A New Era in Transformer Design Standards that Optimizes Overload Capacity and Reliability in a Smaller Footprint

Cooper Power Systems introduces PEAK transformer technology for reliable electric power voltage transformation with overload capacity to at least 112% in smaller, lighter units than comparable fluid-filled transformers.

Stretch Your System Investment With PEAK Transformers

PEAK transformers from Cooper Power Systems are uniquely designed to provide you with additional capability to manage increased loads and temporary overload capacity without loss of life expectancy when compared to mineral oil-filled transformer alternatives. Utilizing an advanced high-temperature insulation systemcomprised of thermally upgraded kraft paper, Envirotemp FR3 dielectric fluid, and an optimized core and coil designa 75 C Average Winding Rise (AWR) PEAK transformer will result in a smaller footprint and a lighter unit capable of the same ratings as a physically larger 65 C AWR rated unit. PEAK transformers are filled with the biodegradable alternative to transformer oil, Envirotemp FR3 dielectric fluid, a critical enabling technology which extends transformer life and raises fire ignition resistance. Combined, all of this results in a lower lifetime cost of ownership verses comparable fluid-filled transformers.

Increased Overload Capacity

Utilities are now able to operate PEAK transformers beyond full rated load to at least 112% to more precisely size transformers based on the period of peak demandwithout reducing insulation life. Smaller kVA transformers perform at the level of larger traditional units Fewer transformers need to be installed on a network of the same size since each PEAK transformer can handle more load more houses can be supplied per unit Aging equipment can be replaced to add increased reliability to an existing system for long-term distribution planning

A Long History of Innovation

New technology has always driven changes in transformer design standards. With each revolution, the new transformer technology exceeded the limits of previous design standardsincreasing operating temperature, life expectancy, and capacity. In 1956, Cooper Power Systems was the first to design and sell the 65 AWR transformer. It wasnt until 1964 that 65 AWR became the NEMA standard. Today, the PEAK transformer design is driving the need for the new standard, expected in fall of 2012.
The new PEAK transformer is available in both pole- and pad-mount designs.

PEAK Transformers

Increased Overload Capacity

PEAK transformers are designed to accommodate heavier base loading, as well as peak loading greater than 100%, for extended periods of time without degrading the insulation system or the life of the transformer.

The tables above show the capability to load a PEAK transformer above the limit of traditional transformers. A standard transformer with a 100 kVA rating can be operated at 112 kVA in a PEAK Transformer design and deliver an additional 100 A of load for a 120 V secondary. 2

Product or Service Description Here

Increased Reliability
Moisture and thermal stress are the enemy of transformer reliability and life. Longer life contributes to system reliability performance. The capacity to load PEAK transformers continuously at higher temperature and varying loads without causing damage to the transformer contributes to better overall system reliability. Insulation system life is extended by a minimum of three to four times the standard ANSI life of 20.55 years, even at these higher operating temperatures Filled with a bio-based dielectric fluid that is UL and FM Global recognized as a less flammable fluid, providing significant enhanced fire safety

Smaller, Lighter Transformers

When compared to traditional transformer operation at the same kVA rating, the PEAK Transformer will be smaller and lighter. These units will use less material and fewer gallons of dielectric fluid resulting in a better value, as well as lowering related costs of handling and operating the larger transformers. Easier to handle and install Reduces shipping costs Reduces warehouse space needed Banks of pole-mounted units require less space on utility poles No need to upgrade utility poles and superstructure when adding kVA

Soybean oil-based fluid creates a barrier against water at the surface of the insulation making the thermal kraft paper in the coil windings stronger and longer lasting Meets NEC standards for reduced clearance distance without fire suppression More than 15 years of field experience with no reported Envirotemp FR3 fluid-filled transformer failures due to internal arcing coil flashovers

Transformer Standard
The proposed IEEE Std C57.154-2012 standard, covering the design, testing, and applications of transformers operating at elevated temperatures such as the PEAK transformer, is in its final approval process, with expected release in fall of 2012.
