the old Introit Rejoice ye with Jerusalem (drawing
on Isaiah 66:10). It was a day when certain of the
(formerly heavy) penitenal observances associated
with Lent were relaxed, e.g. the wearing of rose
colouredvestmentsinsteadofviolet(yes,myaimisto
ownasetoneday!).

Whilethatunderstandingoftodaymightnolongerbe
part of the Churchs life, it is important to remember
that while Lent is indeed a penitenal season, it is a
penitenal season with a purposeour preparaon
for the celebraon of Easter with minds and hearts
refreshed. Penitence for sake of penitence can easily
slipintothesinofpride.

The beginning of Holy Week is now only two weeks

away, and our preparaons are in full swing. If you

Holy Week and the Easter Triduum, please make

our celebraons, and any and all contribuons would

a wide range of opinions and understandingsand
that is only right and proper. The danger can come
however when any one opinion is labelled as being
wrong or out of touch when compared to another.
The use of labels such as liberal or conservave is
destrucve to the very nature of community, and I
would urge members of the parish community to be
recent in doing so...for the sake of our identy as a
communityoffaith.

Recently I printed in the bullen a short piece about
the act of Communion. I have been asked to repeat,
and possibly extend, the column, and am pleased to do
so:

The act of receiving communion is the greatest act of

faiththatwe,asChrisans,everundertake.Whenwe
say Amen in response to the statement The Body
of Christ or The Blood of Christ we are professing
our faith in the presence of Christ not only in the
sacredspeciesbutintheotherwaysinwhichChristis
presentduringthecelebraonofliturgy.

It is important therefore to do two things: rstly to

waitunltheMinisterofCommunionsaysTheBody
ofChristorTheBloodofChristbeforewerespond,
and secondly to audibly respond with the word
Amen which comes from the Hebrew and has the
meaning of verily or so be it. The use of the word
Amen is therefore a very profound proclamaon of
faith,andnottobeusedlightly.

Similarly,asweapproachthereceivingofcommunion
in procession, the Australian bishops have asked that
we all make a profound bow in reverence of the
Sacrament they are to receive (GIRM, 160). The use
of a bodily gesture further unites the community in
what they are doing, and so other gestures (such as
genuecon) should be avoidedparcularly if they
disruptthenatureofprocessionasgenuecontends
todo.

Theotherthingtobesaidaboutreceivingcommunion
isexactlythatwereceive,andnottake,communion.
This is why the consecrated host is placed into our
handoronourtongue,andwhythechaliceisoered
tous.Communionisagithatwereceive,andtotake
iteither by snatching the consecrated host from
the hands of the Minister of Communion or by self
inncngthehostintothechalicedestroysthevery
symbolism of what we do at this point of the liturgy.
We receive communion, and so become more and
more that which we have receivedthe Body of
Christpresentintheworld.

As indicaon, selfinncon (whereby the host is

dipped into the Precious Blood) is not permied
underthecurrentdisciplineofthe Church.Ifwetruly
understandthetruesignicanceofwhatwedowhen
receive communion then we would never want to
destroythesymbolismbyselfinncng.

And lastly, for those who choose to receive

communion on the tongue, can I make a plea for you
