BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND RECEIVES $25,000 CONTRIBUTION FROM AT&T NORTH BEACH, MD (November 12, 2012) Maryland Senate President Mike Miller today joined officials from AT&T, the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maryland, and other local partners to announce a $25,000 contribution from AT&T to support the Graduate to Go robotics program that will allow underserved high school students to strengthen science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills by designing, building and programming robots. The program is aligned with AT&T Aspire, AT&Ts nationwide initiative focused on helping more students graduate from high school ready for college and careers. The Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maryland is a beacon for children in the community, said J. Michael Schweder, president, AT&T Mid Atlantic. This contribution will help children in Southern Maryland learn the STEM skills that are increasingly important in the digital age. Senator Miller said this contribution will give students skills that are vital to their future success. Our schools make Maryland an attractive place to live and do business, but we know that some children need extra support to help them succeed, said Senator Miller. AT&Ts support of our Boys and Girls Club will give middle- and high-school students the science, technology, engineering and math skills that are vital to their future success. Reginald Broddie, chief professional officer of the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maryland, said: AT&Ts contribution will open avenues that have the potential to change the lives of the youth of Southern Maryland. One of the great contributions we make to the children we serve is our ability to provide services through partnerships with community-minded companies like AT&T. Thanks to AT&Ts generous contribution, BGCSM will be able to provide an educational experience that will give students the chance to learn in innovative ways. With the support from AT&T, the Club will offer new programming in robotics, which teaches math, science and computer technology skills. Teams of up to ten students at the 8th-10th grade level, with the help of at least one adult coach, will participate in a challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points

on a themed playing field and developing a solution to a problem they have identified, all guided by a set of identified learning objectives. The teams will strategize, design, build, program, and test a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS(r) technology. In this activity, students will apply real-world math and science concepts, helping them develop employment and life skills such as critical thinking, time management, collaboration, and communication. This comprehensive approach to learning is just another way to keep youth engaged and excited about learning.
