone at home in an
armchairorapriestmightbecelebrangtheEucharist
alone at a kitchen table and this is public, liturgical
prayer. The disncon, as we see from these
examples, is not dependent upon the number of
people parcipang, or whether the prayer is taking

Perhapsachangeofnamesmighthelpusunderstand
the disncon: Liturgical, public prayer might more
aptly be called priestly prayer, while private and
devoonal prayer might beer be termed aecve
prayer.

What is priestly prayer? It is the prayer of Christ

throughthechurchfortheworld.OurChrisanbelief
is that Christ is sll gathering us together around his
wordandisslloeringaneternalactofloveforthe
world. As an extension of that we believe that
whenever we meet together, in a church or
elsewhere, to gather around the scriptures or to
celebrate the Eucharist we are entering into that
prayer and sacrice of Christ. This is liturgical prayer;
it's Christ's prayer, not ours. We pray liturgically
whenever we gather to celebrate the scriptures, the
sacraments, or when we pray, in community or
privately, something that is called the Prayer of the
Church or the Oce of the Church (Lauds and
Vespers).

And this kind of prayer is not restricted to the

ordained clergy. We are all priests by virtue of our
bapsm and part of the implicit covenant we make
with the community at our bapsm is the
commitment, when we reach adulthood, to pray
habitually for the world through the liturgical prayer
oftheChurch.

What needs also to be highlighted here, since we

easily miss this aspect, is that the Church's liturgical
Dountr Bro Nrroro
Sr Kathryn is again on the lookout for a double bed.
