Project Report on UAV CAD Model Design for SAE Collegiate competition by ZOYA. A. RIZVI MENTOR : PROF. D. S. S. SUDHAKAR

29th October 2012

Abstract The purpose of this report involves the design and construction of a remote-controlled aircraft which fulfills the 2012-2013 regulations and mission requirements for submission to the SAE Aero Design East competition to be held in Texas. In order to be considered successful, the aircraft must lift the maximum possible payload within the given geometrical restraints and engine restriction by the SAE Aero Design East committee. The design process of the aircraft begins with important and extensive research analysis on similar airplane types which performed related missions. Historical data is then adapted to this scaleddown application, and after sizing down these values, preliminary estimates and calculations are performed and later refined to achieve a competitive aerodynamic structure. Furthermore, with the use of available software programs, important airfoil data is used to design an optimal wing design, which, for the sake of this project, needs to maximize the lift-to-drag ratio, better known as L/D. After this preliminary design is obtained, theoretical values need to be tested through the use of computational fluid dynamics software programs. Also with the use of XFLR5 software, the same aerodynamic studies are performed on the main wing of the airplane and C p to A.R graph is obtained comparing many airfoils in order to select the best airfoil optimally. After comparing these results with theoretical values, a structure capable of shaping this aerodynamically optimized airplane is then designed. All the components of the aircraft have to be thoroughly modeled and designed with the use of computer aided design (CAD) software, such as ANSYS for CFD and SolidWork for CAD model, in order to perform the necessary structural analysis testing and finite element analysis (FEA) simulations.

Acknowledgement It gives me pleasure to present this report on UAV CAD Model Design for SAE Collegiate competition. I am truly grateful that I got this opportunity of presenting the Ist - Phase Report of my Project of IInd Year M.E CAD/CAM/ROBOTICS for the partial fulfillment of criteria for degree in IIIrd sem. This project gave me an insight on aerodynamics involved in the formation of an aircraft. Also I got an opportunity to learn different softwares of CAD/CAM which will prove to be very beneficial in my future endeavour. I would like to thank Prof. D.S.S Sudhakar for being my mentor, for giving his valuable guidance and constantly encouraging me for understanding and writing down this report.
