Investigation: Force on a Conductor in a Magnetic Field

The hypothesis that will be tested is that the force on a current strip running perpendicular to the magnetic field inside a solenoid is given by the NI2d equation F= 0 if the coil and the conducting strip both have the same L current. Step 1: When setting up the apparatus, use only one power supply. Connect one terminal of the conducting strip to the power supply and the other terminal to a terminal on the solenoid so that they are both connected in series. Connect the other terminal of the coil back to the power supply. This means that the currents in the strip and the coil will be the same. When connecting the coil, connect the power supply to the terminals that read 440 turns on the coil Add a vertically mounted metre stick (resting at floor level) beside the current balance setup to indicate the equilibrium, horizontal position of the balance. Do step 2. Do step 3, arranging the connections on the coil to give the required downward push on the strip inside the coil. At the end set the current to 5A. Do step 4 to find the mass of wire required to balance the magnetic force. To find the mass of the wire, record its length and multiply it by the linear density of the wire (__________) Do step 5, decreasing the current by 0.5 A each time until the current is down to 3.0 A. Omit step 6. For step 7, only do measurements iii) and iv) and also do the following: o measure the width of current balance strip (label it "d")

Record your data in an appropriate chart and also all relevant measurements needed for the formula For the analysis, do the following: (do not do the analysis from the text) Calculate the magnetic force in each case by calculating the mass of the wire in each case. The magnetic force acting down on the conducting strip is the same as the weight of the wire since the wire and the conducting strip are both the same distance from the pivot point. NI2d Use the equation F = 0 to calculate a predicted value for the force for L each of the sets of data gathered in the experiment. Compare these with the measured values using a percent difference. 1

% diff. = | difference between values | / |predicted value| 100 % Compare theory and experiment by graphing Force vs. Current showing the data and the values from the equation on one graph (with curves of best fit). To hand in: hypothesis, measurements, data chart, analysis calculations and comparisons, one graph of Force vs. Current showing the data and the predicted curve (from the equation), comment on the results.
